Quality ZZZs: Good Sleep Vital to Mental Health
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the importance of mental well-being. Our district understands that promoting mental health goes beyond a single month—it's a daily commitment -- so we're highlighting resources and initiatives aimed at fostering positive mental health.
This week, we focus on the importance of sleep to better regulate emotions, reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance an overall sense of well-being. To help get a good night's sleep, stick to a routine, limit screen time and caffeine right before bed, and use relaxation techniques. More tips can be found on 4J website.
4J Teacher Receives National Recognition
Congratulations to Patricia Polter, language arts teacher at Monroe Middle School, who has been recognized for her outstanding work helping students read at their grade level.
Patricia was one of about two dozen educators nationally to be named an 180 Award winner. The Read 180 program provides crucial reading intervention for students at the middle and high school levels, offering vital support where it's most needed.
Patricia was recognized for "creating a vibrant and engaging learning environment. Her ability to connect motivational strategies with educational outcomes has significantly enhanced student engagement, driving remarkable progress in their reading journeys."
Two other 4J educators, Casey Allbritten and Misty Bisby, language arts teachers at Sheldon High School and Madison Middle School, respectively, were nominated for an 180 Award. Thank you to each of you for your unwavering commitment to education and the power of literacy!
"It's Grrreat!": Grant Supports 4J Middle School Track
Thanks to the WK Kellogg Co., which presented a $17,941 check at a sub-district middle school track meet on May 7, all eight middle school teams are now able to compete in official uniforms. The kids (and adults) had a blast with the mascots during the event: Tony the Tiger from Kellogg's; Dougie the Douglas Fir from Safeway; and Leo the Lion from Madison Middle School. And let's not forget the mascot race, where our very own Leo took home the victory!
Standard Response Protocol Refresher: EVACUATE
Our district employs the Standard Response Protocol as an important part of our emergency response procedures. The protocol comprises five key actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Below are some important reminders regarding the Evacuate action. (The other four key actions, Hold, Secure, Lockdown and Shelter were featured in prior staff e-newsletters)
Evacuate! (A location may be specified)
What to do?
- Instruct students to leave their belongings.
- Obtain the evacuation materials, such as a class list.
- Lead students to the designated evacuation location.
- Account for all students and adults. Notify if there are any missing, extra or injured individuals.
When to initiate a Shelter?
Evacuations are warranted in response to various emergency scenarios to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on campus. These situations include, but are not limited to: smoke/fire, security threats (such as bomb threats), hazardous spills, utility failure, etc. Evacuation to a specific location for reunification purposes may be part of the evacuation plan. It's essential to verify the designated evacuation locations with your school.
Share Your Thoughts with PERS
Each year, the Public Employees Retirement System surveys its members to gain feedback that helps provide quality service and retirement education to more than 405,000 public employees across Oregon.
The PERS' Member Satisfaction Survey is short and will take just a few minutes to complete. The survey will be open through Friday, May 31. PERS thanks you for your feedback and suggestions.
Labor Negotiations to Continue with EEA
Negotiators with the district and Eugene Education Association are holding the next bargaining session on Wednesday, May 29, at the Ed Center, 200 N. Monroe St. Sessions will be live-streamed on Zoom at the following link.
Recordings of prior sessions and the schedule of upcoming meetings are posted on this 4J webpage. The current contract is set to expire on June 30, 2024.
Final Walking Challenge of School Year Starts Soon
Grab your co-workers and have your team join the "Walking on Sunshine" challenge in the Walker Tracker app. Once you're in the app, find your school or department and join. Make sure that everyone on the team is logging their steps and activities throughout the challenge. And don't forget the tunes — might we suggest a certain Top 10 hit from 1985.
NEW! For this challenge only, six teams can win the $300 cash prize by finishing in first- or second-place for:
- Tallying the most steps either by walking or engaging in physical activities (which can be converted to steps in the app)
- Obtaining the highest average of steps/activities
- Posting the most pictures related to the challenge's theme to the Walker Tracker app dashboard.
In addition, the top eight individuals with the most steps/activities will take home a Oregon State Parks pass.
