A Message From Ms. Cannon
Happy Thursday!
We had our MadCap Puppets assembly today. Our students had a blast engaging and participating and it was really enjoyable to watch their smiling faces during and after the assembly.
It was also really great to see families at conferences this week and we sincerely appreciate your support and partnership! We would also like to send a special thanks to our PTG for providing conference meals for our staff AND for making MadCap Puppets possible!
We have had an increase of glass bottles at Bogan. To prevent accidents, we encourage using plastic, metal, or other shatterproof materials for lunch boxes, water bottles, and any other containers brought to school. Glass can easily break, creating sharp shards that could cause injuries to students and staff. Keeping everyone safe is a top priority!
Have a great long weekend!
Sincerely,
Kirsten Cannon, Principal

Halloween
We will celebrate Halloween at Bogan on Thursday, October 31st. Costumes will be permitted with the following guidelines:
1. No Costume Masks
2. No Props
3. Minimal Makeup
4. Costumes must be worn to school. There will not be a “change time”. Please make sure that your child will be able to function comfortably throughout the day (bathroom needs, recess, school work, specials) while wearing his/her costume.
Weather permitting, we will have a costume parade outside of the building at 8:30am. If your child is a car rider, you are welcome to pull around and park in our lot to wait for the parade to begin. If it is raining, parents will be permitted to line up in the gym and students will parade through.
In addition, many of our classrooms are having Halloween parties. Many teachers are doing many different things, so please look for communication from your child's teacher for their specific plan.
If you would not like your child to participate in the Halloween festivities, please let your child's teacher know.
3rd Grade Testing
Our 3rd grade students will take the fall English Language Arts Ohio State Test this month. Students will test on Tuesday, October 22nd and Wednesday, October 23rd. Makeups will be completed on Thursday, October 24th and Friday, October 25th. All testing will begin in the morning after specials.
If you are a 3rd grade parent, we would LOVE for you to write a letter or card of encouragement to your child that they will read before starting the test. If possible, please put the letters in an envelope because we would like for them to be a sweet surprise for our students!
We have planned a (short) 3rd grade Pep Rally on Monday, October 21st for our students. The purpose of this pep rally is to build confidence and encouragement.
Teachers are also taking time to explain to students what trying their best looks like when taking a test. For example, we encourage students to take their time and check their work. We would appreciate if you would also talk to your student about the importance of doing their best on the test. Students who do their best on the test will be invited to a 3rd grade Movie Party on Friday, October 25th!

Lunch Accounts
As a reminder, you are able to add funds to your student's lunch account through the Talawanda EZ Pay system. If your student's account reaches -$50 it will be rolled into your school fees. Please be mindful and keep your student's account current. You can use Talawanda EZ Pay, send a check or cash to the school office to take care of your student's balance.

Bus Expectations
Safety at school is our #1 priority, which includes ensuring safety on the school buses. In the last week, we have had an increase in the number of bus write-ups reported to Ms. Cannon. The following Bus Code of Conduct is outlined in Talawanda's Code of Conduct:
First Referral: Student/Principal Conference. Will result in a verbal warning and a conference between the student and building administrator. Documentation of the referral and meeting will be mailed home.
Second Referral: Will result in a conference between the student and a building administrator, a phone call to parent, and documentation of student misconduct report mailed home.
Third Referral: Will result in a conference with the student, phone conference with parent, and 3-day suspension. The administrator will document and mail home the conference summary.
Fourth Referral: Will result in a conference between the student, parent, driver, and administrator with a 5-day bus suspension.
Fifth Referral: Will result in a conference between the student, parent, driver, and administrator with a removal from the bus until the end of the semester or for a minimum of 10 days.
Please talk with your children about the following safety expectations on the bus:
Stay seated: Remain in your seat, facing forward, with your feet on the floor and hands inside the bus.
Keep the aisle clear: Backpacks and other belongings should be stored under the seat or on your lap to keep the aisle free of obstacles.
Listen to the driver: Follow the driver’s instructions and pay attention to all announcements.
Don’t distract the driver: Avoid loud talking, shouting, or playing while the bus is moving to allow the driver to focus.
Wait for the driver’s signal before crossing: When getting off, if you need to cross the street, wait for the driver’s signal and always cross in front of the bus, not behind it.
Be alert and cautious: Look both ways when crossing and be mindful of cars that may not stop.
Counselor's Corner
Hello parents and guardians! It has been a busy beginning of the year here in the Counselor’s Office! We have class lessons up and running and it has been such a joy to get to know your students! Each class is receiving a social-emotional learning program called Second Step. In these lessons, your students are learning what it means to be a good listener, how to follow directions, how to identify and handle big emotions and feelings, and what it means to be a good friend. Most lessons build on the one from the previous week. This is what we have been learning in each grade level so far:
Kindergarten and 1st grade: We have learned how we use our whole bodies to pay attention! Our brains help us to think and make good choices, our eyes help us to see the grown-ups teaching us, our hands stay to our sides or in our laps, our legs are crossed or in front of us, and our mouths are used to say kind words to others. We have also learned that it’s okay to make mistakes and we keep practicing to learn new things.
2nd grade: We are learning to identify what we are good at! We’ve talked about how it is okay to make mistakes because we are still learning and that practice helps us to become better at the things we are learning. We have also talked about how it’s okay to ask for help when we make mistakes.
3rd grade: We are learning how our brains make networks that talk to each other to help us learn something new! Each skill we learn is guided by a different section of our brain that works together to help us learn.
4th and 5th grade: We are learning how to set goals towards things we want to be good at! We have determined that good goals are ones that are specific, challenging, and doable. We have worked to set individual and class goals to work towards this school year.
Counselor note:
Please do not hesitate to reach out in any way if you think your child needs additional support or check-ins to help them be successful, both in the classroom and at home. I am here to help in any way that I can!
