Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,
We all experienced sunshine yesterday and slow steps in the direction of outdoors and warmth this past week, and as we continue marching toward a highly anticipated spring season, I hope this email finds our families and supporters well. Citizens in our community are encouraged to attend the upcoming Coffee Chat with our administrative team next Thursday, April 3rd, at 9 a.m. at The Kitchen on Walker Road. These forums have been scheduled for our community to attend, learn more, ask questions, and keep informed of the positive and important news from the Avon Lake City Schools. We look forward to seeing you there!
Preparing Avon Lake City School Students with Life Ready, Career Skills
The foundation of the district’s recently redesigned strategic plan, and our mission statement is to prepare Avon Lake students for an evolving world. One of our four attributes of a graduate is to strive to create students who thoughtfully advance through their educational journeys and leave the ALCS with Life Ready skills, such as exploration and career curiosity. While all of our buildings have begun implementing activities, initiatives, and events to reinforce the importance of Life Ready Skills, Learwood Middle School and Troy Intermediate have put the plan to work with our students recently, and we wanted to share those with you.
Learwood’s Shark Tank Activity
Learwood Middle School 7th graders have been engaged in a replication of the popular reality TV Show, with their very own career exploration-based Shark Tank Activity. This exciting entrepreneurship activity builds upon the marketing skills acquired from time spent at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School (JVS) career exploration and as part of their Skills Class. The most recent installment of the Shark Tank Activity took place earlier this week, where students formed groups and designed, created, and branded a product they felt would improve their quality of life. Learwood’s Makerspace devices helped with embroidery, 3D printing, glow forge, and sublimation. The community gets involved as a variety of adult “Sharks” watch the presentation, and ask questions about the products before deciding into which they would invest their dollars. This hands-on learning experience helps empower students with presentation, communication, and other valuable life skills while putting into practice recently acquired marketing techniques. ALHS Principal Mike May was an active Shark this week, evaluating products! Special thanks to the teachers who inspire this life-ready learning, the special guest “Sharks” from the community, and our students!
Troy Intermediate School’s Career Quest!
Troy Intermediate School recently hosted its own special life ready, career-focused programming earlier this month, as students and guest presenters participated in the second annual Career Quest, an event that helps students explore occupational opportunities in a variety of industries and professions. A total of twenty-eight presenters, many of our own Avon Lake community members, shared their talent and insight with the students during the school day on March 6th. Eight different industries and career pathways were represented, including` Entrepreneurship & Business, Healthcare & Medical Field, Marketing & Advertising, Real Estate & Finance, Fashion & Interior Design, Law Enforcement, Psychology & Self-Care, Technology & AI, and Engineering & Truck Design. Our very own video production team edited and produced this video. Please watch here!
Great job to the individuals at Learwood and Troy, and the community members who make this possible, for our students at this critical age of development to think about their futures. We’re going to continue to put our new plan into action with your help, in our combined efforts to fulfill our mission of making our students ready for an evolving world. Great job all!
Have an enjoyable weekend!
