Arik tries his best to be ready to learn and he is not afraid to make mistakes while learning. He is very nice and fair to his classmates. I am very proud that he is in my class.

Principal's Message/Mensaje de la Directora

Hello Desert Sonora Community!


We begin September 2024 with very hot weather! Cooler weather is predicted toward the end of this month; here at DSS, we cannot wait for more pleasant weather! I want to thank all DSS families for the immense support provided to Desert Sonora School. We had over 55 families join us for our Title 1 & August PTO & we certainly hope to have have you back this month. Our September PTO will hold our second annual Salsa Contest. Please see flyer below for more information.


Our teachers continue to focus on grade level academic standards as well as teaching our students about "Empathy." Equally important, our student continue to focus on Capturing Kids Hearts components & the reasons why we are respectful, responsible, & safe.


I ask all our DSS families to please continue to drop off students no earlier than 7:30 am. Our staff begins to welcome students right at this time. Dropping off students earlier than 7:30 am poses a safety concern for students, due to our staff beginning their workday right at 7:30 am. Please support us in keeping our students safe at all times.


As always, my door is open to hear your ideas as well as for me to address any concerns or opinions that may improve our school! Thank you for your support!

Hawks Stay Hydrated

Dear DSS families,

During our hotter months (August/September/October), it is of vital importance that we all stay hydrated. Please feel free to send your child to school with a water bottle. We allow our students to drink water when they need to and also have water fountains that allow for students to refill their water bottles brought from home. We recommend that you label your child's water bottle with their name, grade, & teacher's name. Thank you for your support!

SAFETY FIRST! / LA SEGURIDAD ES PRIMERO!

It is extremely important for all students to follow safety measures in and out of school. Please notice that all students who ride a bicycle or another transportation medium such as a skateboard or scooter, etc., must follow safety protocols established by the City of Somerton and our school district.


If your child rides any of these to school, please make sure they understand all safety measures, including following traffic signage, particularly those on the DSS campus. Please note students must walk in their modes of transportation once they enter our school. The use of a safety helmet is highly encouraged. We ask for your support in this endeavor. Thank you for teaching your child about safety!

September PTO Meeting

DSS Salsa Contest - Thursday, September 26th

We cordially invite all our DSS families to participate in our Salsa Contest, which will be held on Thursday, September 26th during our PTO meeting. Each participant must enter the contest by signing up in the DSS office in person or via phone call. The deadline to sign up is Monday, September 23rd. We look forward to having many participating families! Bring in those yummy salsas!! We will recognize 3 best salsas!
