Art Festival Help Needed! Please consider Volunteering
Sustainability Help
We're making a special effort at this year's Scituate Art Festival to divert solid waste from the landfill. Volunteers will work behind the food court booths in managing back-of-the-kitchen waste. Duties do NOT include hauling garbage, but instead focus on providing information and assistance to the busy food vendor volunteers. Please copy and paste the following link into your browser to sign up (Fri 10/11 through Mon 10/14). Online training for all volunteers will be provided by our partners at Epic Renewal.
Copy and paste this URL into your browser to volunteer:

We're also posting this invitation on the Scituate Facebook Page and the Scituate Sustainability Committee Facebook page, if you'd rather link from there. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!

Scituate's Chapter of The National Honor Society
Seniors who are not already inducted into NHS, and whose cumulative GPA is 3.9 or higher, received an email on Thursday about potential membership in the National Honor Society. Those seniors were asked to respond to the email by Sept 16.
Current NHS members are expected to actively check the NHS google classroom for important information about community service, scholarships, and chapter events.
Juniors who qualify to be considered for NHS will be invited to apply after the end of first semester.
Freshmen and sophomores are not considered for membership in NHS until the end of first semester of their junior year.

Student community service needed!!
Every year we hold a book sale/fund raiser at the Art Festival. We could use student help, especially during the following times:
Friday October 11, 9:00AM until 1:00PM, and until 4:00PM if able, moving bins of books from a storage unit in the back of the library to the the tent in the front.
Monday, after 4:00PM, moving the empty bins back, inside the library.
We could also use help during the book sale on the three days, basically organizing the tables.
The biggest help we could use is on the Friday morning, moving the bins of the books.
Community Service paperwork will be provided.
Lynn Dion can be contacted at scituatemusic@hotmail.com
Thank you for any help with this project.

West Nile Virus in Rhode Island
Reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) after mosquitoes tested positive for the diseases. WNV is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito, and mosquito season in Rhode Island runs from summer through fall. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, in the shade, and when temperatures are above 55°F.
Here are some precautions that everyone can take to reduce the risk of WNV:
- Use protective clothing
Have students wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
Use bug spray
Use an EPA-approved bug spray with DEET (20–30% strength), picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or paramenthane. Don't use bug spray with DEET on children under two months old.
Maintain screens
Ensure that window and door screens are in good condition and don't have holes or be loose.
Reduce standing water
Remove standing water from containers like buckets, pots, wheelbarrows, boats, and pools.\
Clogged rain gutters and puddles on tarps can also support mosquito larvae.

Non-Discrimination
The Scituate School Department has released an updated non-discrimination policy. Please note that our Scituate High School 2018-2019 student and parent handbook was printed before the new statement was released. Therefore, the non-discrimination policy in this year's handbook is out of date. The current policy with updates is as follows:
The Scituate School Department does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion, national origin, color, creed, political affiliation or disability in any of its educational programs and activities, and in employment and application for employment, as required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, and other federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination. The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Equal Employment Officer, P.O. Box 188, North Scituate, Rhode Island 02857, Telephone: (401) 647-4100; Email: EEO@ScituateSchoolsRI.net. You may also direct inquiries directly to: Office for Civil Rights (Boston Office), U.S. Department of Education, 8th Floor, 5 Post Office Square, Boston, MA 02109-3921, Telephone: (617) 289-0111; Facsimile: (617) 289-0150; Email: OCR.Boston@ed.gov.
