Welcome Back!
First day of school at FAHS is on Wednesday, September 4th. School starts at 8:50.
Our supply list does not exist because we will provide school supplies for students. If they want special pens or pencils, bring them. Otherwise, we will give them the supplies needed for FAHS classes.
Students will be expected to bring their charged iPad to school daily. We will be using them in classes.
Enhancing Focus: Our New Cell Phone Free Policy
Last week, we rolled out our cell phone free classroom policy in the weekly update. If you need to re-read that, here's the link.
We know that this might be a hard change for students, families, and staff. We are here to support students. In case you have questions, here are some answers.
Why a Phone-Free Environment?
We understand that cell phones have great utility, but cell phone use has increasingly become a source of distraction, antisocial behavior, and conflict both at home and at school. Research shows that the mere presence of cell phones in the classroom can be detrimental to student performance. According to a survey and report from Common Sense Media, 50% of teens feel attached to their mobile devices, and 59% of their parents agree that their kids have a problem putting their devices down (U.S. News & World Report).
Studies have shown that limiting cell phone usage in schools can lead to improved academic performance and enhanced student engagement. According to a study by the London School of Economics, schools that implemented a phone ban saw a 6.4% increase in test scores. Additionally, the presence of phones has been linked to increased anxiety and decreased attention spans among students. By reducing these distractions, we aim to create a more conducive learning environment.
What if I need to contact my child during the school day?
In case of an emergency, you can contact the school office, and we will ensure your child receives the message promptly.
Can students use their phones during lunch or breaks?
Yes. Students will have access to their phones during passing time and lunch break.
What if there is a school emergency?
In case of an emergency, we direct our students to safety first. Student cell phones will be unlocked once the students are safe.
What happens if a student is caught using their phone during the school day?
Student use of cell phones will be subject to progressive discipline as outlined by the student management team according to the following procedures:
1st pick-up student loses the phone for the remainder of the day.
2nd pick-up student loses the phone for the remainder of the day and the entire following school day (drop off before 1st hour).
3rd pick-up student will lose the phone and parents will pick up the phone.
Will my student’s phone be safe?
Yes, the student's phone will be in a locked cabinet.
My child has a medical condition that requires the use of their phone. Will exceptions be made?
Exceptions may be made for students with specific medical needs or other exceptional circumstances. Please contact the school administration to discuss any necessary accommodations.
If you have other questions or want to see the cabinets that will be used in our classrooms, the cabinets will be available to look at during our Open House on August 28th at 3-6pm.
