Curriculum News from Family Consumer Science
Career Education is an important part of Family Consumer Science. Students use the Nebraska Career Connections (NCC) website (www.nebraskacareerconnection.com) to access current information concerning career education. Each student is assigned a NCC account starting in the seventh grade. Students will have access to this account not only through their middle school career but also throughout their high school career to help them to manage their career goals and needs.
Also, within the nine weeks that students are in FCS, they will access and apply information from MyPlate. During the middle school years, students are growing extremely rapidly making it even more important to have a healthy lifestyle. MyPlate recommends the following; eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, sleep for at least seven hours each night, drink six to eight glasses of water a day, and complete continuous physical activity for at least 60 minutes each day. There are three components of MyPlate. Those components are: balance calories, increase certain foods (such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and reduce foods high in sodium and sugar. The website offers a number of resources for meeting these recommendations. Visit the website at www.choosemyplate.gov with your student today!

Students Visiting Local Businesses
To WMS students and parents,
We have received repeated complaints about student behavior at the businesses surrounding Westside Middle School after dismissal and on weekends. These issues have become serious enough to warrant additional security.
Whether you are in our building or not, your behavior reflects our school and our district. We often partner with these businesses for events, donations, and sponsorships for our students and staff. When our students are disruptive and behave inappropriately, the partnerships and much-needed services provided by these businesses are in jeopardy. In addition, when these actions take place on private property, those businesses have full rights to call police, who may issue citations or even arrest those responsible.
Parents, please talk to your children about showing respect and following rules when visiting neighboring businesses before and after school. Students, we ask you to help us maintain our great relationships with our community. As always, if you see or hear something you feel is cause for alarm, you are encouraged to reach out to a trusted adult, call 911, or use our Safe Schools hotline at 402-390-2118.
Thank you for your help!
Cold Weather Care for your Mac Book
1. Before turning on your computer, allow it to sit out and reach room temperature (between 50 and 95 Fahrenheit). Powering on the computer while the ambient temperature is outside of this range can cause damage to the computer.
2. Do not leave your computer in the car or any place where it might be exposed to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time (more than a few hours).
3. Keep your computer sleeve/case zipped up to help prevent snow and rain from getting inside, but be aware that the bag is not waterproof.
Please call the WMS Tech Support Department with any additional questions or concerns about your computer. Tech Support Office: (402) 408-8606 Mitch Scheffler & Ben Fraizer
