Laurelhurst Community Update
September 15, 2024
Dear Laurelhurst Community,
What a wonderful first full week at Laurelhurst K-8!
Our students and staff are settling into our school routines; the lunch and recess schedules are running smoothly (volunteering opportunities are available - join me in the cafeteria); and our students are working diligently in their classrooms. We also have music filling our school hallways with our new music program. I hope you are able to join us for our Back to School Nights to learn more about our amazing school.
🦁 SCHOOL NEWS 🦁
Back to School Night is Next Week! Mark Your Calendars!
As a reminder, our Back to School Nights are coming at the end of this month –Wednesday, September 25th for K through 5 and Thursday, September 26th for Middle School, both from 5:30 - 7:15 pm.
While our staff is excited to meet with you all face to face, please keep in mind that BTSN is not a time to discuss your student’s individual needs or academic concerns. It is meant as a celebration of being in school and a chance to experience a taste of your student’s school life. We will have time to discuss your student’s performance and achievements during conference time in November.
K- 5 BTSN is Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30 - 7:15 pm
The format of our Elementary grades BTSN will be an Open House model with your students attending, guiding you around the school, sharing their learning spaces and school routines. Please be sure to visit your student’s PE, Art, Music, and Library teachers as well as our Counselor's office.
Middle School BTSN is on Thursday, September 26th, 5:30 - 7:15 pm
For our Middle School BTSN, you will experience an abbreviated schedule, attending all seven periods of your student's schedule for a short presentation in each class. Middle School Back to School Night is an information evening geared towards adults, so we ask that students do not attend.
Reminder: We Now Use Remind for All Communications
We want and need to be able to reach you. Remind will be the district’s and Laurelhurst School's primary communication tool going forward. PLEASE take a moment to set up your Remind account and set up your preferences: email, text, and/or Remind app. We strongly encourage all parents to have EMAIL turned on at a minimum.
Technology Reminders: Smart Watches and Phones
We strive to maintain a vibrant learning environment, and as such, we have firm limits on the use of technology here at school. We require all phones to be OFF AND AWAY and all smartwatches to be on silent/school mode and used only for checking the time. If you need to contact your student during school hours, please call the main office at 503-916-6210.
If your student fails to comply with this policy, the first offense will result in their phone/watch being held in the main office for them to pick up at the end of the day. The second and all subsequent offenses will result in their phone/watch being held in the main office for an adult to pick up.
🌻 COMMUNITY NEWS 🌻
PTA Notes
The PTA needs you — yes, you! Your involvement and your input helps our Laurelhurst community thrive. There are big and small ways to get involved (it’s quite fun, we promise). To learn more about what we do, join us at our first PTA General Meeting on Tuesday, September 17 at 6pm in the school library; we’ll be voting on our 24/25 budget, sharing an update on fundraising, plus approving our last meeting’s minutes from May.
On Thursday, September 19th from 5:30-7:30pm, we’re hosting our annual Fall Family Social featuring the hottest band in town, The Covered Structures. Buy dinner at one of this year's food trucks, Poblano Pepper (burritos, tacos, and more) or So Cheesy (classic American fare). Bring some cash for dessert from Ice Cream Express! Don't forget your blankets and lawn chairs for seating on our blacktop.
Come kick off the school year at this free event that's sure to be fun for the whole family!
Our annual and very popular Book Fair — happening September 30 - October 4 — is entirely volunteer-run and we desperately need more volunteers to help run registers, help with crowd control (we told you it was popular), set-up, and more! This PTA fundraiser allows our librarian, Ms. Lang, to buy many new books for our school library. To get involved, sign up on Konstella. If you have any questions about Book Fair, contact Kate Peters at kpeters@pps.net!
And don’t forget …
Become an official member of the PTA by paying $12 dues on Konstella
Sign up for Konstella and add your kid(s) to their classroom to stay up-to-date
If you have a kid in 4th or 5th grade, we still need Classroom Coordinators for those grades. Email volunteer@laurelhurstschoolpta.org for more info.
For more info on the PTA and our calendar of events, head to LaurelhurstSchoolPTA.org.
After-School Enrichments Start This Week!
From chess to potions to basketball, sign up now for our Fall Enrichment activities happening before and after school. There are still spots left in many of our classes, so sign up today!
Ms. Lang's Summer Readers Popsicle is This Friday, 9/20
Ms. Lang's Multnomah County Library Summer Readers Program Popsicle Party will be this Friday, 9/20 after school.
Reminder: Please reach out to Ms. Lang if your student participated in MCL Summer Readers but did not receive a t-shirt. She'll add your student to the list of kiddos who can participate in the Popsicle Party.
Roar for Reading: Book Pre-Order Info - Please Read!
We are getting excited for our upcoming Roar for Reading fundraiser Oct 7-18 and welcoming local authors and illustrators to our school. Last week, we sent a special edition Roar for Reading newsletter with links to pre-order each author's book. Here are additional instructions for ordering:
At checkout, select “I would like to pick up this order” under pickup options and then “Laurelhurst” as your school. All books ordered will be signed by the author but not personalized. Please include your students' name and their teacher’s name in the comment box.
Please order your book(s) by Monday, September 23rd. Books will not be for sale on the author visit days (with the exception of Rosanne Parry at Family Literacy Night).
Copies are also available at the school library for your student to borrow.
As always, reach out to roar4reading@gmail.com for questions. Thank you!
Sign Up to Help at the Carnival!
The Laurelhurst Carnival is fast approaching, mark your calendar for Friday, October 25th!
This is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser and we need lots of planning help to make it happen. We need volunteer leads for food, volunteer coordination, the cookie walk, and the haunted house. Please reach out to Tiffany tiffjopete@gmail.com or Kira Kira.billek@gmail.com to get involved.
IN CLOSING . . .
See you Thursday evening at our Family Social. It is a wonderful way to meet other Laurelhurst families, have dinner, and listen to some fun music.
