TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
April 26th 2024
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES families,
What makes a good teacher? I cannot recall a teacher who wasn’t quote “the best teacher,” according to one student or parent, and quote “is the worst teacher,” according to another student or parent. Teachers get compliments and complaints, the same goes for staff. How others perceive us is complicated and changes with time, or situations. You may have loved a teacher until you had a conflict about homework, or you started the year rocky but now your student has grown academically more than ever. Sometimes you don’t realize how great a teacher was for your student, until the following year (or years). It’s common for a student to run up to their ex-teacher the following year, give them a hug, and say they miss them; even if they thought otherwise while they were in their class.
There are obvious qualities we want our teachers to be for our students (kind, patient, understanding, motivating, etc.). These qualities have to be part of the definition of a good teacher, however coming up with one definition is complex. My favorite teacher was Ms. Drake in 5th grade. I don’t remember specifics, other than I really liked her and I found her to be almost like a grandmother; I have no idea how she was academically and in retrospect, it didn’t matter.
“Kids don’t remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.” – Jim Henson
Principal.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Bradley
This week to celebrate Earth Day in Ms. Bradley’s class we made a variety of useful items using recycled materials! Students were very creative in the things they came up with.
In reading we are practicing passages with consonant blends and vowel teams independently. In math, we have been analyzing 2D shapes and discovering that they can be composed of several different shapes.
FIRST
Vancol
This week, the entire school was challenged to build a STEAM project representing Earth Day. The First Grade took home two prizes: Most Artistic (Ms. Nickerson's class with their fairy houses) and Popular Vote (Ms. DiNuzzo's class with their dual robots)! If there had been second place prizes, the other first-grade classes surely would have won as well! Ms. Keene's class made recycled shakers, Ms. Bayno's class made recycled 'bling,' Ms. Quarterman's class created a turtle with egg cartons, and Ms. Vancol's class made an entire Sustainable City, inspired by artwork from the Museum of Modern Art and the bandshell at Lake Eola. Ms. Vancol's class also has been studying geometric shapes, and they made symmetrical paintings and shapes, gearing up for a "Painting with Scissors" project inspired by the artwork of Henri Matisse. No study of geometry would be complete without tangrams, and the class made their own tangram set and completed some awesome tangram puzzles! To cap off the week, our ladybugs hatched, and this morning we hydrated raisins to see if the ladybugs would like to eat those.
Remember we have our end-of-the-year tests rapidly approaching! Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast and a good night's sleep so they do their best! Have a great weekend!

Important Announcements:
Today we had an exciting day of learning in class! Students delved into collecting, categorizing, and representing data using tally marks. They worked with a partner to ask survey questions, engaging in interactive activities while having fun learning together.
Academic Reminders:
A friendly reminder for students to work on their Accelerated Reader (AR) goals for the month of April. Let's aim to reach our goal of 8 points by the end of the month. Additionally, consider setting aside some time on the weekend to work on Study Island and IXL with your child. This not only provides valuable learning opportunities but also serves as a wonderful bonding experience for you both. It will serve as a great review for our upcoming FAST Test.
Celebrations from the Week:
We celebrated Earth Day this week, engaging in various activities to appreciate our planet and promote environmental awareness. It was wonderful to see our students participating and learning about ways to protect our Earth.
Additional Information:
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all families for your continued partnership and support in your child's education. Your involvement and dedication play a vital role in our students' success. Let's continue working together to inspire our young learners to achieve their full potential.
THIRD
This week was jam packed with so much fun! We kicked off the week with an Earth Day competition where we needed to create a sculpture from only recycled materials. Although our class did not win, we still enjoyed the engineering process that created such an awesome castle.
Later in the week we went to the Marine Science Center! We had so much fun learning about marine life and the turtle rehabilitation center. Our favorite part of the trip was getting to dissect owl pellets and touch real sting rays!
FOURTH
Parlewicz
Fourth grade has begun kicking off the end of the year celebrations with an ABC countdown! This week students brought anything to school but a backpack, had some crazy hairstyles and hats, and built some pretty amazing forts! It has been a lot of fun having these activities while we prepare for the FAST test, and they have been some pretty great brain breaks! The ABC countdown will take us all the way to the last day of school where we will prepare to ZIP off to 5th grade!
FIFTH
This week has been a blast in fifth grade! On Earth Day we made some cool earth day sculptures! Then on Tuesday we had a very fun trip to Animal Kingdom! Our kids had a great time learning about the animals in the park and going on fun rides. The safari and Mount Everest were big hits! The rest of the week we have kept busy doing FAST Review and going over all the amazing things we have done this year!

Happy Friday! Numerous studies all around the globe have
revealed that school and family partnership are a significant factor in students' academic achievement.
The ORCA Core Value for April is Cooperation. Our Orcas are not too young to set their own goals, especially when it comes to being a cooperative classmate and a team player! Goals like “I do my part of the work” and “I show respect for all group members, teachers and staff” will help your learners get excited about cooperation!
As we prepare for upcoming testing, cooperation and attention to the task at hand becomes even more important. I love seeing our Orcas excited about earning ORCA tickets and commendations!
We encourage you to continue providing your unwavering support, knowing that not only your child's teachers, but also all school staff, are here to assist you every step of the way.
