Staff Spotlight
Our spotlight employee for this month is our school counselor, Miss Walker. Hired for the 2022-2023 school year, Miss Walker has made quite an impact on the social emotional well-being of our students. The school has seen a positive trend in this area. Not only does Miss Walker prepare all the classroom morning meeting lessons, she serves on the SEL Tier 1, SEL Tier 2, SEL Tier 3, Culture and Climate, and Guiding Coalition Committees. She coordinates many services for our family from outside agencies.
Miss Walker is a Bowlesburg and UT alum and was recruited by Loras College to play basketball. She she still holds 2 records at United Township for this sport. She graduated from Loras College with a psychology degree and later earned her Masters in School Counseling from the same school. She enjoys her position and chose this field because of her personal experience with various school counselors. In her spare time, Miss Walker enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Alex, and his daughter, Vienna.
Supporting Your Students At Home
Secret Stories
Is your student having trouble reading a word?
Ask them if the letters have a Secret Story!
Secret Stories® explain the sounds letters make when they get together, with posters to help kids remember for independent reading and writing.
For example…
AU / AW “Secret” Phonics Story
AU / AW have a huge crush on each other and whenever they have to stand right next to each other in words, they get so embarrassed, they always look down and say –
“ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…”
EU / EW “Secret” Phonics Story
These letters are very “prim and proper” little girls who are deathly afraid of mice! If they see one scamper, they will jump up-high, in complete disgust, screaming —
“eeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuu!”
ER / IR / UR “Secret” Phonics Story
These letters love to go driving in cars, but they are terrible, awful, horrible, ‘no-good’ drivers – so they always have to slam on the brakes!
“ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!”
Fall Celebration and Halloween Parties
On Thursday, October 31st Bowlesburg will be celebrating Halloween by having a costume parade and classroom parties. The parade will begin at 1:30 and will make a lap around our track, weather permitting. Classroom parties will begin immediately following the parade. Please remember that all costumes must be elementary school appropriate. No blood, gore, or weapons allowed. Students should not wear their costumes or make-up to school. There will be time for students to change into their costumes before the parade.
If your students is bringing snacks for the party, please follow the district wellness/snack policy listed below in this newsletter.
From the PTA
The October PTA meeting has been moved to Tuesday, October 15th due to fall break. We were excited to see some new faces at the September meeting, but are still in need of more members. Please contact the PTA to join at the email address below. You can join and support the PTA even if you cannot make the meetings.
PTA is having an Ice Cream Social on Friday, October 18th 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The event is free and it is a great time for students and parents to get together on the playground for a fun evening. If the weather is not cooperative the event will still be held in the gym. We hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social.

Birthday Snacks and School Wellness Policy
If you or your student is planning to bring snacks to school, please follow the District Wellness Policy.
In accordance with the Wellness Policy:
1. ALL SNACKS PROVIDED AT SCHOOL WILL COMPLY WITH THE FEDERAL SMART SNACK GUIDELINES This means that we have to make sure that we are giving students healthy items such as: *fruits and vegetables *low sugar snacks *low fat snacks
2. ALL SNACKS/TREATS BROUGHT INTO THE SCHOOLS MUST BE PREPACKAGED (no homemade treats). Due to the increase in severe food allergies, all food must not only comply with the Smart Snack guidelines but they must also be packaged with a listing of ingredients. Fruits and vegetables do not have to follow this guideline. Healthy snacks are available to purchase from the Food Service Office on the district website.
3. WE ARE MOVING AWAY FROM USING FOOD AS INCENTIVES and FOODS FOR CELEBRATIONS. We want our students to know that celebrating a birthday doesn’t have to mean treats. It can be as simple as a teacher offering a special activity for that child to celebrate a birthday. Please see our website for more information regarding our new wellness initiatives.
