Memorial Day Assembly
Sunrise families,
Students were able to attend a Memorial Day assembly at Sunrise today, organized and led by our Student Leadership Team B and Mrs. Harding. The assembly featured informative presentations about the significance of Memorial Day, singing tributes by all students, and a special piano performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by one of our talented alumni and current EHS senior, Ethan Harding. This event not only honored those who have served our country, but also showcased the hard work and leadership of our students. Thank you to everyone who participated, making this a memorable and meaningful event.
Please note that we do not have school tomorrow (Friday) due to not needing to use a snow day this year. Monday is Memorial Day, so school will not be held. We will see your students back on Tuesday!

Word of the Month for May: HONESTY
Sunrise's word of the month for May is Honesty. Teaching honesty to children is a vital part of supporting their development. Below are ways that honesty can be taught and encouraged at home.
Model Honesty: Your child’s eyes are always open and are always watching (and ears are always listening). They look to see how they should act. Be sure that you yourself are being honest in front of your child.
Discuss Consequences: Begin a discussion about the consequences of lying. Friends or family members may not be able to trust them after they have been dishonest and it takes a long time to rebuild trust or to regain privileges.
Consider the Approach: If you catch your child in a dishonest situation, try to avoid being accusatory by approaching them with concern and empathy. Ask questions like, “What were you trying to accomplish when you lied?” “How did you decide that being dishonest was a way to deal with this situation?"
Reward Honesty: When your child is honest reward them with lots of praise emphasizing how courageous they were for telling the truth.
May Curricular Focus: Smarter Balanced Assessment
At the elementary level, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) is taken by third, fourth, and fifth grade students at public elementary schools in Washington state over the course of several days, usually during the months of April and/or May. Sunrise students will be taking these assessments May 7th-9th and 14th-15th. Fifth grade students also take the state science assessment May 21st-22nd.
Purpose:
The Smarter Balanced Assessment is a standardized test designed to measure your child's understanding of key concepts in English language arts (reading and writing) and mathematics.
It's part of a larger effort to ensure that students are on track for success in college and/or their future careers.
Computer-Based Test:
The Smarter Balanced Assessment is taken on a computer. It includes various types of questions, such as multiple-choice, short-answer, and performance tasks.
English Language Arts (ELA):
In the English language arts section, your child will be tested on their reading and writing skills. This includes understanding and analyzing texts, as well as expressing ideas through written responses.
Mathematics:
In the mathematics section, the test assesses your child's problem-solving abilities, mathematical reasoning, and understanding of mathematical concepts.
The SBA is a standardized test. Standardized tests offer a snapshot of your child's performance on a specific day, and it's important to remember that a single test score does not capture the full spectrum of your child's capabilities.
Children have different learning styles and strengths. Some may excel in traditional test-taking scenarios, while others may showcase their understanding more effectively through hands-on projects, verbal explanations, or creative expressions. Academic success is not solely determined by test scores. Your child's social and emotional growth, interpersonal skills, resilience, and other non-academic qualities contribute significantly to their overall development.
So, while standardized tests results provide valuable information, they are just one piece of information. We set students up for success on this assessment, and we encourage you to also support them in preparing to do their best. Each child is much more than a test score, and all children have the capacity for exponential growth in the continual process of their educational journey.
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
