Principal's News
This week, Martinson Elementary was excited to welcome back the Protecting All Smiles public health dental hygienists! This fantastic program provided a variety of dental services for our students, including screenings, oral health education, fluoride varnish treatments, dental cleanings, sealants, and take-home toothbrushes and toothpaste. If further care was needed, referrals to local dentists were offered. Each student who participated will be bringing home a special “Dental Report Card” with their screening results. This important visit helped support the health and wellness of all our MES students by promoting brighter smiles and healthy habits! Let's see those pearly whites!

Martinson Fall Food Drive
Help us make a difference in November. The Second Grade will be collecting food items to donate to the Marshfield Food Pantry. Some suggested items are canned vegetables, spaghetti sauce, cake or cookie mixes, cereal, pasta, or progresso soups. Grade 2 will be collecting these donations starting Monday, November 4th through Friday, November 15th. Please send any of these items in with your child so that items can be collected each day. Second grade will sort, count, and box up the items to deliver to the food pantry the week before Thanksgiving. We appreciate any and all donations. Let’s make a difference and help out the Marshfield Food Pantry!

Nurse's Notes
Cold and Flu Season
Handwashing: Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching surfaces
Cover cough and sneezes: Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow (not hands) when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly and wash hands immediately.
Stay home when sick: Keep children home if they have a fever, severe cough, or any flu-like symptoms. Encourage a minimum of 24 hours fever-free (without medication) before returning to school.
Boost immunity with healthy habits: Ensure children are getting plenty of sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active.
Avoid touching the face: Remind children not to touch their eyes, nose, or mouth, as germs can enter the body this way and cause illness.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep mucous membranes moist, which can help protect against germs.
Avoid sharing personal items: Remind children not to share water bottles, food, or utensils to avoid spreading germs.
Thanksgiving Safety and Healthy Eating
Incorporate fruits and vegetables: Make half the plate fruits and vegetables. Roasted vegetables, salads, and fruit-based desserts are delicious and nutritious.
Limit sugary drinks: Choose water or lightly sweetened beverages over sugary drinks like soda.
Food allergy awareness: Communicate allergies and label dishes.
Food safety tips: Keep raw turkey separate from other foods during preparation to avoid cross-contamination.
Refrigerate left-overs: Leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours to prevent bacterial growth. Use leftovers within 3–4 days.
Layering for the Changing Weather
Since temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day, it’s important to dress children in layers that can easily be removed if they get too warm.
Make sure clothing fits comfortably: Layers should fit comfortably and not restrict movement.
Extra set of clothes: Packing an extra set of clothes or layers in backpacks.
If your child had any of the following symptoms today, please keep them home
Fever over 100 degrees (must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of tylenol or motrin to return to school)
Vomiting and/or diarrhea (if your child has had any vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours, they should not return to school)
Diagnosis of communicable disease such as strep throat or conjunctivitis (if diagnosed with a communicable disease and prescribed antibiotics, your child must not return to school until they have been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours)
A doctor’s note is required if a student is out five (5) or more consecutive days. If an absence is due to a communicable disease or a bone fracture, a doctor’s note is required the day the student returns to school and should include any recess/gym limitations.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's health, or if you're unsure whether they should attend school, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Library News
This week in the library we read "Fletcher and the Falling Leaves" by Julia Rawlinson. In this story, a young fox named Fletcher is feeling hopeless that his favorite tree is appearing sick and losing all of its leaves. Fletcher tries everything to help the tree but is unsuccessful. This funny and sweet story helped to enrich our discussions of treating others with compassion and coping with change.
