An important aspect of the instructional model at Compass Academy is showing students the connections between what they are learning and potential careers, answering the perpetual student question: "How will I ever use this?" Teachers strive to build experiential learning opportunities and interactions with experts in related career fields into each seminar. One interdisciplinary seminar offered this quarter is a Culinary Arts Specialty class in which students learn about the cultural, economic, and geographic significance of bread throughout history and around the world while also learning how to bake a variety of bread types. Last week, a former history teacher visited that class to talk about a type of German bread that her family makes every winter. She explained the history and cultural significance of the bread, taught them how to make it, and brought in samples for students to try.

Students in the Disaster Management seminar created scientific models that moved in a specific manner to demonstrate the earth science behind a natural phenomenon that can lead to a natural disaster. As they presented on the natural phenomena they chose, students explained the scientific concepts that cause earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and tornadoes.

Students in the Coffee and Chocolate seminar hosted D303 Board members, administrators, and staff at their Hot Chocolate & Jazz event, a class competition in which students created a hot chocolate recipe from a culture of choice. As attendees sampled and rated various types of hot chocolate using student-created score sheets, class members explained the historical and cultural significance of the recipes they used, referring to the infographics they made and displayed to support the facts they were sharing.

Compass Academy students pre-order their lunch, so if your student plans to order lunch, please have them complete the form that is linked above. Students are always welcome to bring food from home, if they prefer. If your student may qualify for free or reduced lunch, please complete this form or have them get a paper copy of the form from the Compass office.
