Tip of the Month: Create a Summer Schedule
"Routines are important for children with autism because they provide a sense of predictability, consistency and structure in their daily lives. Children with autism often struggle with changes and transitions, and a consistent routine can help reduce anxiety and meltdowns. By establishing a routine, parents can help their child feel more independent and confident in their abilities, which can lead to improved behavior and independence." - Baylor College of Medicine: Maintaining a Routine for Your Child with Autism During Summer Break
Tips to Consider:
- Creating a visual schedule that includes photos
- Utilizing timers to help with transitions between activities
- Remember, it's still summer! Extra play time or special events can be included in your summer schedule
- Prepare your child for any unexpected changes to the daily routine (vacation, trip to the zoo, family visiting, etc.)
- Provide positive reinforcement and praise for following the daily routine
"Youāve never read a book like The Reason I Jump. Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within."
This book inspired the documentary, The Reason I Jump, an "immersive film explores the experiences of non-speaking autistic people around the world."
