During the months of March and April, Bryant teachers will be conducting “Math Monday’s and Fluency Friday’s". Students in grades K-5 will spend the first 10-15 minutes of the school day reviewing math concepts on Monday and practicing their reading fluency on Friday. The purpose of these activities is to provide students with an extra practice and review, in preparation for their Spring FAST reading and math tests in May. If you would like more information on how to help your child with reading and math please contact your child’s teacher. They have great ideas and are willing to help.

Thank you for attending your child’s conference last week. If you were unable to attend please contact your child’s teacher and they will schedule another time for you. Our goal for parent conferences is 100% attendance, so thank you for your support in helping us reach our goal.

Dear Bryant Families,

It has been a privilege and a honor to serve as the principal of Bryant School for the past 12 years. I am grateful for the opportunity that I have had to work with such wonderful students, staff and families. At the end of this year I will be retiring and am looking forward to spending more time with family and friends. As I begin this new chapter in my life I will always hold dear all of the connections and memories that I have made with my Bryant family.

Next school year, Dr. Angela Holcomb will begin serving as the principal for Bryant Elementary School. Dr. Holcomb has been with the Sioux city Community School District since 2014. She began as an assistant principal at Perry Creek Elementary and Clark Early Childhood Center. While in this role, Dr. Holcomb was named the 2017 Iowa Assistant Elementary Principal of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa organization. Currently, she is the principal of Riverside Elementary.

Before joining the District, Dr. Holcomb served as the regional director with Heartland Area Education Agency in Johnston, Iowa. Prior to that, she was the Director of Special Education for the West Des Moines Community School District.

Dr. Angela Holcomb holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Buena Vista University, a master’s degree in education from Drake University, a specialist degree in educational leadership from Drake University, and a doctorate in education leadership from Drake University. Please welcome her to Bryant School.

Great things are happening in fifth grade! In Social Studies we wrapped up our study of the American Revolution. Thanks to the generosity of the Sertoma Club, each student was able to take home his/her very own copy of the Declaration of Independence! We have now moved on to our next unit, Westward Expansion. In Science we finished our study of Ecosystems. Students each made a poster or a PowerPoint to demonstrate their knowledge of food webs and the interactions of living and nonliving things. We are 1/3 of the way through our unit on fractions in Math. Students have taken the adding and subtraction fractions test and have moved into multiplying fractions. The end of the unit will focus on dividing fractions. Students are currently working on a research report for Writing and are learning how to use and properly cite sources. The next FAST test for oral reading fluency will be coming up the first week of May so please encourage your child to read at home! We will continue with our monthly reading incentives as well. The goal for fifth grade is to read 162 words per minute aloud on a fifth grade level passage. You will learn more about our reading goals during our upcoming parent activity in March! Thanks for all you do at home to support and encourage your child!

Welcome to Bryant! I graduated from Morningside College in 1994 with a Bachelors in Science of Nursing. I have worked as a School Nurse since 2003. School-age kids need 10 to 12 hours of sleep at night. Homework, sports, after-school activities, TVs, computers, video games, and hectic family schedules might interfere with kids getting enough sleep.

Lack of sleep can cause irritable or hyperactive types of behavior and may make it difficult for kids to pay attention in school. It is important to have a consistent bedtime, especially on school nights.

Tips for a good night’s sleep:

• Include a winding-down period in the bedtime routine
• Stick to a bedtime and alert your child 30 minutes and 10 minutes beforehand
• Keep TVs and computers out of the bedroom
• Keep child’s bedroom dark, cool, and quiet
• Avoid caffeine

2020-2021 BRYANT KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

APRIL 16 & 17

We are taking a survey to determine the number of children who will be entering Kindergarten at Bryant School next fall. If your child is enrolling for the first time, please follow the above link to the Kindergarten Registration Form. Please complete the form and return it to Bryant Elementary School .

Our Kindergarten registration is Thursday & Friday, April 16 & 17, 2020. Children who will be entering Kindergarten next fall will receive invitations to this registration. If you do not have a child eligible for Kindergarten enrollment, but know of someone in the Bryant district who does, please ask him or her to contact us at 279-6819.

Note: A child must be 5 years old on or before September 15, 2020 to be eligible for admission to Kindergarten. A copy of the birth certificate and immunization record will be required at registration.

Every voice matters in Sioux City Community Schools. That’s why we need to hear from all parents and guardians. Provide feedback using our District and School Climate Survey, which is open February 4 - March 13. The survey is available in English or Spanish.

How to take the survey:

• A link will be sent to parents/guardians by email, text message, and voicemail.
• If you do not receive a link, please contact 712-224-7471 to request a link.
• Paper surveys are available for pick up at your child’s school.
• Take the survey online at your child’s school while at conferences.

The survey asks for feedback on student and academic support, safety and behavior, school leadership, and family involvement. We will use the results to better understand our students’ needs, determine our strengths, and identify opportunities for improvement.

All survey responses are strictly confidential. The District has partnered with an independent research and communications firm, K12 Insight, to administer the survey and compile the results. District employees will not know who participates or see individual responses.

Census Data And The Impact on Public Schools

Public schools in Iowa will be directly impacted by the 2020 census. The 2010 census estimated there were 731,975 children in Iowa ages 0-18. Children ages 0-4 are typically undercounted, and Iowa estimates 4,726 children were not included in the census.

Iowa receives over $8 billion annually from the federal government based on population estimates from the 2010 census, including funds for Special Education Grants, the National School Breakfast & Lunch Programs, Head Start, and many other education programs vital to the success of Iowa’s children. Those 4,726 children who weren’t counted in 2010 are now in grades 6-9, and the state has lost out on millions of dollars in federal funding each year for those children’s education.

We cannot let the census become another barrier to the funding of our student’s educations. The Sioux City Community School District is asking for the help and support of all families in our district to ensure that every child is counted.
