Dear Friends
February 7, 2023

Spring Into Kindergarten will be held on Wednesday, March 1, from 4-7 p.m. at district elementary schools. Families should complete and return their kindergarten registration paperwork that day. Learn more at www.sno.wednet.edu/kindergarten.
February is Career and Technical Education Month
Did you know?
- More than 88% of career and technical education (CTE) students plan to continue to postsecondary education.
- Six in 10 students are planning to pursue a career in a CTE area they are exploring in high school.
- Almost one-third of CTE students have an opportunity to earn college credit and/or industry certification through CTE.
- The Snohomish School District offers student credits for 29 different college courses, and there are 52 different approved CTE classes offered at our five secondary schools.
- The top three skills and experiences that students report gaining in their CTE classes are:
- Skills to help with employment.
- Real-world examples to help them understand the relevance to their academic coursework.
- The chance to work as a team.
CTE is a multi-year sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to post-secondary education and careers. CTE programs promote student interest and academic success, while also developing technical and soft skills training necessary to meet 21st century workplace demand. Graduates of today’s CTE programs are better prepared for high-wage, high-skill and high demand careers.
Snohomish School District offers a variety of CTE career pathways including Agriculture Science, Business and Marketing, Family and Consumer Science, Health Sciences, and Skilled and Technical. The pathways provide students with a suggested sequence of courses that can lead to college credit and/or industry certification. Learn more about the district’s CTE programs at www.sno.wednet.edu/cte.
February Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Black History Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join with us this month as we acknowledge Black History Month.
Black History Month origins date back more than 100 years. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), founded in 1915, originally designated the second week of February as a time for researching and promoting the achievements of Black Americans. The second week of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
By the late 1960s, the week had evolved into a month on many college campuses. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called upon the public to honor the often-over-looked contributions of Black Americans to American history. Since 1928, the ASALH has selected a theme for each year. The theme for 2023 is “Black Resistance”
For some more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link.
