Spring Sports Banquet: Thu. June 13, 2024 | 5:30PM | Muckleshoot Tribal School
Reflecting on this year at Muckleshoot Tribal School there are many reasons to celebrate. We had multiple appearances at the WIAA 1B State Tournaments.
Wrestler Eddie Cormier-Higgins made his 3rd straight appearance at the “Mat Classic” in the Tacoma Dome.
Dora Davis led 2 teams to their respective tournament while earning Coach of the Year honors in both sports. The Kings boys basketball team found themselves back in Spokane after putting together a very impressive season capped by a thrilling game vs Wilbur-Creston-Keller @ Auburn High School. They eventually lost in the Opening Round in a loser out game vs Cusick, a frequent participant in the State Tournament.
This spring we were again fortunate enough to witness our young student athletes grow right before our eyes as our Lady Kings marched through this historic season. For the first time in school history defeated Quilcene early in the season at MTS, it was the first SeaTac League loss for QHS since 2011. Muckleshoot beat Quilcene for a second time to clinch the first ever SeaTac League Championship for the MTS Fastpitch program. The Lady Kings battled their way through the playoffs, winning a game here at MTS in front of a jam packed and loud crowd of supporters that clinched a spot in the WIAA 1B State Tournament. Our Muckleshoot Lady Kings proved to be a resilient group, after losing the first game at the State Tournament in Yakima, our girls found themselves with their backs against the wall in a win or go home rematch with the Lady Loggers from Darrington. It would be the second game of the day for both teams and the third matchup of the season. The Lady Kings fought back to tie the game after falling behind 4-0 early in the game and eventually took the lead. To the credit of the team from Darrington, they would not back down and regained the lead in the top half of the 6th inning. It could have been easy for the team to be satisfied with how far they had come and all they had accomplished. That was not the DNA of this team, demonstrating great discipline at the plate earning key walks, and combined with clutch hits they were able to blow the game open and take the lead for good. They ended up being eliminated in the next day to conclude their season but it was an inspiring run and they made history coming one win away from placing in their first ever appearance at the state tournament.
This spring we also had two members of our track and field team qualify for the District Tournament. Larissa Mathias qualified to compete in Javelin, while Freshman Delight Vaomu qualified in shot put for the second year in a row. These two individuals joined our Lady Kings basketball team who this winter surprised a lot of people around the league and surrounding area by qualifying for the Tri-District Tournament, a huge accomplishment for first year coach Tera Baker and her team.
Added to the team success individual MTS Kings and Lady Kings were well represented in the SeaTac All League Selections:

Elementary
We had a busy month in Elementary! Our 3rd through 5th graders participated in the SBAC assessment for two weeks. They did fantastic and were cheered on by the rest of the elementary through encouraging words and posters. We also had several field trips take place to Point Defiance Zoo, Vashon, Boise Falls and Saltwater State Park. On May 23, the elementary students were led by their No Place for Hate Committee in a school wide walk around the track to promote this important initiative. June is going to be a fun and busy month for us!
Secondary
We have officially been approved to be a No Place for Hate school by the Anti-Defamation League. On May 23, we celebrated kindness and community with a school community walk. Secondary students led a Coastal Jam that truly showcased the power of student voice and togetherness at MTS.
Additionally, seniors attended a floating prom during a cruise around Seattle on May 11th. We are thankful for all who took part organizing this memory-making event for our future MTS graduates. This was followed up by a presentation to Tribal Council on May 16th. The future leaders of Muckleshoot thanked those who journeyed with them during their youth and described the paths they hope to take in the future. We have future police officers, military enlistees, nurses, teachers, and forestry caretakers among the future leaders of the community.
June is an exciting month with graduations, senior speeches, and end of the year celebrations. Thank you ALL for trusting us with your kids during the 23-24 school year!

NYCP Activities
NYCP took 10 students to Washington DC for the CLOSE UP Native Youth Summit. During this week-long program, Native youth develop the skills and attitudes to become active citizens in their Tribes and communities. While exploring Washington, DC, students observe government officials and Tribal leaders in action as they advocate for issues impacting Indian Country. With Close Up, students had the opportunity to: Engage in workshops with students from different tribal communities and discuss the most pressing issues facing those communities; Examine the historical relationship between Tribes and the U.S. government; Explore current issues impacting Indian Country; and
Create Tribal Action Initiatives to address their concerns and present them to Tribal leaders, political experts, and policymakers.
Through NYCP, our Forestry and Fisheries classes have been able to conduct research at White Lake the past months. They have recently transitioned their project to Green River! Our future land stewards are working hard to collect meaningful data out on the land in our lake and river!
NYCP took John Bush’s Independent Living class to Junior Achievement in Auburn! Students have been working in class on knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. At Junior Achievement they have been able to participate in a simulation where they are given a life scenario which includes their family, job, salary and bills. The students then budget what they need to set aside for their bills and head to the store fronts to make their payments and see if they made wise budgeting and credit decisions.
