The link between social media and substances
Social media can be a great way to stay connected to friends and family, find local activities and events, and join online or in-person groups. However, social media can also influence and negatively impact youth. Alcohol and tobacco companies frequently use social media to market their products to youth. Posts and other original content may glorify using alcohol or other substances. Social media "challenges" may even encourage youth to use alcohol or other substances. Check out Partnership to End Addiction's first video (above) in their Fact Check series, The Link Between Social Sedia and Substances, to learn more!
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) “Cannabis: The Facts You Need to Know”
With many states legalizing the use of cannabis for adults 21 and over, teens may have questions about whether the drug is safe. Teen brains are still developing and are particularly vulnerable to negative health effects of cannabis, such as memory problems and addiction. NIDA created an article, “Cannabis: The Facts You Need to Know,” the online interactive “Cannabis and the Brain,” and the activity sheet “Help Spread the Facts About Cannabis” along with a lesson plan that can inform teens about the negative health effects of cannabis, such as memory problems and addiction, and support teens in making healthy choices.
