Facilitating Community Conversations
Having strong facilitation skills are key component of running an engaging public program. In this workshop, participants will learn facilitation techniques that maximize the use of their skills and settings and learn strategies to help patrons stay motivated to learn. Participants will come up with facilitation strategies that will enhance the programs they are developing and practice a few strategies in front of their peers.

Opening Up the Rhode Island Historical Society Film Archives
Becca Bender recently assumed the newly created position of Film Archivist & Curator of Recorded Media at the Rhode Island Historical Society. RIHS has one of the largest regional film collections in the country, and Becca will give a glimpse into its vast holdings, as well as discuss her plans for increasing access to the materials and expanding the Rhode Island communities represented among RIHS’ audiovisual collections.
Additionally, Becca will speak on the topic of providing special collections materials to filmmakers, and finding a balance when working with these often demanding researchers. Prior to joining RIHS, Becca worked for many years as a documentary archival producer, so she understands both worlds!

Young Adult Roundtable: Computational Thinking
One way to start thinking about what computational thinking is all about is to take part in an activity that connects library staff to an actual project that teens might work on. In this session participants get hands-on experience and a chance to discuss what computational thinking is and how it can be integrated into teen activities.
This training is part of the YALSA/COSLA IMLS grant funded project "Transforming Teen Services: a Train the Trainer Approach."

What Libraries Need to Know About the Open Meetings and Access to Public Records Acts
Join your public library colleagues to learn or refresh your understanding of the library's and Board of Trustees' legal responsibilities for adhering to the State's Access to Public Records and Open Meetings Laws. Once you understand your responsibilities, you can establish or update procedures for your library. Having procedures in place will make the process easier when there are requests for library records or the library is challenged about access to meetings or records of their proceedings. (The subject and objectives of this program are distinct from the Public Library Records Management program scheduled for March 20.)
You will learn how to determine when the Open Meetings Act applies to the libraries' meetings and when an executive session is appropriate. Other statutory requirements for meetings, such as posting notices, amending agendas, and maintaining minutes will be discussed. Special Assistant Attorney General Lisa A. Pinsonneault will describe how to determine whether a document is a public record and how to respond to a citizen's request. Important procedural provisions will be discussed, including the way to respond to public record requests and establishing guidelines for public access.
Frequent trouble areas and significant legal cases will also be reviewed for both laws.

3D Modeling in TinkerCad and Fusion 360
If you're ready to go beyond downloading 3D files from Thingiverse into creating your own 3D designs, this hands-on workshop will introduce you to tools you can use to make the objects of your imagination a reality. Join us to learn basics of 3D modeling using TinkerCad and Fusion360 from the team at FabNewport, who serve as a partner on the PVD Young Makers program that has brought makerspaces into the libraries across Providence.
Please bring your own device for the hands-on portion of this event (and your imagination!)

Public Library Records Management
Records created and received by public libraries are subject to a process called records retention. Libraries are required by the State of Rhode Island to follow a schedule for the retention and disposition of their records. Schedule LG13: Public Library Records contains the requirements for public library records.
In this session, you will learn how to identify public records, use the approved retention schedules, and protect records until time for their final disposition (make permanent or destroy). You will also gain an understanding of the role that records management plays in open government. Approved records schedules will be referenced from Municipal Departments Records Retention Schedules and General Records Schedules.
Understanding how to use records schedules will keep you organized and reduce space needed for storage.
The session is recommended for public library directors and administrators and administrative personnel.
