Meet Saber C: Balancing Academics and Hockey
Can you tell us a bit about how you first got interested in hockey and what has kept you passionate about it? I first got into hockey when we went to Idaho over the winter one time for a vacation and my parents friend’s kids played. Then, when we came back to Arizona baseball was canceled and my mom gave me a list of sports to play, and hockey interested me the most. I am still passionate about it because of the friends, the teamwork, and how fun it is.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from being part of a team sport like hockey? The most valuable thing I have learned from hockey is to take accountability of your own mistakes and to put others before yourself when need to.
Have you faced any challenges or setbacks in hockey or school that you’ve had to overcome? How did you handle them? With hockey one challenge was to become more self-confident. I put myself down a lot and thought I wasn’t good enough. But over the years practicing my skills and working on them and home and on the ice has helped a lot. With school one challenge for me is school in specific, however I procrastinate with my homework which makes things worse. Like I said before, with my mom and sister reminding me that school is more important than hockey it makes me look forward to something when I am done.
What’s been one of your proudest moments on the ice? How did it feel to achieve that? One of my proudest moments on the ice was winning the 16U A division state championship. It was a phenomenal feeling to have this opportunity to experience with my friends and teammates.
Balancing academics and hockey must take a lot of dedication. How do you manage to stay on top of both? Do you have any tips for staying organized? It is really hard to keep up with both. Sometimes I struggle to keep up. My mother and sister have to remind me that school comes first before hockey. If I don’t get my homework done I don’t go to hockey. Staying organized isn’t my strong suit but I do think having something you look forward to do after your homework is done helps keep me motivated to finish it.
FINAL THOUGHT FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Are you ready to take a break? We are! The last day of school is Friday, December 20, 2024. Winter Break begins on Monday, December 23, 2024 and ends on Friday, January 3, 2025. During this time, the office will NOT be open and teachers will NOT be available. Please feel free to send any of us an email. We will answer when we return or check our emails.
Remember! Break is a perfect time to catch up on attendance and course progress if you are behind!
During the upcoming Winter Break (12/23/24-1/3/25), we will turn on automatic progression for all Edgenuity courses so that you can continue working on your courses over the break. This means that you will be able to progress through your courses without delays or disruptions while HHSO is closed for Winter Break. Upon our return, teachers will review your work and may reset quizzes, tests, and/or assignments that do not adhere to current policies and expectations.
If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please don't hesitate to reach out to your coach or the teacher.
