Photo of the Week
Back to Back and Face to Face
One of the protocols used in the new literacy program to promote deep engagement and discourse is called the Back to Back and Face to Face protocol. Pictured below are some students from Mrs. Murphy's fourth grade class who are sharing and reflecting on what inspired them to write their poems.
Adults benefit from this protocol, too! In the second photo you'll see staff members engaging in the protocol at last week's faculty meeting focused on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors across all classrooms.
Dear Families,
This week, we re-introduced the schoolwide reinforcement system for recognizing positive behavior across settings at school. Called the Falcon Four Shout Out, students know that any staff member may issue a Shout Out slip (see below) for showing behaviors in line with Floral's Falcon Four commitments- Be Respectful, Try Your Best, Work Together, and Be You.
We'll share much more information along the way about our efforts to support all students with positive behavior at school (in fact, it is part of our school improvement goals for this year). For now, be on the lookout for any bright yellow Shout Outs that your child brings home and celebrate their strong efforts to contribute to a safe and positive learning community for all students and staff.
Our third grade classes will be traveling to the Plimoth Patuxet Museum in Plymouth this Wednesday. Parents and caregivers are reminded to review the information sent home by the classroom teacher, especially about what students should bring and the special drop-off and pick-up times, as this trip extends beyond the regular school day.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Lisa

NEW - Attendance Letters
In the upcoming week, students with five or more absences will bring home an attendance letter notifying families of their current attendance record. The Department of Education considers students "chronically absent" if they miss 18 or more days in a school year. At this rate, students with five or more absences are on a path toward chronic absenteeism for the 2024-2025 school year.
Regular attendance is essential for academic achievement and social growth, both of which impact a child’s overall development. Frequent absences lead to missed learning opportunities and can affect progress in key areas, especially with reading on grade level. Whenever possible, please plan vacations, celebrations (such as family birthdays) and non-essential appointments outside the school year to ensure students are present each day school is in session. By keeping your child home only when truly necessary—such as for fevers or vomiting—you’re helping instill lifelong habits of reliability and responsibility. You are also supporting long-term academic progress to support your child with meeting grade level outcomes in middle school and high school.
Thank you for your support and for prioritizing your child’s consistent attendance!
NEW - Reminder: Pack a Snack Daily
Classes hold a daily snack time (the time is determined by the classroom teacher and is based on the classroom schedule and lunch time). Please remember to send in a snack for your child each day. As an option, you can encourage your child to eat breakfast at school each morning (and save any leftover breakfast items for snack time).
Snacks are not available for purchase at school and are not provided by our school nurse.
If your family facing challenges with providing a daily snack for your child, please contact the Floral school nurse or your child's teacher. We are here to help- no judgment.
NEW - Scholastic Book Fair Closes on Monday- Orders Due in By TOMORROW
Please send in any orders by tomorrow, Monday, so volunteers can fill orders and deliver them to your child (or place an order with Scholastic if we are out of copies here at school).
The remaining books need to be packed up for a scheduled pick-up on Tuesday.
Thank you for all of your support- many, many families took advantage of this sale in support of our school.

Notes from the Nurses
*Cold and flu season is upon us! We encourage all students and families to protect themselves with an annual flu vaccination.
*If your child is absent due to illness it may be helpful to refer to the Shrewsbury Public School policy:
"This is always a difficult decision right before the school day starts. If your
child had a fever of 100 or higher or diarrhea and/or vomiting the night
before, the child should stay home to allow them to recover. Keep in mind
that you know what is best for your child and this decision should be yours,
not theirs. A child who has a fever of 100 or higher, has vomited or has
diarrhea at school, will be dismissed. We ask that the child remain at home
until they are fever free for 24 hours without the benefit of Tylenol or Motrin.
In the case of diarrhea and/or vomiting, we ask that they remain home until
they are eating a regular diet and their bowels have returned to normal."
Please reach out with any questions or concerns. We are here to help.
Best,
Maureen Pellizzari, BSN, RN, BA

Broken Crayons Wanted for Community Service Project
A message from Arush Jagan, 9th grader and alum of Floral Street School:
I'm reaching out to you with a heart full of excitement and purpose. As members of the Floral Street School community, we have the incredible opportunity to make a positive impact on our environment and support a meaningful cause.
I kindly request that you donate any used or broken crayons you have at home. These crayons, which may seem insignificant or destined for the trash, can be transformed into something beautiful and purposeful.
Together with a friend, I have taken on a project to repurpose these crayons into unique and heartfelt gifts for a non-profit organization.
This initiative not only helps reduce our carbon footprint but also breathes new life into materials that would otherwise go to waste.
Let's come together as a community to support this endeavor and make a difference, one crayon at a time.
Thank you for your generosity and support.

Volunteers at Our School Need to Have a CORI Check on File with Shrewsbury Public Schools
We love to have volunteers! Please be aware that all volunteers in our school (field day, classrooms, field trips, etc.) must have a current CORI (Criminal Record Offender Information) check on file with Shrewsbury Public Schools. CORI checks are good for 3 years. If you are anticipating volunteering in any capacity at our school this year, please be sure you have a current CORI and if not, please complete a new form and bring it along with your drivers license or other government issued identification to Floral administrative assistants, Lynda McBride and Jen Umile. They can check your current CORI status or can get a CORI processed for you. They can be reached at lmcbride@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us or jumile@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us. CORI checks take approximately one week to process.
