Dear Open High Family,
Join me in congratulating senior Sidney King who received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship program based on her outstanding PSAT scores. Younger sister and junior, Sierra King, is also being celebrated at the Policy Pathways Fifth Annual Fall Celebration in October. Both students are busy! Among other activities they are both leaders with the OHS Speech and Debate Team, the Stingers. We are so proud of the Kings!
Thank you, thank you for the donations to restock the PTSA closet! We were ready for a yummy muffin breakfast on Friday for our wonderful students, teachers, and staff. Thanks to all who support the PTSA and our sweet school.

Senior Update

All seniors will take a tour of the University of Richmond on Thursday, October 10 when 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT. This will include free lunch at the award-winning Heilman Dining Center! Return permission forms to Caroline ASAP.
All seniors will attend the VACRAO College Fair on October 23. Please register HERE and return permission forms to Caroline ASAP.
All seniors need to complete THIS FORM on after high school plans! This goes to Josh White, your Future Center Navigator who is here to assist you with college, employment, enlistment, and scholarships. He can be found each Friday in the Student Lounge and is available to students and parents at jwhite11@rvaschools.net.
All seniors are excpected to complete a Senior Project as part of their Open educaiton. Proposal deadline is September 30.
The International High School Essay Contest sponored by Upsilon Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is open to ALL college-bound seniors, in the Richmond Metro area. See application below. The deadline for all entries is October 20, 2023.
Juniors and seniors can apply for membership to the National Honor Society. Please read the Guidelines carefuly and submit the Activity Form if you qualify. If you have questions, please see Micah, the NHS Advisor. Deadline is September 30.
Hispanic Heritage Month
We continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage with daily trivia games related to different Spanish-speaking countries. Games will be posted on Google Classroom and the digital announcement board, and winners will receive prizes! On Fridays, we invite students to participate in Dress Up Spirit Days as follows:

Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. supports the empowerment and development of young ladies in middle and high school through the Delta Academy and GEMS. These signature programs help to develop and instill a CAN DO attitude, the importance of excelling academically, goal setting and planning for the future, and creating compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community. The program is completely free to the young ladies. See attached flier and Register HERE.
The Happily Natural Day and The Diverse Birth Collective Organization are both hosting a Fall Festival on October 27th, from 1 PM to 6 PM at the Sankofa Community Orchard. This event aims to support families in need by providing clothing donations and free perinatal/postpartum boxes, along with valuable information. They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with various activities during the festival. Opportunities include assisting in the community garden, face painting for children, and helping to manage kidsβ activities and distribute candy. Open students are expected to complete 30 individual volunteer hours each year.

PTSA
The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Please become a member and make your voice heard. Your dues are an important funding source for our school. Joining does not obligate you to anything although we are always looking for more help! Extra donations are also very much appreciated. Consider linking your Kroger Shopper's Card to the Open High PTSA.
