A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
As students are adjusting and settling into their new routines, we’re excited to see them engaging in various clubs and activities. Handball, flag football, and morning volleyball have all started, and the energy is fantastic! We’d also like to share some important upcoming events.
On Tuesday, September 24th, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM we will be hosting an Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers, explore the classroom environment, and get an overview of what to expect this school year.
Following that, on Thursday, September 26th, we will hold our annual Terry Fox Run to support cancer research. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for physical activity and the weather, as they will be participating in this meaningful event.
Lastly, on Friday September 26th, we will recognize Orange Shirt Day to honor and remember the survivors and victims of residential schools. Students are encouraged to wear orange, and we are tentatively scheduled to join Ladysmith Secondary School for a field event featuring singing and dancing.
Huy'ch'qa,
Dionte Jelks

As our students return to school in September, we have various safety drills that must be completed. For example, we conduct six fire drills during the school year. Additionally, we conduct lockdown drills in coordination with RCMP.
We prepare and announce these drills for our families so that we can learn from the experience. During drills, our school team will change elements of the drill to gauge the effectiveness of our safety protocols. For example, during a fire drill, a school staff member may stand at an exit and ask teachers and students to use their secondary exit to learn if students know where to go.
Orange shirt Day honors the survivors, and remembers those lost, from Indian Residential Schools. We wear orange to remember the real-life story of Phyllis Webstad, a survivor of St. Joseph Mission School in Williams Lake, BC, who’s brand new orange sweater was taken from her on her first day of residential school when she was just a little girl. Please wear your orange shirt on September 27!
Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox Run is scheduled for Thursday September 26, 2024. This annual event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to honor Terry Fox's legacy and contribute to a noble cause. We encourage all families to participate and help us raise funds for cancer research. Your generosity and active involvement will undoubtedly inspire our students and instill in them the values of compassion and empathy. Don't forget to bring a loonie or toonie this week!
Family Wellness Hub
Families with children from newborn to eight years old are invited to participate in the Nanaimo Early Years Family Wellness Hub on Wednesday, October 23.
This FREE event will provide families with resources, services and supports; there will be playgroups and activities; information about early learning and development and healthy eating tips.
The event will be hosted at Country Club Mall, 3200 North Island Highway, Nanaimo from 10am until 2pm on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Drop by.
Parent Advisory Committee
Welcome to our Hot Lunch program for Ladysmith Intermediate School for the 2024/2025 school year.
Our hot lunches are every Monday (except holidays). The Fall menu has been posted and consists of Panago Pizza, Subway sandwiches, and Ironworks Crêpes. Feel free to plan ahead and order all of your lunches at one time. Please ensure you have ordered and paid for all meals by the Thursday prior to the scheduled hot lunch day (Thursdays at 10:00 pm is the order deadline). Unpaid orders auto-cancel within one hour of you starting your online order, so be sure to click on the checkout button and continue to the payment area to complete your order. You will get a confirmation email for the order. You will also receive an email the day before your paid hot lunch as a reminder not to pack a lunch for your child. Yay!
There is a Pay-It Forward feature for every hot lunch in which you can purchase a lunch for a student in need. These lunches are handed out in a discreet manner. Thank you so much to last year's donors for purchasing lunches for our students. It is always appreciated.
Should your child miss their scheduled hot lunch due to being absent from school, please contact the office to arrange for your child's lunch to be left at the office for pick up. If we do not hear from you, the lunch will be given to another student as a Pay-It-Forward.
Volunteers are welcome! LIS has a small kitchen so we only have room for one or two adults working alongside the hot lunch coordinator (Devon Warren). This is a great way to make your child's day at school! There are a number of ways to inquire about volunteering: Reach out to Devon, tick off the box for volunteering on Munchalunch, email the PAC, or reach out on the PAC Facebook page (Ladysmith Intermediate School PAC).
Please ensure you have a valid criminal record check completed and also have your annual volunteer form completed. Here is the link: https://www.sd68.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/AP-310-Volunteers-1.pdf
Please reach out to your helpful PAC members by email at ladysmithintermediatepac@hotmail.com if you have any issues with ordering. Thank you for supporting LIS!

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
