Wiggin Street Parent Update
April 12, 2024
Better Together
Dear Wiggin Street Families,
First of all, I want to thank Blue Denim Tree Service for donating mulch for the front of our school this week. Also, thank you to all the Kenyon employees and students that volunteered during their day of service to pull weeds and mulch. They worked in the rain to make our school beautiful, and we truly appreciate it! The blossoms from our crabapple trees also make a nice touch. Just another reason that we say that we are better together!
I want to remind you all that grades 3-5 will be taking their ELA Ohio State Tests next Wednesday and Thursday. Attendance is so important especially on these days. Other testing dates are listed in the Upcoming Events. I also listed all of the important upcoming events throughout May, so you have the end of the year events for your calendar.
We have the Spring Fun Festival coming up next Friday, and the kids are so excited! There are multiple opportunities to volunteer, and we appreciate all the help. This event would not be possible without our parents and community volunteers. We are in desperate need for 9 adult volunteers to supervise the inflatables. Please consider signing up below.
Lastly, our spring flower sale ends on Monday, so don't forget to order. They arrive May 6th and will make the perfect Mother's Day gift!
Warmly,
Christy Grandstaff
Pre-Sale Tickets- Envelopes coming home Monday, April 15th!
In hopes to reduce ticket sale lines, Friends of Wiggin Street will be holding a pre-sale on tickets starting Monday for the Spring Fun Festival games and activities. Envelopes will be coming home with students on Monday. The cost is $5.00 for a 10 count punch card for games, and $5.00 for a wrist band for the inflatables. Your Wiggin Street student can bring the cash amount to their homeroom teacher and a punch card with their name on it will be waiting at the Will-call table at the festival. Weather permitting, the table will be outside on the front lawn.
Spring Fun Festival Volunteers Needed
We are in desperate need of adults 18 and over to supervise the inflatables in the gym. Currently, we need 9 more volunteers for that area. If we do not have enough volunteers, we will have to close down that area. Please click below to sign up to volunteer for a time period. There are other needs listed as well.
Desserts Needed
The 4 Corners Game is always a big hit! Students can win cakes, brownies, cupcakes, and other desserts. These items are greatly needed and can be donated the morning of the 19th, and brought to the office, or students can deliver them to Mrs. Clippinger's room.
We are also in need of the following donations: cookies, brownies, Rice Crispy Treats, etc. for desserts in the cafeteria.
Thank you!!!
Last day to order is on Monday, April 15th!
Spring Flower Sale Ends April 15th
Our Spring Flower Sale is in full swing and runs April 1-15th. You should have received an email from Fortmeyer with a shopping link. Flower pick up at Wiggin Street will be on May 6th which is just before Mother's Day.
Road Closure begins May 28th!
Please read this article regarding the roundabout construction at the intersection of Route 229 and Wiggin Street that will require road closure.
Village council has scheduled a special session for Monday April 22nd at 7pm to update the community regarding the construction between May 28, 2024 and November and how travel will be impacted to and from the village. All parents and staff are welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions. Please send questions prior to the meeting, so Council has a better chance to prepare and provide the most accurate information. People can attend in person at the community center or over zoom. The village website will have all the information.
Grades 3-5 Ohio State Testing Dates
Please keep these dates in mind when scheduling appointments for April. Make-up testing takes some of our educators away from intervention instruction, so we like to limit it as much as possible.
3rd-5th Grade ELA Ohio State Test: April 17 & 18
5th Grade Science Ohio State Test: April 23 & 24
3rd-5th Grade Math Ohio State Test: April 30 & May 1
This site for students and families has lots of great information about the state test and 3rd grade Reading Guarantee as well as practice tests.
State Testing Tips for Students
- Get enough sleep beforehand
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Stick with regular routines
- Remain positive and have a growth mindset
*We have had some students lately coming to school with fake fingernails. They can be challenging to type with them on in the regular classroom, but we especially ask that they are not worn on testing days. We appreciate your help with this.
Escape from Emoji Island
The 5th grade math students were reviewing skills by trying to escape from Emoji Island. The final clue was tricky, they had to use a cipher to decrypt a word to safely escape the island.
Real World Science Lesson
Sophia and her friends were concerned about the small waterway that was running through the playground after all of the heavy rains. Pea gravel was being washed away under the fence to the hillside which was a safety concern. She had the idea to build a small dam to prevent any more erosion. We love her creative problem solving!
Andrea Rees, 4H Educator, Visited Kindergarten this Week!
Andrea Rees visited Kindergarten this week to candle their incubated chick eggs. They are expected to hatch early next week!
4th Quarter PBIS Event: Duct Tape and a Frozen Treat
Students are working this quarter for 50 PBIS points. The reward is a piece of Duct Tape to participate in Duct Taping me to a wall. While I'm hanging out, LOL, they will enjoy a frozen treat at recess. The culminating event will be when they come back in and pass through the hallway to see me all duct taped!
Butterflies for Seniors
3rd-5th grade students have been busy making butterflies during Art class the last couple weeks. They made 300 butterflies that will be given out to senior citizens during the luncheon held by the district later this month (and they also got to make a butterfly to go home!)
2024-25 Class Lists and Teacher Requests
A lot goes into creating class lists. Teachers meet with the next grade level as well as other staff that work closely with the grade level to make sure the classes are well balanced. Students' academic levels and Social Emotional needs are just a couple of ways that teachers look at to balance the classes. This continues into the summer as we are made aware of new enrollment. For these reasons, we feel it is important to wait till August to share the final lists.
If you have an educational reason for a teacher request, please submit it in writing via email to myself at cgrandstaff@mvcsd.us by May 1st, 2024.
