Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
There is only one week left for February and two weeks till Spring Break. The spring semester is flying by quickly. Students, please keep checking your grades and attendance. Grades for report cards are due March 7th.
Comm Arts Alleyways was rescheduled for this Thursday, February 27th, from 5:30 - 7 pm. BSU's annual Mac & Cheese contest is Friday, February 28th, during our 4th-period lunch. SNHS is hosting a Loteria Night on Friday from 6-8 pm.

Huge congratulations to our amazing students! They’ve just rocked the Digital Cinema SkillsUSA category! A special shoutout to Bailey and Deborah for clinching 3rd place! The rest of our talented crew is gearing up to advance to the state competition at the beginning of April!

VASE
Sieloh Valdez brought home two medals from the incredible Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE)! Her amazing art pieces, "Thorne Crown" and "Key to Creation," truly wowed the judges and showcased her extraordinary talent. Congratulations, Sieloh, on this outstanding achievement! Your artistic skills are truly inspiring!

Comm Arts Banquet
Saturday, March 22nd, is the Comm Arts Banquet. The event is from 6-9 pm. Tickets sell open on February 24th via My SchoolBucks. Remember that this is a Comm Arts-only event. No outside guests are allowed.
Tickets include a dinner, a DJ, incredible decorations, and a dance. We will also have an awards ceremony to recognize some of our students.

Counselors' Corner
Course Requests for 2025-2026
Last week counselors met with all current 9th grade students to discuss their course requests for the 25-26 school year. Students should have shared planning guides and course requests with their families.
At this time course requests for ALL grade levels have been completed. If you have any questions about the courses that have been requested please reach out to your designated school counselor.
Grades
Parents and students - as you are aware, you can view and monitor your students' grades in HAC. There are no Communications Arts courses offered during the summer so please encourage your students to keep up with all their courses.
Students are welcome to ask teachers for passes to attend tutoring during the second half of lunch.
The following are study skills that your students can take advantage of -
Organizing the assignments
Set reminders for tests and project deadlines.
If you have been absent, assignments are posted in Schoology. Please see what you have missed.
Keep open and positive communication with your teachers on grades and assignments.
Create a set time to work on assignments every evening.
Test Taking Tips
Many of our students are preparing for exams such as the SAT this spring. Please take some time to review the Top 10 Test Taking Tips for the Digital SAT from College Board.
For students who are preparing for the SAT you can find tips for practicing and preparing for your upcoming exam here.
College Board has several resources available for students taking a variety of SAT assessments so be sure to take advantage of what is available to you.

SAT Fee Waivers
Students can request a fee waiver directly from College Board. Eligible students can receive SAT fee waiver benefits by logging in to their College Board account and submitting a request. Learn more on the College Board website.

10th and 11th graders can qualify for $500 and $40,000 scholarships from BigFuture®! The scholarships are open to all students, with no GPA, test score, essay, income, or citizenship requirements. Every month, BigFuture will award $500 and $40,000 to students who take steps toward their career and the education they need to reach it.

SAT School Day
On Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, the SAT will be administered to all 11th-grade NISD-enrolled students at high school campuses. Our campus handles registration. All eligible testers in attendance will be expected to participate. There are several practice SATs on Bluebook. Just log into the Bluebook app using your College Board account.

AP Macro Exam
Seniors, the deadline to sign up and pay for your AP macroeconomics exam is March 1st.
If you wish to sign up for an exam, there is an additional $40 late fee. Each exam cost $40. Those with free & reduced, exam costs are $10.

Graduation dates are here. Comm Arts/Taft High School graduation is June 3rd at 9:30 am. For more information, click HERE.

Spring Semester Exam Exemptions
A student enrolled in courses earning high school credit (full-year or semester) may be exempt from the spring semester exam if the following criteria are met:
- For the Spring semester, the student has three or fewer absences, excluding school business absences; (Spring semester begins January 7, 2025)
- The student’s final average for the spring semester is 80 or higher;
- The student’s conduct grade in that class is satisfactory or better; and
- The student is in attendance during the scheduled exam time.
A student who is eligible for exemption may take the exam if desired.
Exam Weight: The two graded quarters of each semester shall weigh 90 percent of the semester grade, and the semester exam shall weigh 10 percent of the semester grade. If a student is exempt from the semester exam, the semester grade shall be calculated using only the two grade quarters of the semester.

HB 114
The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114, requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.

Adobe Access
Adobe Creative Suite Software at Home for Personal Devices
ComArts CTE students, please remember that you can download and install Adobe Creative Suite software onto your personal laptops and computers (not Chromebooks) for FREE using your NISD student login credentials. Use the attached instructions for guidance. Keep in mind that the Adobe software version installed at home will be a newer version than what is available at school. Please get in touch with your Communications teacher (Cleveland, Villarreal, Sabogal, or Flores) if you have questions.
