Text-a-Tip
As part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being and safety of our youth, we want to keep you informed about vital resources and campaigns focused on youth substance use prevention. It is crucial that we all work together to raise awareness and create supportive environments for our children and teens.
Maryville Junior High participates in Text-a-Tip, the easiest way to anonymously report a crime or concern for students. Students can text tips to 274637 using the keyword MJHTIP.
Resources for Youth Substance Use Prevention:
1. Be Aware Blount
o This local initiative works directly with schools, community members, and families to educate them on the risks of substance abuse and misuse. https://beawareblount.org/
2. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
o SAMHSA provides a wide range of prevention materials, resources for parents, and tools to help families talk to teens about substance use. Their website offers free toolkits and guides for effective communication. www.samhsa.gov
3. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for Teens
o NIDA provides science-based facts and information specifically for teens and their parents. Their website includes interactive tools, educational videos, and fact sheets about drugs and the brain, peer pressure, and healthy alternatives. o www.teens.drugabuse.gov
4. Above the Influence
o A national campaign aimed at empowering teens to make healthy decisions about substance use. The website features testimonials, videos, and social media tools to help teens resist pressure to use substances. o www.abovetheinfluence.com
Tips for Parents:
· Start Early: Begin conversations about substance use early and keep the lines of communication open. Your children need to know they can come to you without fear of judgment.
· Be Informed: Understand the risks associated with different substances. Knowledge is your best tool for prevention.
· Be a Positive Role Model: Your behavior influences your child’s choices. Show them how to make healthy, responsible decisions.
· Get Involved: Join community groups, attend local workshops, and stay connected with other parents. Prevention efforts are stronger when we work together.
MJHS Ready Graduate
Maryville City Schools believes that every student deserves to enter the next phase of life with the appropriate tools for that next step. MCS desires to prepare every student to be "Ready" for one of the three "E"s: Enrollment, Employment, or Enlistment. By taking this purposeful and intentional approach, MCS has designed a college and career program that fits the individual needs of every student. Every student will be "Maryville Ready". We invite you to read our latest edition, MJHS Ready Graduate Gazette.
Volunteer Opportunities
Blount VolunTEENS
Blount Memorial Hospital's Summer Blount VolunTEEN Program will be offered to 14–17-year-old students interested in exploring the health field as a future profession. Seniors in high school are ineligible to participate. If you are interested in our program, please complete the application form. Application Deadline: April 14, 2025.
Volunteering at the hospital is a great experience for college applications. If you are considering pursuing a career in health care, being a hospital volunteer in high school is a fantastic way to see if the medical path is for you. You show colleges that you're serious about pursuing a career in medicine by dedicating time to work in a hospital. If you are not interested in pursuing a career in health care, it is a free extracurricular experience and is very rewarding. It will help you develop essential skills for any profession you might pursue, boost your resume, and make connections.
Parent Advisory Council
Cafeteria
Breakfast and Lunch are no longer free. Breakfast is $1.60. Lunch is $3.15.
Free/Reduced meal applications for the 24-25 school year will be ready to submit by July 18. Using our online application process is user-friendly and much faster to process than a paper form; however, you may request a paper application from your student's school. Only one application is needed per family.
If you receive any government assistance such as food stamps, Medicare, etc., you DO NOT need to apply. Current benefits from the previous school year will carry over until September 13; therefore, you have 30 school days to update your student's application.
