Family Newsletter, Winter 2025
A Message from the Executive Director, Tamara Schiern
Dear Families,
I don’t have to tell you that it was a difficult and stressful start to winter this year with the winds, fires and destruction. At the SELPA, our thoughts are with everyone affected, which we know are many. I hope you and your families and your homes remained protected and safe. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the SELPA if we can support you in any way.
You may have heard various talk in the media and on social media regarding the future of the US Department of Education and possibly the status of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). I want to assure you that the IDEA has always had strong bipartisan support in this country and there is absolutely no talk or proposals to threaten it. The State SELPA Association of California (which the WSGV SELPA is part of) continues to advocate strongly in Washington for fully funding IDEA.
On another note, I am pleased to introduce our new partnership with Elevate Educational Solutions (see below). Elevate provides a new approach to supporting parents through the IEP process and any possible conflicts or disputes that may arise.
As we approach spring, wishing everyone blue skies and warm weather ahead.
In Partnership,
Tamara Schiern
Executive Director

Alternative Dispute Resolution Spotlight
The WSGV SELPA is excited to partner with Elevate Educational Solutions, LLC. Elevate provides a unique approach to supporting parents with their IEP process. One element of what they offer that stands out is a consulting service that includes the use of a trained "Parent Partner." The Parent Partner works directly with families to address their concerns, mediate discussion and help develop mutually agreeable solutions. Elevate also provides Resolution Services, conducted by a trained and experienced mediator. Parents may contact Elevate directly for support at: Ph: 909-367-9466 or Email: EESelevate@gmail.com. You can also find further information on the WSGV SELPA website.
In other news, the California Department of Education Office of Special Education has launched a "Constituent's Office" which allows parents and families direct access to state support for issues related to Special Education. Parents may contact this office for questions, guidance or support: You can find more information on their website: CDE Constituent's Office or contact them directly at 800-926-0648, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or SEDCO@cde.ca.gov.

Winter Craft Fair 2024
Once again the participating districts of the WSGV SELPA have made the 2024 Winter Craft Fair hugely successful. We have more vendors than ever and over 200 students participating. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Monrovia Unified School District and Monrovia High School for helping us to transform their beautiful gym into a winter wonderland with hot beverages, a custom photo backdrop from MHS print shop and even a table full of snow!
You can see by the pictures that it was a bustling and festive event. We at the WSGV SELPA are busy beginning to put together another special experience for the students and classes that will participate in 2025. We look forward to seeing everyone there and to new special surprise treats.
