Principal's Post
Crooked Lake Families,
We have had some fun activities happening at Crooked Lake during the month of March. We recently had our "Coin Wars", where student collected coins for their grade level. Students tried to subtract from other grade levels by putting in nickels and dimes, while the quarters and pennies were counted as a positive toward their teams. Our PTO, also had a complimentary movie night on Thursday, March 28 showing the movie Migration. It was great to have families up to school during this recent cold weather. We are so thankful to have such great group of people supporting our school community in so many ways. If you are interested in joining this group please reach out, we would love to have you join us.
Families can view report cards for trimester two by logging into A-HConnect or viewing it on the ParentVUE mobile app. Remember to click on "Documents" to view the report card. (For more information please read below.)
It is hard to believe, but we are preparing for the coming school year. If you would like to fill out a form regarding the placement of your child for the 2024 - 2025 school year, we can send you an input form to fill out. Please contact our office supervisor at Kristie.Terhaar@AHSchools.us. This information is taken into consideration while we make our class lists at the end of this school year.
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be taking their state MCA tests in the coming weeks. Every year these required tests are given in the spring of the year during our testing window. Grade levels will be communicating more specific information as to when the math and reading tests will be given. One way to support this time is by making sure that students are having breakfast, and getting their rest at night. Thank you so much for helping to support our students during this busy time of year.
Take care,
Sam Anderson

Reedy's Report
Hello Crooked Lake Community!
Spring is finally here, well, so is winter. Your guess is as good a mine.
I have talked to several parents about dealing with behaviors at home and wanted to share a few resources that might be helpful. The Child Mind Institute offers a really comprehensive overview of how to deal with big behaviors. This organization has a lot of useful information on how our children work. The Center for Parent Information and Resources is another great general resource with a bunch of easy to understand one pagers. Finally, Fraser is a useful local resource that specializes in helping students with special needs.
Some children demonstrate large behaviors only at home or only at school. Both negatively affect the child and those around them. If you would like any assistance understanding or minimizing big behaviors, please let us know and we will gladly help you make a plan.
Thanks,
Tyler

The state’s Free School Meals program begins in 2023. Families will still need to apply to qualify for more educational benefits. Starting Sept. 5, 2023, every student may receive one breakfast and one lunch at no cost during the school year. The state’s Free School Meals program will cover the cost of one breakfast meal and one lunch meal for every student daily, however the cost of a la carte items, such as milk, other drinks, or extra meal items will not be covered. Students will need to have funds in their meal accounts to purchase any additional food items. If your family needs access to any other educational benefits available to your student, please visit ahschools.us/freereduced to complete an application.
The enrollment window for the 2023 Applications for Educational Benefits begins Aug. 1, 2023. Anoka-Hennepin asks that all families complete an online application to provide additional school funding to support all students in the district. By filling out this application, your school can earn funding and you can save money. Educational benefits include:

Library's Latest
Hello, Crooked Lake Families!
Throughout the month of March, students voted for the Minnesota Youth Reading Awards (MYRA) in their Library class. The MYRA’s objective is to offer yearly "read and vote" awards programs, providing nominee titles that offer opportunities for Minnesota youth to see themselves and others in the pages, make new connections, and engage with and enjoy the world of reading.
All Kindergarten, First, and Second-Grade students voted for their favorite picture book from the Star of the North nominations, which were read to students over the past few months. Third, Fourth, and Fifth-Grade students who read three or more Maud Hart Lovelace chapter book nominations could also vote for their favorite. Thank you to all the students participating in this year’s reading voting opportunity!
And finally, here is our latest and greatest Makerspace donation wish list. Our Makerspace encourages students to design, experiment, build, and invent as they engage in hands-on activities. The supplies we use for Makerspace activities depend on generous donations from our Crooked Lake community. Please take a look at the list of needed supplies and consider donating. All donated supplies can be delivered at Door 1 in the box provided. Thank you so much for your consideration!
Elmer's school glue
Pipe Cleaners
Duct Tape (regular and decorative)
Masking tape (regular and blue/green)
Any crafting supplies you no longer want.

Volunteer News
Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 21st - 27th. I wanted to take a moment to give all the wonderful volunteers a heartfelt thank you. Your dedication of service to our students, teachers and community is invaluable! Whether you're helping students with reading and math support, organizing school events, hanging artwork, chaperoning field trips, working on projects at home, or supporting staff in the workroom you have made a significant impact. I’m incredibly grateful and enjoy working with each of you.
April Volunteer Opportunities
Crooked Lake PTO meeting is Tuesday, April 16th at 6:30 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about upcoming events, network with other parents, share your voice, and get updates from Mr. Anderson. Free childcare for those who attend the meeting!
Please take a moment to view the upcoming volunteer opportunities at Crooked Lake and sign up if you’re available to help.
Crooked Lake carnival is on April 20th. We need the help of 50 - 80 volunteers. Opportunities include helping with games, prize room, ticket and raffle tables.
Carnival is also a great opportunity for high school students. Students can help with Crooked Lake families with games, temporary tattoos, etc.
The carnival planning committee is looking for donations for raffle baskets. Each grade level has been assigned a theme. Proceeds from the raffle benefit Crooked Lake students.
Volunteers will display artwork on tack stripes and/or walls. Volunteers must be comfortable using a step stool. This opportunity may also include taking down old art projects.
Volunteers will monitor the hallways and remind students to be quiet and respectful while out 3rd - 5th graders. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to read a book, work on a quiet project, etc.
Volunteers will straighten and organize the bookshelves. Volunteers must be okay with working around students.
Volunteers will help teachers and support staff with projects such as coping, laminating, stapling, etc.
ALL volunteers are required to complete/update the 2023 - 2024 Crooked Lake Elementary Volunteer Application form and Criminal History Record Release form.
Thank you!

Crooked Lake School Carnival: URGENT NEEDS to help support our carnival
Carnival is Saturday, April 20th, 11 AM - 2 PM
Games, fun, food, PRIZES! School Carnival is an event students look forward to every year. For the PTO to pull this event off, we need our CLS families to come together and give us a hand. Here are some urgent needs:
- Raffle basket donations: Families will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to WIN one of the baskets.
- Kindergarten: Summer Fun Basket
1st Grade: Sports Basket
2nd Grade: Lemonade Stand Kit
3rd Grade: Arts & Crafts
4th Grade: Movie Night
5th Grade: Family Game Night - Signup here to list your donation: Raffle Basket Donations
- In addition, we are looking for community donations to be raffled and/or used for the BINGO prizes. If you know of a business willing to make a tax deductible donation, please contact Melissa Hayek at melissa.hayek@ahschools.us. Donations should have no-strings attached and be completely free for the winner.
- VOLUNTEERS! WIthout volunteer help we would not be able to host this event. Volunteer shifts are split in half so families will still have plenty of time to enjoy the Carnival with their families. Without volunteers, we risk limiting or cancelling the carnival. PLEASE consider donating some of your time to help!
PTO BOARD MEMBERS NEEDED! Our senior PTO board members are graduating out with 3 unfulfilled positions for 2024-2025
New PTO Board Members are needed for next school year to continue to carry on the CLS PTO legacy! We'd love to have you join us. We are regular parents just like you, with kids who attend Crooked Lake, work full-time jobs, and sling our kids some macaroni and cheese real quick before we drive around to baseball, gymnastics, dance, and karate. In between we make time to volunteer with the PTO. We love being a part of the Crooked Lake community, working closely with the staff, being "in the know" on all of the goings on in school, and helping the staff and students have a great time throughout the school year! We need you to step in and help this future board continue to exist. Email us at: CrookedLakePTO@gmail.com for more info.
Next PTO Meeting Date:Tuesday, April 16th 6:30 PM, Crooked Lake Media Center
All CLS parents are encouraged to attend. There is free childcare during the meeting. Hear updates from your principal, Mr. Anderson, our teachers, volunteer service coordinator, and the PTO about what's happening in your school.
5th Grade Party
Before you know it 5th graders will be graduating! 5th Grade Party Planning Committee forming soon. If you are interested in helping plan this event with a few other 5th grade parents, send PTO an email and we'll connect everyone together. It's a year they won't forget!
