SECURE
Our school has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). This month we would like to explain one of the 5 protocols we have in BISD.
SECURE
The Secure Action is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Whether it’s due to violence or criminal activity in the immediate neighborhood, or a dangerous animal on the playground. Secure uses the security of the physical facility to act as protection.
In the event of a SECURE the following protocol is in place on all campuses.
“Get Inside. lock outside doors”
Students are trained to:
• Return to inside of building
• Do business as usual
Adults and staff are trained to:
• Bring everyone indoors
• Lock the outside doors
• Increase situational awareness
• Account for students and adults
• Do business as usual
MOCK STAAR/EOC Testing
BISD participates in all STAAR/EOC subjects and grade-levels. It is important that our testing environment mimic the actual STAAR day's processes so students have a quiet, safe, and productive space. We ask that parents make all efforts to have your child at school on these days so students have this experience and we get the most accurate results possible from the students. We use the results of the MOCK assessment to plan for intervention, tutoring, and test prep/strategies at each campus. Please play close attention to your child's school calendar to prepare for these assessments. You can find STAAR information on our BISD testing page and dates on the 24-25 Testing Calendar.
TELPAS - Information for Parents of Emergent Bilingual Students
TEA designed the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) to assess the progress that limited English proficient (LEP) students. Check out this site for more information and resources to help your child at home.
Who?
Students in grades K–12 who have been identified as an EB, Emergent Bilingual.
What?
TELPAS is an assessment program for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language. The letters in TELPAS stand for the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System.
When?
TELPAS tests are given in the spring. February 17-March 20, 2025
Where?
TELPAS tests are given to students at their own school, in regular classrooms that have been cleared and set up to make it easy to focus on the test. If students have certain special needs and require special accommodations, they may be tested in a different area of the school.
Why?
TELPAS tests are designed to measure the progress that each EB makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.
How?
TELPAS tests are offered in an online format.

Holocaust Remembrance Week
Students in Mrs. Hunt and Coach McCoy's room studied about the "Butterfly Project" for their the Holocaust Remembrance Week project.
Using history’s darkest time to teach students about hope, resilience, and kindness, helping them develop the courage to stand up to injustice in today’s world.
The Butterfly Project’s programming is a gentle approach to teaching a difficult topic. It focuses on the power one person has to make a difference in today’s challenging world. Sharing personal stories from Holocaust Survivors and families, painting ceramic butterflies to honor the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust, and creating art installations as reminders for courage, justice, remembrance, and hope. Why the butterfly? The Butterfly Project pays tribute to the poem, “The Butterfly,” written by a young prisoner at the Terezin concentration camp. Butterflies are beautiful, fragile and resilient and represent transformation and freedom.
Theater
In Mrs. Word's theater class they have been busy doing scarwax, fake burns, wounds, costume challenges and newscasts. This classroom is full of engagement and hands on learning. Follow her on Facebook @ Mrs. Word's Theater Class
Science Fun!
In 5th grade, Mrs. Farr's class, students made sundials. The student is expected to demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours and explain how that causes the day/night cycle and the appearance of the Sun moving across the sky, resulting in changes in shadow positions and shapes.

Stay Healthy
Our schools and community have been hit hard, and many are under the weather—whether it’s a virus, the flu, or just a seasonal bug. Let’s work together to keep our community strong!
Wash hands frequently – Good hand hygiene is a game-changer!
Cover coughs & sneezes – Elbow bumps over handshakes!
Stay home when sick – Rest up & recover while keeping others safe.
We’ve also taken extra steps daily to keep our campuses clean and safe!
Daily Clorox 360 system spraying in every building
Buses sanitized daily for safer transportation
HVAC ionizers in place to reduce airborne germs
Bowie ISD has been working hard to sanitize our schools and buses daily. Let’s all do our part to stay healthy and use the 3 day weekend to rest and recover! #Bowiebuilt
