Community Update
2023-2024 School Year Update #9
April 30, 2024 Update from Dr. Scott Rocco
Dear HTSD Community,
The School Year is Winding Down: Let's Keep Up the Great Work!
We're in the home stretch of the 2023-2024 school year, with graduation just around the corner for the Class of 2024! To ensure all students finish strong, we want to remind families of our three key goals for the year:
Regular School Attendance:
Strong Academic Performance:
Positive Student Behavior & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
As warmer weather arrives, some students might be tempted to come late or miss school altogether. But even a few missed days can add up quickly, hindering learning. Here's why:
Missing just 2 days a month adds up to:
20 missed school days in a year
30 hours lost in Math class
60 hours lost in Reading & Writing
Missing 4 days a month means:
Missing 40 school days a year
Losing 60 hours of Math instruction
Missing out on 120 hours of Reading & Writing
Throughout their K-12 education, missing just 2 days a month can result in missing a full year of school! That's why HTSD has the motto is "Every Day Counts." These examples highlight the importance of regular attendance throughout the school year and throughout a student's entire K-12 experience.
Let's work together to make sure every student finishes the year strong!

USA Food and Nutrition Service - Summer Assistance
Learn how the Summer EBT Program can help you.
Summer EBT is a new federal program to help families buy food for their school-aged children during the summer. Families will receive $120 for each eligible child to buy groceries during the summer. Children who receive Summer EBT benefits can still participate in other summer meal programs. Receiving benefits will not affect children or families’ immigration status.

PTA Food Initiative Update from PTA President, Lisa Schultz
The HTSD PTA Presidents have come together to tackle a problem that touches all of our schools - food insecurity.Regardless of the size of your school, or the ages of your students, we know there are those who could use a boost of nutrition and satisfying food to have at home.
With the help and support of Dr. Rocco and BOE President Dina Thornton, we have come up with a plan to help combat this issue on a district-wide level. Our PTA's will host food drives for non-perishable items such as pasta, canned tomato sauce, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, and canned vegetables. Our hope is that soon we will have enough supplies to open a food pantry.
Once we open, our school counselors and/or nurses will contact us and let us know how many care bags they’d need. These bags will be packed and dropped off to the school - no identifying information will ever be shared with us - only how many packages the school will need.
