What's new with Watkins Middle?
A weekly reflection and preview of all things WMS
WMS updates and reminders
- The WMS Book Fair begins this week (See flier below). The Fair will be open all week, and Wednesday evening will be family night for those wishing to shop after school. Doors will be open 4-7pm.
- The end of the first quarter will be Thursday October 17th. There is no school Friday the 18th as that is a staff development day.
- The Fall sports awards night will be Monday October 21st at 6:00pm. Sports teams start off together in the cafeteria for some quick announcements and snacks, prior to breaking up into individual recognition ceremonies.
- WMS is excited to once again announce that in partnership with OSU Newark and Central Ohio Technical College, we will once again be taking all of our seventh graders on a college visit to OSU Newark. Students will attend on one of four dates: October 22nd/23rd or November 12th/13th. Specific group assignments to come.
- The sixth grade dance will take place Thursday October 24th from 6-8pm. There is no school for students on that Friday the 25th. Entry is $5, and students can bring extra cash for pizza, candy, and drinks. This is a behavior incentive, student behaviors resulting in OSS, ISS, or two hour detentions starting October 1st thru the dance date will result in non attendance to the dance.
- Our second annual 'Pack the Pantry' competition will take place this week. See the flier for themed details. Send in food drive items to help SWL topple the Hornets!
Choir inclusivity
Students in Ms. Savage's concert choir have been developing a student led initiative to recognize every student in their class as a part of upcoming performances.
Theater performances
Students in Introduction to theater have been writing, developing, and now performing their own skits during the first semester. Students work on developing their public speaking and stage presence during the short skits.
Student council
Mrs. Holbrook and Mrs. Heath have worked with student council on an initiative to craft locker decorations for all 1100 plus WMS students.
Hexagonal thinking
Students in Mr. Westbrook's Honors 8 Social studies test their wits utilizing some outside of the box learning strategies as they dive into early US history topics
The power of magnetism
Students in Mrs. Plant's Science 8 class conduct a lap utilizing a variety of magnetic substances to gauge the varying power of magnets.
Thank you parents!
Shout out to all of the parents that came out to the 7th & 8th grade welcome back dance. Almost 300 students had a great time Friday night!
Surviving Middle School for Parents
This weeks "Smart but Scattered" topic is 'Planning'. So many students struggle with making plans, thinking ahead, or demonstrate the capacity to think beyond what occurs right in front of them. This weeks strategies to support your student can be seen in the graphic.
