Where Learning is Personal

From the Principal
Girls basketball is having a great season. Thank you to all the supporters as the gym has been packed. Also, drama, chess, energy and science olympiad continue to work hard and learn a lot.
As we continue to focus on strong routines, I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of getting to school on time each day. A smooth start to the morning helps students feel prepared, engaged, and ready to learn. School starts promptly at 8:20 a.m., with doors opening at 8:15 a.m. On days that "feel" below 10, we allow early entry at 8:05 a.m. to ensure students are warm and safe.
Arriving on time not only helps students academically but also sets them up for success in developing responsibility and good habits. We understand that mornings can be hectic, but a consistent routine can make a big difference in how students start their day. Thank you for your partnership in reinforcing this at home and helping ensure every student gets the best possible start to their school day!
We are mid way through February and blue skies will come again soon.

Primary Team News
Our primary classes have been busy reading and discussing all of the books nominated for the 2025 Monarch award. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) and is designed to encourage Illinois students to read critically and to become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. The award is named in honor of the monarch butterfly, Illinois' state insect. Ms. Cooper has read some of the books during our library checkout time, classroom and student teachers have read them during instructional time, and we've had special guests like Mr. Meech read them to our classes as well! Soon Ms. Cooper will have the primary students vote on which book was their favorite and will submit our results to the statewide poll.
Intermediate Team Ideas
In math, third graders began a chapter on using division strategies. In social studies, the students attended a book tasting to explore biographies as an introduction to our next unit. Students in 3/4 Brach increased their vocabulary knowledge by solving word analogies. They continued their novel study of the book Lemonade Crime and looked at character traits and motivations. Finally, the students read poetry, analyzed poem structure, and practiced determining point of view and theme. 5th graders this week created a timeline of major events and inventions from the industrial revolution based on a text they read. They also learned how to simplify fractions and add fractions with unlike denominators.
