December 2024... News to Know
Indian Landing Elementary
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We hope you had a restful Thanksgiving and are beginning to enjoy the spirit of the holiday season. It is hard to believe that we have reached the start of December... time is flying by! Although the excitement of the season has many looking ahead, we still have three full weeks of school left this year. It will certainly be a busy month and our halls are already buzzing with activity! Please take a moment to check out the calendar of events listed below.
In the Penfield School District we strive to honor and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our students, teachers, and families. As we enter what is traditionally referred to as the holiday season, we want to be sure that we create the space to learn about how different members of our community celebrate what is important to their cultures and histories. Please read further to learn more about how we are learning together and celebrating at Indian Landing.
Many consider this to be a "magical" time of the year as there is a feeling of joy and anticipation in the air. When you have the honor of working with children on a daily basis that feeling is magnified. The staff here at Indian Landing consider ourselves very lucky to have the honor to work with your children each and every day. Thank you for sharing them with us!
On behalf of the entire Indian Landing Elementary School family, we wish you Happy Holidays! We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Marcie Ware

Teaching our students about Sharing and Helping
One of the real life ways that students can learn about sharing and helping is by participating in the annual Holiday Helping Hands food and money collection. From Monday, December 2ndthrough Friday, December 6th there will be baskets and boxes located at the main entrance, library and several other places in the building for students to bring in nonperishable food items and toiletries. These donations will be collected and organized each day by student on our Community Service jobs team.
There will also be a table at the main entrance that will be staffed by Indian Landing students to collect donations of money. Students will collect and count all donations and tally them each day. Online donations can be made through our PTO square site: Holiday Helping Hands donations
At the end of the collection, staff volunteers use a portion of the donated money to shop for holiday gifts. These items are then wrapped by staff members and delivered with food baskets to families in the Indian Landing community. The remaining funds will be used for various needs throughout the year such as winter clothing, scholarships for instruments and fees for clubs. This year our goal is to reach $3,000.
Sharing and Helping… together we can make a BIG difference!

As we enter what is typically referred to as "the holiday season", we want to ensure that we create the space to learn about how different members of our community celebrate what is important to their cultures and histories. While many of our students and staff celebrate Christmas, we need to acknowledge that each of our families may experience the holiday season differently. This may mean different traditions, meals, and/or observance dates based on their unique backgrounds.
We also know that there are many other ways, occasions, and times of the year that our families celebrate. With that in mind, we are encouraging our teachers to provide students and families with an opportunity to share their important cultural celebrations. We know that our students enjoy learning from each other. This type of sharing builds community in our classrooms, but it also helps to disrupt stereotypes and promote empathy and understanding.
Starting on December 2nd, we will be highlighting a holiday or tradition each day on our Morning Show announcements. If you would like to learn along with us, please follow the link for our daily announcement and accompanying visuals. Holidays Around the World
Winter Clothing reminder!
Students will not be allowed outside for recess if they are wearing shorts and it is below 50 degrees.
The Indian Landing (IL) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a partnership of parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators committed to supporting and enhancing the educational and social growth of all students at Indian Landing Elementary School.
We are almost halfway through the school year, but there are many events and activities that still need volunteers and organizers! If you are interested in helping with LEGO Night in January, our Book Fair in March, the Ice Cream Social in April, the Duathlon in May or the Carnival in June, we NEED your help!
Want to learn more? You are welcome to join us at our next meeting! Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. Meetings rotate between in-person in the IL library and virtually via ZOOM. Please check out the PTO website for more information about the latest PTO news. If you aren't able to attend the meeting, please send us an email and let us know how you would like to be involved.

Be a Partner!
Our district's goals continue to focus on developing and supporting the whole student. Our approach to positive behavior support will emphasize the idea of Be a Partner! Students will learn specific expectations focused on these key concepts- Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Safe. Be Kind.
These ideas are a part of what we do each and every day, and our staff will continually be looking for ways to acknowledge students who are respectful, responsible, safe and kind. Students will receive Partner's Pride stickers as recognition from adults in the building and on the bus. Students who receive stickers will be eligible for random prizes such as bracelets and t-shirts. Once a month, we will be recognizing "Partner's Proud Moments". Students selected for this honor can be selected by their teacher for any reason- a positive attitude, responsible behavior, overcoming a difficulty, or meeting a personal goal are just a few examples of reasons why a student may be selected for a Partner's Proud Moment. These students receive an Outstanding Student certificate, as well as a special star pin.
This past month, our "Partner's Proud Moments" were selected by special area teachers and students were recognized for their efforts in art, library, music, and PE. Congrats to all who were recognized in November!
Congrats to our November Partner's Pride students!
