Roots & Wings

On January 5th, we held a parents and caregivers meeting to discuss Children’s Faith Development. A heartfelt thank you to those who were able to attend. We spent time reviewing the Sunday morning schedule, laying the groundwork for a Live Oak UU Children’s Choir, and planning Children’s Social Justice Action Projects for the upcoming year.

We’ve realized that while having classes before the service works well for our youngest, it can be challenging for families with children of varying ages, and we may miss welcoming visitors. To create a more inclusive and manageable morning, we’ve decided to return to holding children’s Faith Development classes after the service, from 11:15 to 12:15. Please remember to sign in and sign out your children in their designated classrooms:

Book Study – Tending the Flame: The Art of Unitarian Universalist Parenting

Raising happy, spiritually grounded children is a challenge. Come join a group of parents in the exploration of ways of answering questions about religion, UU Principles, and including spiritual practices in family life.

Each meeting we’ll use a chapter from the book as a launching pad for discussions ranging from family rituals to the search for truth and meaning and more. Reading the chapter is helpful but definitely not required. We’re primarily about supporting each other and keeping life in perspective.

Did you know that joining our churches' children's choir is a great opportunity for kids? 🎤 They’ll develop musical skills, build confidence through performances and feel more connected to our church family. Plus, they’ll learn about their faith through music and gain valuable life skills like teamwork and cooperation as they sing together. Choir sessions will happen during the Faith Development Hour twice a month on Sundays. Come and join the fun! 🎶

The First Unitarian Church of Dallas is excited to offer an online session of their Biblical Literacy series for all congregations.

Wednesdays, February 12 to March 19, 7-8:30 pm Central on Zoom.

Participants will learn about the structure of the Bible and how it developed over time, explore some of its stories, and reflect on its connection to their own lives and to Unitarian Universalism historically and in our time.

This online offering is Part 1 of 2. Six sessions will be offered in February/March 2025 and the other six sessions will be offered in the Fall. Part 1 will not be a prerequisite for Part 2, but we encourage participants to attend both to get the fullest experience.

Biblical Literacy for Unitarian Universalists is an exploration of the Bible and how we as Unitarian Universalists approach the text. The stories of the Bible are woven into Western culture and society, and our Unitarian Universalist tradition goes back to the Bible and its early interpretation.

It is important for Unitarian Universalists to have knowledge of the Bible and ways of approaching it as one of our Sources to discover truth and meaning within its pages and its history. As we do with all scripture and story, we ask not “is this true?” but rather “what is true about this?”

The UUA’s Tapestry of Faith program “What Moves Us” provides a framework for Unitarian Universalists to engage in theological reflection, not as an intellectual exercise, but as a process of meaning-making that equips one for living in the world as a Unitarian Universalist person of faith.

This program explores the life experiences of both historic and contemporary Unitarian Universalist theologians, highlighting that which caused in them a change of heart, a new direction, new hope, and a deeper understanding of their own liberal faith. These workshops offer you a chance to engage with and bring your personal experiences to bear on the very questions explored by each theologian in turn. No need to sign up, just show up. You are welcome to attend just a few or all of these sessions.
