AUTUMN TERM -7TH NOVEMBER 2024
Message from the Executive Headteacher
It was wonderful to have the children back in school this week after their holiday. They returned to Drama workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday which looked like great fun, I could see that they very much enjoyed themselves as they participated with such enthusiasm.
On Monday and Wednesday of next week we will be hosting the parent consultations for children of HISN, the appointment booking system is still open and will close on Friday. If you have any problems booking an appointment, please contact the admin team. Members of the governing body will be available on both evenings to gather feedback regarding the school so please do introduce yourself.
Thank you to the 2 children who will be representing the school at the Hampton Remembrance parade this Sunday and to Mrs Cook who will walk with them. We will also mark the occasion next Monday during the assembly.
Next week is also Anti Bullying week nationally and we will be marking the week with activities during the week which then culminates in next Friday's Odd Sock Day for the children.
We are approaching a very busy time in school and next week we will send out some Christmas communication, please take a few minutes to read the information regarding school Christmas lunches, parties and shows.
HPPA will be hosting the Fireworks evening tomorrow on the school field. It is always a great display and raises much needed funds for the schools. Thanks to all the volunteers from HPPA who have organised this and I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Have a great weekend when it arrives.

Rights Respecting School's Award
We are becoming a UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School!
Hampton Infant School and Nursery wants to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. As part of this plan we are working towards recognition as a Rights Respecting School, an award given to schools on behalf of UNICEF UK.
UNICEF UK works with schools to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award supports schools to put in place a set of standards based on equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. These values stem from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This week we had an assembly introducing the Rights Respecting School’s award to the children. We spoke about what rights are and how important it is for children to speak out for their rights. This is a whole school award, everyone has has a chance to be part of this amazing journey.
At Hampton Infant School and Nursery pupils will learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. You can find out more about the Award here: unicef.uk/About_RRSA
We really hope that you will support our school on our Rights Respecting journey.

🟨 Nursery
What a super week we have had back to Nursery. It has been lovely to see lots of smiling faces and they all have been super busy bees!
We have all been excited to learn about a new topic this half term: 'Celebrations and People Who Help Us'. This first week, we have been doing lots of celebrating and have been learning about Diwali and how people celebrate. We have loved making Rangoli door hangings, using our funky fingers to glue and stick on colourful gems. We have loved using colour - lots of wonderful patterns on diya lamps and sparkling fireworks using paint. We have learnt that Diwali is the festival of light and families come together to eat lots of yummy food and decorate their houses with beautiful lights.
The children have been so excited to use their new learning in play - we have seen wonderful diwali parties, where children have been sculpting scrumptious looking food using playdough. The children felt so special as they role played, dressing up in special Diwali clothes.
In maths, this week, we have been continuing to celebrate Diwali, by making Rangoli patterns, thinking about the shapes we use when placing our stickers on our door hanging. We learnt that a circle is round and can roll, and a triangle has 3 points. We were all fascinated to see that a rectangle and a square are very similar, but we have had wonderful conversations noticing the difference in the length of their sides. The children have been super spotters too and have loved looking both in the classroom and outside, for our shapes! We have discovered that shapes are all around us - we loved going through the circle hoops as we completed our obstacle course and we noticed that the roofs on houses are triangles.
We cannot wait for next week, when we learn about some Helpful Heroes as we discuss 'People Who Help Us'.
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
This week, you could talk to your child about fireworks. What do they sound like? What shapes do they make? What colours can they see?
🟥 Reception
This week in Reception the children have been learning all about Diwali! We read 'The Best Diwali Ever' and discussed how light is used in other celebrations, like Christmas, Halloween and Bonfire Night. The children enjoyed making rangoli patterns in continuous provision, and some children had a go at making firework paintings using a loo roll 'firework'. They then all had a go at making their own Diya lamp to take home.
In phonics we have introduced the new sounds: 'b', 'c, 'g, and 'h' which the children have practised reading and writing in VC and CVC words. In Maths, we have been consolidating the children's understanding of number within 5. The children have enjoyed helping our class puppets practise their counting skills!
The children also enjoyed a space-themed drama workshop in the hall.

🟦 Year 1
Year 1 children have returned from the October break full of enthusiasm for all the new learning that is to come in this exciting half term leading up to Christmas.
Our new topic this half term is ‘The World Outside Your Window’. We have begun the topic by looking at the different seasons and how the weather, the clothes we wear, and our local environment changes along with each season. We have also been looking at urban and rural settlements, identifying their features and the similarities and differences between the two, and linking these to Hampton and our local environment.
In English, we have been using the text ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon, to inspire our writing. The story is about an alien who has unexpectedly landed on our planet. We have been using our senses to investigate Beegu’s ‘crash’ scene and have been thinking of adjectives to describe the things she may have seen, heard, smelled, touched or tasted after she crash landed on Earth.
This week, we have been continuing with our focus on using various representations and manipulatives to practise our addition skills in maths. We have been using ten frames, bar models and part-whole models to help us work out number problems, write number sentences and represent these in various ways.
This week we have begun studying materials and their properties in science. We began by looking at and feeling different objects and discussing what materials they might be made of and why. In geography, we have been identifying physical and human features as well as looking at similarities and differences between rural and urban settlements. We will be using these to discuss the features of our local area in the coming weeks.
In PE, we have been thinking about how exercise makes us feel as well as developing our rolling skills and how we can accurately roll a ball onto a target. We learnt that bending low helps the ball to roll smoothly and not bounce, and that we need to roll a ball with more power to make it go further. We identified that we can gain more power to roll the ball further by using a higher arm swing and rolling at speed.
This week in art, we have been learning about the artist Paul Klee. We created our very own version of his artwork ‘Burdened Children’ using black fine liner pens, taking them for a ‘walk’ across the paper to create our masterpieces!
🟩 Year 2
Year 2 have had an exciting first week back after the half-term break in year 2. The week began with an engaging outer space drama workshop, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They embarked on an imaginative journey through space to transform an "evil commander" into a friendly character by sprinkling "friendship dust" on the planet. We were also introduced to a mnemonic "My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Noodles" to help us remember the sequence of the planets in our solar system.
This week also included a visit to the library for 2D, where they had a wonderful time exploring a wide selection of books.
In English, we have begun reading The Great Kapok Tree written and illustrated by Lynne Cherry, a story about animals striving to save the Kapok tree from being cut down. Our focus has been on using conjunctions such as if, that, when, and because to express reasons why the tree is so vital to the animals and the rainforest environment.
In Maths, we have been focusing on subtraction strategies that involve crossing a 10. To do this, we first partition the single-digit number to reach the nearest 10. For example, to solve 16 - 8, we would begin by subtracting 6 to reach 10, then partition the 8 into 6 and 2, allowing us to subtract the remaining 2 from 10. We have used number lines and tens frames to support and visualise this concept.
In Science, we have begun our new topic, Animals Including Humans, and we have been discovering whether all adult animals resemble their offspring. The children have enjoyed hands-on sorting and classification activities, matching each animal to its correct offspring and organising them into groups such as mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
Having completed our Great Fire of London topic in History, we have now transitioned to Geography for this half term. We have been studying maps and exploring our location within the United Kingdom. Using atlas’ and digital maps, we identified the countries that make up the UK, along with their capital cities and the surrounding seas, and located these features on the map.
