Exposing God's Gifts
Principal’s Message
October, with its vibrant colours, is one of the most beautiful months of the year. It seems appropriate to thank God at this time for the many blessings we receive. As a Catholic community of learners, we know that every person who we encounter is created in the image and likeness of God and deserving of dignity and respect. At St. Jude, we believe that every student should be provided with the opportunities to develop all the gifts and talents bestowed to them. October falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time, represented by the liturgical color green, a symbol of our faithful hope of reaping the eter-
nal harvest of heaven.
May and October have been named “Marian” months. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary with October 7 designated as the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Praying the Rosary can bring peace and reconciliation.
September was a very busy yet rewarding month as we welcomed back families and welcomed new ones to the St. Jude School Community. We spent time building our school community, establishing routines and writing our essential agreements. We would like to thank you for your patience, understanding, and support during the first month of school. Adjusting to a new school or new teacher can be a trying time for students and parents too! We thank you for working with us to make this transition as smooth as possible. We are thankful and blessed to have a community of parents/guardians that support a learning environment that is rooted in faith, is inclusive, just and respectful.
The Virtue for the month of October is Empathy
God Wants us to Care About Everyone's Feelings
An empathetic person...
listens when people speak
notices when someone is upset and tries to help
can name her / his feelings
can see a situation from another persons point of view
accepts that others have different perspectives
God has given us the ability to form connections with each other—to live together. Empathy helps us to connect and live together in a safe, caring, inclusive community. We understand empathy to mean the ability to identify with and feel other people’s concerns. We believe that in a faith community we are nothing without relationships. Relationships that grow in a spirit of communion– and understanding that we share an identity based on being created in the image and likeness of God and being imbued with one Spirit. An empathetic person believes that we all share one Spirit; that we are many parts of one body because we are all created in the image and likeness of God.
All Saints’ Day & All Souls’ Day
November 1st
All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1st. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. The saints also give us a model of holiness. The charity they lived on Earth lives
on. The witness of their love and sacrifice was not just a one time act in history. Rather, charity is living and continues to have an effect for the good. Therefore, the charity and witness of the saints lives on and affects our lives.
This charity in their lives creates a bond with us, a communion. It enables us to love them, admire them and want to follow their example. It is this, coupled with their continuing intercession, that establishes a powerful bond of love and union with us.
November 2nd
All Souls Day is a holy day set aside for honouring the dead. All Souls Day, which is observed on November 2nd, is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. Catholics believe that through the prayers of the faithful on Earth, the dead are cleansed of their sins so they may enter into heaven.
St. Jude acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Mississauga is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.
Today, the city of Mississauga, is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to work on this land.
Tkaronto (meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing”), is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to work on this land.

St. Jude Catholic School Council
Parents Needed!
Catholic School Councils are a gift to the Catholic school community. These councils are a structure within which parents, staff, students, parish, and Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education (OAPCE) representatives are afforded the opportunity to exercise their own vocation as parents and people of faith.
Catholic School Councils have the opportunity to influence educational and faith formation experiences as children journey towards realizing the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and ultimately, a vocation of Christ-like service in the world beyond school. As a body representing children’s first educators in the faith, the board and school principals can gain valuable insights from Catholic School Councils into the cultivation of truly authentic Catholic education and faith formation experiences for children (i.e. Pastoral plans, sacramental preparation, virtue formation, social justice initiatives, school-based services and community collaborations related to the spiritual/faith life of the school, etc.).

As a publicly funded school board, DPCDSB must follow each of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memoranda (PPM). Recently, the Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memoranda (PPM) No. 128 Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct was updated.
The update and direction to school boards covers two specific areas: cell phone use during the school day and vaping. DPCDSB has updated related existing policies and our Catholic Code of Conduct to align with these Ministry directives, which are in effect as of September 2024.
• Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 must now keep their phones turned off or set to silent mode and out of sight for the school day, unless otherwise allowed by the educator during instructional time for a specific purpose.
• Students in Grades 7 to 12 must store their phones out of view and powered off or set to silent mode during instructional time, unless otherwise explicitly allowed by the educator during instructional time for a specific purpose.
• Students who need to use their phones or other electronic devices for health and medical reasons, e.g., glucose monitoring, medication administration reminders, etc., or to support specific special education needs, may continue to use them during the school day following consultation with school administration.
• Contravention of these Ministry of Education expectations will be addressed according to the procedures outlined within DPCDSB’s Catholic Code of Conduct.
• DPCDSB is not considering the creation of a central phone depository in schools or classrooms. Instead, DPCDSB recommends students keep their devices stored in their backpack or pocket when not in use for educational purposes or for health, medical, or special education needs.
• DPCDSB is also not looking for educators to confiscate phones, rather, school administrators will deploy a progressive discipline approach with those found to be in violation of the outlined restrictions. It is hoped that student behaviours and actions will align with the new rules. Nevertheless, we will be closely monitoring the situation during the first weeks of school, so we have a better idea of the reality in classrooms before we consider additional steps.
• It is recognized that some parents need to communicate with their children during the school day, and in such instances, parents should contact the school office.
• Report cards may include comments on students’ distraction levels in class.
• PPM 128 also includes a strict anti-vaping policy where parents and guardians are to be immediately notified if their children are found vaping on or within 20 metres of school property, and the vapes in a student’s possession will be confiscated. There are immediate consequences for students caught with vapes, vaping, supplying vapes, or in possession of illegal substances as outlined within DPCDSB’s Catholic Code of Conduct.
• The Ministry is also providing school boards with funding to install vape detectors as well as wrap-around supports for students to support learning, address addictive behaviours, as well as dedicated training for teachers and supports for parents on how best to manage this change. Additional information will be shared as available.
Social Media
• PPM 128 identifies the removal of social media sites from school board networks. DPCDSB had previously removed these sites so there was no action required on this component of PPM 128.
PROGRAM/CURRICULUM CHANGES
The Ministry of Education has put into effect the following changes for students entering Grade 9 in the 2024-2025 school year.
FINANCIAL LITERACY GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Students entering Grade 9 in September 2024 are required to pass a financial literacy requirement with a score of 70% as part of their graduation requirements.
The first attempt is taken during the Grade 10 mathematics course. If the student is unsuccessful, they can rewrite the test. If the student remains unsuccessful, credit recovery and other supports will be put into place to obtain completion of this requirement. This requirement is based on cumulative financial literacy learned from Grade 1 through 9.
Catholic Education: "Pilgrims of Hope"
The new school year offers us an opportunity to reflect upon our personal, professional and spiritual growth and to set some new goals.
The theme chosen for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Education Week is:
Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope
L’éducation catholique: Pèlerins d'espoir
Catholic Education Week is held each year in May in our 29 Ontario Catholic school boards. It will run from May 4, 2025 – May 9, 2025.
The Virtue for the month of September is Fatih
To begin the new school year, we’ll focus our attention on the first of our virtues – faith. Faith is the great virtue of believing in God and trusting that God is with us.
A faithful person believes that we are created, guided by and destined to be reunited with God. A faithful person believes that God’s plan for us includes the right to be safe, especially at school.
A Faithful Person...
- Prays regularly and reverently
- Learns from Scripture stories
- Honours people’s God‐given names
- Assumes that there is good in everyone
The beginning of a new school year heralds a wealth of exciting prospects. A blank piece of a
paper is a good analogy for the opportunities that lay ahead—it could become a letter, a graph, a map, a short story, a piece of art work or, a paper air plane. The potential is limited
only by the imagination of the person holding it.
The following passage challenges us to look forward to the exciting opportunities all around us; in our work and in our relationships: “Be aware of the spirit of God at work in the ordinary activities and experiences of our daily life. Spiritual learning continues throughout life and often in unexpected ways. There is inspiration to be found all around us, in the natural world, in the sciences and arts, in our work and friendships, in our sorrows as well as in our joys. Be open to new light from whatever source it may come.” We hope that all students can, this year, take advantage of the inspiration that can be found all around them. The staff of St. Jude Catholic Elementary School look forward to seeing our students and extend a warm welcome to students and their families new to our community.
Cold Weather is approaching
ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Duty to Report
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) is a faith-filled community in which every learner is sacred, created in the image of God. Respect for human dignity is the foundation of equitable and inclusive education. When the safety of a child or youth may be at risk, DPCDSB collaborates with the Peel Children’s Aid Society in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, and Dufferin Child and Family Services in Dufferin County, including Orangeville. These organizations are mandated to help, support, and strengthen families, so children and youth are safe and well.
At times, school staff may become aware of students who are experiencing difficulties. It is not the school’s responsibility to investigate, evaluate or assign blame. It is everyone’s responsibility to help keep all children safe.
It is the law in Ontario that every person within the school board who suspects that a child may be experiencing abuse, neglect or risk of harm must report this directly to the appropriate Children’s Aid Society (Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017, amended 2021). This includes reporting suspected or confirmed cases of human/sex trafficking (Bill 251).
Concerns must be shared with the appropriate Children’s Aid Society so that a support plan is developed with families to ensure the safety of the child. When a report to Children’s Aid is made, school and community-based resources may be offered to help resolve concerns or issues. The DPCDSB also continues to support students who are in the care of the Children’s Aid societies.
It is the sacred trust of DPCDSB to ensure the safety and well-being of all learners, so that every student can thrive.
Medication
On occasion, the school is asked to store and/or give medication to students. Medication of any kind cannot be stored on school property without the proper medical forms on file.
1. A completed form must accompany each request for medication to be stored by the school. It is the prerogative of the Principal to decide whether or not medication will be stored or given out and may establish such conditions as are deemed necessary regarding any specific request.
2. School personnel will not assume responsibility for the administration of any medication.
3. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor the quantity of medication stored by the school.
4. Please let the office know if you require Storage of Medication Forms so they can be forwarded to you.
Anaphylaxis Awareness
As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Jude Catholic School is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to certain foods, such as dairy, peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life-threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. The safety and well-being of all of our students is a priority. In order to ensure the safety and well-being of all pupils, we request that you NOT send any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts and/or tree nuts, including peanut butter substitute products. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of the food restrictions. Please avoid sending food for birthday or special occasions. Should there be additional allergy concerns in specific classrooms; the classroom teacher will share information.
Asthma Awareness
As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Jude continues to remember that “We Share the Air”
There are students in attendance who suffer from life-threatening asthmatic conditions to air pollutants. Exposure even to minimal odours may cause potential life-threatening reactions.
Very common severe chemical triggers are; perfume, cologne, scented products and personal care products (such as hairspray). These products may cause severe reactions for students. The safety and well-being of all of our students is a priority. In order to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, we request that our school community refrain from wearing scented personal products complying with our Scent Free Zone Campaign at school and all school events. Please ensure that all caregivers are also aware of our awareness campaign. If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school staff.
Visitors
At this time, parents/visitors are asked to begin all visits by entering the Main Office. All students leaving the school during the school day will only be released through the front office and we ask that parents please wait at the front door to receive their child safely.
No Dogs on School Property
In The School Playground Please be aware that dogs should not be brought onto school property. We have students with severe allergies. If your dog is escorting you and your child to and from school please make arrangements to meet your child on the sidewalk in front of the school. Special thank you to Mr. Wanes for picking up after the many dogs who are let loose in our schoolyard. after hours.
Emergency Procedure Drills
In accordance with Ministry regulations, we have
conducted three fire drills this fall. As we follow
While we hope that a real fire never occurs, this practice helps prepare students in the event of a real fire.
Appropriate School Attire
Indoor/Outdoor Shoes
Students are asked to ensure that they have a pair of indoor shoes at school. As the weather gets wetter, we ask that children change their footwear when they come inside in an effort to keep our classroom floors clean.
Gym Attire
It is important for students to have appropriate gym attire on their gym days. Running shoes, shorts, sweatpants, warm-up pants, t-shirts, or a hooded sweatshirt are necessary to participate in gym.
Change of Clothes
Children are expected to participate in Daily Physical Activity/Physical Education activities and are reminded to dress for the weather. It is recommended the children of all grades have a change of clothing at school in the event that they get wet.
Inclement Weather Procedures
If school is cancelled due to poor weather conditions, this information will be posted on the Dufferin Peel Board website: dpcdsb.org It may also be announced by the following radio stations.
CFRB CBC CHUM CFTR CKFM CHWO CHIN
This board decision is normally made by 7:00 a.m.
Halloween Costume Considerations
In an effort to create safe, caring and inclusive spaces within our schools, please consider the im-pact costume choices may have on others. Families are encouraged to select costumes that may not be considered offensive to someone’s religion, culture, race, gender, gender expression, ability, heritage, or sexual orientation. Everyone has the freedom to express themselves within reasonable limits. As a caring Catholic community, we must ensure that the costume choices are not offensive to, or mock-ing of, others. Rather than creating a list of inappro-priate costumes, we encourage families discuss with students what is appropriate, what is not ap-propriate, and why. Below are some guidelines to consider before choosing a costume. These ques-tions will help determine what constitutes an offen-sive/disrespectful costume, and applies to “characters” from media, including TV or films. (Adapted from Simon Fraser University).
Does your costume:
• Mock or condescend oppressed people and/or cultures?
• Include face painting for the sole purpose of matching the skin colour of a specific person or people?
• Mock or condescend religions or religious be-liefs? Use sacred objects/clothing of others’ re-ligions/ cultures?
• Caricaturize marginalized groups or persons (historical or current) in a way that may serve to trivialize them?
Confidentiality
We live in an age where most parents/guardians and many students have cell phones and other Personal Electronic Equipment (PEDs) that have photo, recording and videotaping features. The temptation to take photos, video-tape friends, teachers at school and other events is high, especially when parent/family members are unable to attend the event. The accessibility of these advanced technologies make it easy and immediate. The concerns that schools have is how can the school maintain and protect the confidentiality of our students and staff when acts that seem so innocent can potentially have serious/harmful consequences. If photos, video clips are placed on Facebook pages, YouTube and other websites, control is lost on who can view it. In addition, written consent from the participants must be secured to post such information. Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board adheres to strict policies and guidelines on maintaining the confidentiality of students and staff. At the beginning of each year, parents/guardians sign forms granting/disallowing photos of their child(ren) to be taken for school use (i.e., in classrooms, hallway bulletin boards and assembly video presentations). Schools should not post personal information on their websites. Personal information is defined in Section 2 of the MFIPPAct, as 'recorded information about an identifiable individual'. Personal information should only be posted where informed consents have been obtained from all affected individuals or from persons who are legally authorized to consent on their behalf. Informed consent requires that the person consenting understands the exact nature of the information for which consent is sought, the potential consequences of signing the consent form, and be given the right to revoke the consent at any time. As such, we require parents/guardians/students to respect and adhere to Dufferin Peel’s policy on Confidentiality of Student & Staff Information.
Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission (GF 066- Network User Application and Agreement, completed at initial registration). Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” The student agreement GF 337 will need to be signed before students can use the Wi-Fi network.
Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
Ministry of Education Policy/Program Memoranda 128 Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct were updated and came into effect September 2024. The update and direction includes cell phone usage. Cell Phones must now be kept turned off or set to silent mode and be out of sight for the school day. Contravention of the Ministry of Education expectations will be addressed according to the procedures outlined within our Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board’s Catholic Code of Conduct. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. Should parents/guardians need to communicate with their children during the school day, please contact the school office.
