When Fear is not the Enemy
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3:7
Pastor John Bevere has some great things to say about fear. For years people have researched the basis of human fears, fought against fear in life, and campaigned to remove it from our lives. Decades ago, President Roosevelt said famously, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
Scrolling through Amazon, you can locate dozens, if not hundreds, of self-help books designed to eradicate fear from our daily lives. Even a brand of clothing sold items under the “No Fear” label. I suppose those items were intended to embolden the wearer as they faced their challenges in life.
The crusade to denigrate or eliminate fear may seem healthy, prudent, even noble. Some fears are truly destructive, limiting, de-stabilizing. If we fear losing all our money, then we may become misers, clinging to our assets as more valuable than every other relationship in life. If we fear failure, we will likely avoid attempting any new project, adventure, or social interaction. There are many examples of destructive fears.
On the other hand, constructive fears produce beneficial wisdom. The fear of falling many feet down a cliffside will encourage me to walk a safe distance from the edge. The fear of suffering a burn to my skin will encourage me to practice safety when flames are present.
The truth is that not all fear is bad. What if fear – correctly understood – is a virtue? What if the fear of God is the only path to a healthy, worshipful relationship with our Creator and Lord?
Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Or, as the famous 19th Century pastor, Charles Spurgeon, said, “The fear of God is the death of every other [destructive] fear; like a mighty lion, it chases all other fears before it.” Embrace the fear that is a reverent awe of the majesty of God and know true wisdom.
Join us for worship this Sunday at 10:30 am. Pastor Rich will bring us the message, Yet Life Was a Triumph.

Come Check out the Remodeled Nursey & Consider Volunteering
We are happy to announce that our nursery was recently remodeled. Come check it out down in Room 117.
We are also pleased to announce that there is a need to make the Nursery available on Sundays. Families with infants or toddlers have recently attended our services. While we welcome children in our Sanctuary, the parents stepped out into the Lakeview with their little ones.
It would be a blessing to these families if we could provide a place for their baby or toddler to go while the parents attend the worship service. Please consider volunteering in the Nursery one Sunday a month from about 10:00 am -12:00 pm. The service can be live streamed in the Nursery as well.
Contact Leida in the Church office or Mike Starynchak if you can help!
