Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
We welcomed the superintendent and school board members to school on Tuesday this week for their annual whirlwind tour of the school! Superintendent Bunting and team have visited several times this year, but it was our first time hosting the school board. It was so great to see 5th graders learning about the electoral college in advance of their visit to the polls on election day, 3rd graders working on their family narratives (which they will take home in hardcover at the end of 4th grade next year), and 1st graders asking great questions about the gushing fire hydrant outside their window. For the record, it wasn’t a water main break this time! Just the periodic “flushing” of the hydrants to make sure they are all working properly. We’re grateful to the board members for visiting and seeing our students and staff members in action.
This week also included a slew of dynamic experiences, from a Harry Potter party to a visit to the goats at New Village Farm. Stay tuned for some guest student announcers on the next two Mondays, and congratulations to Addie Cimler and Ella Twiggs on winning those. Perhaps the biggest news of the week from our building is that our Front Desk has at long last returned to its home in the main office! Jane and Jen managed all the calls, visitors, and pop-ins that occupy their day from the lobby for more than six months! We’re thrilled that they are now back in a more permanent location. No temporary dividers anymore - you can see the shiny new desk that anchors the space below. We’re grateful to our facilities and IT teams for continuing to “button up” the lingering tasks from the main office renovation project.
Next week is a four-day week for all students. With Halloween coming up on Thursday, many kids are looking forward to staying up a little later and having a sleep-in on Friday. As a reminder, we do not integrate Halloween celebrations into the school day at SCS. Costumes, masks, etc. should stay at home on Thursday. If you are looking for more ways to celebrate Halloween make sure to check out the festivities around town this Sunday - the parade takes place at 2:00, and the PTO is organizing a group of marchers. There is no school on Friday 11/1 in observance of Diwali. Diwali, is a five-day festival symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, and it is celebrated by more than a billion people around the world. If your kids are interested in learning more about Diwali, this article from National Geographic Kids is a helpful starting point. There is also a family-friendly Diwali celebration at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier that is open to all. No matter how you spend your long weekend, we hope that it’s enjoyable!
Take care,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Connecting Youth
This October is Substance Use Prevention Month. It reminds us that everyone plays a vital role in prevention, whether in the home, at school or in the community. Students across the district are engaged in and beyond October in various prevention, education, harm reduction, and wellbeing learning opportunities. And, research shows that as caregivers, you have the strongest influence on your child's decisions about substance use, starting with meaningful connection and conversations.
To support these discussions, Connecting Youth shares these two important prevention resources:
Family Conversation Guide: A practical tool to help you navigate discussions about substance use with your child in an age-appropriate, trust-building way.
National Rx Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, October 26! Dispose of your unused medications—a simple yet powerful step in prevention. Find your nearest collection site here
Remember, our Student Assistant Professionals (SAPs) are here to partner with you, offering additional support and guidance as you build on these relationships with your kids.
Together in prevention!
