Summer Opportunities
May 2023
Questions I often get asked . . .
What can students do to get ready for life after high school?
I get this kind of question a lot. While there is not a single perfect answer, I will give you my two-cents worth on it. Take advantage of learning opportunities - both in and OUT of the classroom.
School: Take challenging classes, explore areas of interest, try hard and be a good student. (Notice, I did not say be the smartest student!)
Outside of school: Go to summer camps, attend leadership camps like NDLS or Girls/Boys State, work part-time, volunteer! These experiences and more will help students learn the skills we don't always teach in school, but they will need for life.
Students are often quick to tell me that these kinds of opportunities "just aren't for them" or they don't think they sound fun. I beg to differ. How would they know without trying them? 🙃 My experience has shown me that those students who participate at a high level are the ones who get second looks when being considered for jobs or scholarships. They don't have to be the best - just willing to try and learn and experience!

Youth OHV Safety Course
North Dakota law requires youth ages 12-15 who do not have a valid driver's license or learner’s permit to take a safety certification class. The certification is needed in order to legally operate OHVs on land other than their parent's, which includes designated OHV trails and ditches.
In order to become certified, the following guidelines must be met:
- Attend a scheduled classroom or hands-on class in your area, or take the online certification course from home.
- Be at least 12 years of age.
- Successfully complete the safety certification test.
NOTE: Children who are 11, but turn 12 within six months of a class date, may take the safety certification test, but will not receive their certification card until they turn 12.
OHV safety certification classroom and hands-on sessions are held February thru October. There is no fee for the course as registration fees are funded by the JakeStar foundation. While the classes are aimed at certifying young riders, anyone who wishes to learn more about OHV safety (such as parents or children under 12) is encouraged to attend; no fee is charged.

Sophomores and Juniors: Are you planning to take the ACT in the next year? Do you feel like you know what to expect?
ZAPPING the ACT is a tried-and-true workshop that delivers results in preparing students for the ACT. Now . . . I will go on record time and again saying that the best strategy for students is to continue to work hard at their schoolwork, take challenging courses, and take advantage of camps/leadership opportunities that come their way. That being said, ZAPPING the ACT prepares students with the test-taking strategies for this test and targets areas where students can "beef up" their knowledge and/or skills to perform their best. Being prepared for the ACT helps take away some of the anxiety that many students feel when they go to take it for the first time.
