Upcoming Math MCAS Supports
The Mathematics MCAS at Salem High School will be held on Tuesday, May 21st and Wednesday, May 22nd. We would like to highlight a few things we are doing to help prepare our scholars for this important state test.
Math Diagnostic:
On Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2, students taking the Math MCAS will be given a short diagnostic in order to see where they are struggling and to determine how best to support them. This diagnostic will be given during your scholar's ELA class and will only be one block, either Monday OR Tuesday. If students are in need of extra time, they will be given that opportunity during crew block on Monday or Tuesday. Scholars will need their chromebooks for this diagnostic, so please make sure they are coming to school with these fully charged. This diagnostic will not be graded.
.
Google Classroom: 72sob6m
The Mathematics Department has created a MCAS Review Google Classroom for students to join. Please encourage your scholar to join for helpful videos and practice problems!
For scholars in Algebra 2, it is highly recommended that you join Google Classroom and complete all work under the “Statistics and Probability” section. It is especially important you get a review of this material since you most likely haven’t seen it since middle school.
April Vacation:
Using the diagnostic that will be given April 1-2, we will target students who are in need of extra math support and invite them to attend extra practice sessions over April Vacation. More information will be available soon regarding this April program. If you have questions or would like for your scholar to be enrolled in this program, please reach out to Glenn Burns at gburns@salemk12.org.
Review Sessions:
Session #1: We will be holding one after school session on Wednesday, May 15th. This is an early release day and scholars will be invited to stay from 12:45-2:45 for extra review/practice/help with the MCAS.
Session #2: We will be holding a Saturday session on Saturday, May 18th, 9-12pm. This will most likely be set up in “station” format by topic so that scholars can visit the stations they need help with the most.
Food will be provided at both review sessions. More information to come as the dates get closer.
SHS Extra Support Opportunities:
For students who need help with math, please be aware of the following supports that are offered at Salem High School: Extra Support Opportunities

Colin Bowker, Class of 2024 Eagle Scout Project
Donate: https://www.gofundme.com/f/benjamin-peirce-and-stephen-abot-memorial
Colin Bowker, a lifelong resident of Salem and a member of Scout Troop 24 for seven years. For his Eagle Scout Project, he wants to honor two local heroes of the American Revolution by installing a new memorial in a prominent location. This will be at the rotary of Church St. and Saint Peter's St. opposite a Salem History placard in the crosswalk.
Captain Benjamin Peirce was the only minuteman from Salem to die while engaged at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. His memorial and bronze plaque are currently low and obscure, and do not reflect his sacrifice for our freedom.
Major General Stephen Abbot was a Salem merchant who became the leader of the scouts attached to General Washington’s headquarters. After the war he was appointed Major General of the Second Division, Massachusetts Militia. Though he played a vital role in several campaigns and battles, he has no memorial in his hometown.
With the support of the Salem Veterans Council, he proposes to relocate the existing memorial of Benjamin Peirce from the rotary of Church and St. Peter’s Streets to a nearby space owned by the City of Salem. I also propose to create a new memorial for Major General Stephen Abbot and place it in the center island next to the pathway that bisects the rotary. This way, both men will receive the recognition and respect they deserve from the community they served.

Salem Hosts Gathering for Second Chance Cars Organization
Salem High School Automotive will be working with Second Chance Cars to refurbish used vehicles. This is an incredible opportunity for Salem High School Automotive students to give back to our community.
Second Chance Cars is a Massachusetts 501c3 corporation that provides refurbished, affordable used cars to Eastern Massachusetts’ low-income veterans and returning citizens. Our cars allow their new owners a chance to obtain living-wage jobs and the ability to achieve their full potential.
We work closely with some of the best social services agencies and nonprofits to help us select “car-ready” candidates. We also work with a network of vocational schools and automotive specialists who refurbish our donated vehicles professionally and affordably.
We match used vehicles with someone who really needs one, and give the donors 100% of their car’s retail value as a tax deduction—the highest car tax deduction in Massachusetts. Learn more about us and our mission.

In School SAT Day is on APRIL 23, 2024
Isn’t this just the same test but online?
No, College Board didn't just take the paper and pencil test and put it on the computer. We took the opportunity to make the SAT a far better test experience for you.
What’s staying the same?
Still measuring the knowledge and skills that matter most for college and career.
Still scoring the test on a 1600-point scale.
Still administering the test in schools or test centers with a proctor present (not at home). Test centers will continue to be open to all students, not just those enrolled in that school.
Still offering access to free, world-class practice resources.
Still supporting all students, including those who need accommodations on test day.
What’s changing?
You’ll take the SAT on a laptop or tablet.
You’ll take a shorter test, about 2 hours instead of 3. Find out how adaptive testing makes this possible.
You’ll have shorter reading passages instead of a few long texts.
You’ll be allowed to use your calculator on the entire Math section and there’s a calculator built right into Bluebook™, the digital testing application.
How do I practice?
Find everything you need to start practicing and preparing for the digital SAT here.
Have more questions? We’ve got answers!
Learn more about the digital SAT here.
