Message from Principal Downey
What is the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and how will it help your child?
The act aims to improve literacy outcomes for students in Virginia, including our students at Chris Yung Elementary. Key Components of the VLA include:
- Core Literacy Instruction: All students from kindergarten to grade five will receive instruction based on scientifically-based reading research and evidence-based literacy practices.
- Supplemental Instruction: Students from kindergarten through grade eight who do not meet literacy benchmarks will receive additional support through individualized reading plans.
- Teacher Training: Teachers are receiving training in evidence-based literacy instruction and are using approved literacy screeners to measure student progress.
- Parental Involvement: Our Chris Yung families have access to online resources to support literacy at home. You can find resources and support at this link.
- Reading Specialists: Specialists will oversee interventions for students not meeting benchmarks and monitor their progress.
- Division Literacy Plans: Prince William County Schools has developed a literacy plan, ensuring the use of evidence-based curricula, and providing professional development for educators. Read more about the PWCS division literacy plan.
Join us at our first Family Engagement Event of the year - Family Reading Night will be held on October 17th at 6PM. Come and learn more about the Virginia Literacy Act and enjoy some great reading and writing activities with your child!
