We canât believe it's March! Before we take off for Spring break our Kindergarteners have so many new things to learn. In reading students will continue to learn about what makes the USA special. Such as baseball, Martin Luther King Jr, and the 4th of July. In Math, students are continuing to add and subtract numbers 1-10 using manipulatives and # stories. While in Science we will study plant needs, plant parts and the life cycle of a plant. We can't wait to get started as we head towards the end of the year.

Our second grade readers will still be learning about nonfiction text features and cause and effect reading strategies. We are working hard and improving on our phonics skills and vocabulary skills every day! Our next writing assignment will be a Procedural Writing (How To....) along with grammar concepts such as prefixes and suffixes. Economies will be the focus of Social Studies and plant survival for Science. Our mathematicians will finish up foundations on multiplication, division, and area and dive into problem solving with length, money, and data.
We are looking forward to our field trip on April 23rd. More information on the trip will be sent to you via paper and Parent Square soon! Thank you for checking your child's folder every night and having them complete their phonics and math homework. Please reach out to your child's teacher for any questions or concerns you may have about their grades, behavior, or how you can help them at home.

Nurse News by Kate Versluis
March is recognized as National Nutrition Month. Here are some tips you can follow when packing your childâs lunch for school (or when eating at home):
1. GO BEYOND SANDWICHES! Meats rolled up or cut into squares, cheese slices and whole-wheat crackers; cold slices of pizza; chicken legs.
2. AVOID EMPTY CALORIES! Pack water or 100% juice. Avoid items with âsugarâ or âhigh fructose corn syrupâ as a top ingredient. Give whole-wheat crackers instead of potato chips. Give fresh fruits and veggies instead of fruit snacks or fruit cups packed in syrup.
3. PROVIDE A VARIETY OF FOODS! Pack fruits and vegetables every day. Add dairy foods such as yogurt or cheese. Protein-rich foods include peanut butter, hard-boiled eggs, tuna, and cheese. Mix these with some whole-grain carbohydrates for balanced energy!
Letâs work together to help our kids eat healthy!

We are continuing to Choose Love at HES! Choose Love for Schools emphasizes the simple, universal teachings of courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion in action. February was Choose Love Awareness Month. Our students had a lot of fun participating in the daily challenges, which gave them the opportunity to practice ALL four components of the Choose Love Formula. Scarlett Lewis, founder of the Choose Love Movement, visited HES during Choose Love Awareness Month as well. We held a schoolwide assembly to share with her â100 Ways to Choose Loveâ since it was also the 100th day of school. HES teamed up with HIS to host a Choose Love Family Night, which was a HUGE success!! Scarlett gave a parent presentation followed by lots of fun practicing the components of the Choose Love Formula at various activity booths. A special THANK YOU to all who attended this special event, as well as the local churches who participated in Choose Love Family Night by sponsoring âgrab and goâ snacks and drinks throughout the evening. We are so grateful for a community who Chooses Love!
Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as FORGIVENESS Choose Love Champions by their teachers! These students visited the Wesley House here in Hillsboro to spread some love and cheer to their residents. We are proud of you!!
