March Newsletter
Principal's Message
Sumner Academy Students and Families,
I trust all is well as we return from our well-deserved spring break. We have lots of important information in our March Newsletter as we move forward into the latter part of our school year.
Firstly, I would like to remind everyone that we will begin our state testing (KAP) immediately following spring break. These assessments will involve our 8th, 10th, and 11th grade students across multiple classes. It's a critical time for our students, and we appreciate your support in preparing them for these assessments. We are thrilled that we have successfully completed ACT testing for our Juniors. The dedication and hard work of our students have been truly commendable, and we eagerly await the results.
In response to the school closure days, the district has decided to extend the student schedule by an additional 20 minutes starting Monday, March 18th. The school day will now begin 15 minutes earlier at 7:50 AM and end 5 minutes later at 3:10 PM, with Wednesdays ending at 1:10 PM. Morning bussing schedules will remain unchanged, though please anticipate a 5-minute delay for afternoon routes. We understand that adjustments may take time, so flexibility regarding tardiness will be practiced during the week of March 18th. However, starting March 25th, it is imperative that students are in class by 7:50 AM to avoid being marked tardy. Please ensure your child arrives on time, keeping in mind our morning entry procedures.
With the arrival of warmer weather, I also want to remind students and parents about our dress code. Clothing that references violence, drugs, or alcohol is not permissible, and all attire must be school-appropriate, including the requirement for straps on tops and coverage of midriffs and undergarments.
I understand the difficulties some students may have in regard to parking as we are not able to park at St. Peters Church at this time. I hope this is only temporary and we will have that as a resource soon, I will keep you updated. The Forest Grove Baptist Church has opened their parking lot for additional parking. It is available at the corner of Oakland and 9th.
Thank you for your continuous support and cooperation. Together, we can make the rest of this school year a successful and enriching experience for our students.
Sincerely,
Rick Malone

A'Jah is undoubtedly deserving of this recognition for her outstanding contributions to our learning community in my class and I'm sure to the school as a whole as well.
Staff of the Month
Cindy Leighton
I am nominating this teacher because she is really effective and mindful of our work time. She's really easy and fun to get along with and she's a great vibe overall. She also likes to make us watch videos on the topics that we are learning and during so she pays attention to when we're not paying attention then reminds us and tells us to give our undivided attention. It's been a great year having her as a teacher. She makes learning history much more interesting. She is the reason why I look forward to having even days and 4th hour. She always looks enthusiastic when she is going to teach us about a new person. I appreciate her hard work and dedication she has towards her career. Thank you for teaching many generations about our history. Ms.Leighton always has a positive outlook and wants the best for every student she teaches. She always tries new ways to teach each class. One day we cleaned the track because we were ahead (I think) and we just started doing Managebac. PPS 1 will forever have a special place in my heart for looking at the world differently and to be non judgemental to cultures or viewpoints I do not understand.
Camp Fury
Our 2024 Camp Fury will take place from June 10–14th. New this year: this camp will be a day camp running every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Campers can crash in their own beds at night to get ready for days of putting out fires, rappelling off buildings, climbing ladders, learning self-defense and de-escalation skills, and so much more.
Our Camp Fury participants will train alongside police and fire for an intense week of getting behind-the-scenes looks at the lives of first responders. This program is taught by an incredible group of female first responders in police, fire, EMS, and CSI.
This program is available for girls who are completing grades 9th-12th grade this spring. Follow the link to register today!
