Principals Message
We had a great first week of school to begin 2025. The number of Tardies, or students out of class, fell drastically this week. This makes our school safer and means more of you are in class learning. It is great to see because we care about you and your education and want you in class. There was a lot of excitement for students and staff. Thank you for making the start of 2025 a great experience. We know it will be a great year.
Remember to sign up for a Winter Conference. Sign-up for CHS Winter Conferences is open now. CHS Winter conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, from 3:30-7:30 PM and Thursday, January 30th, 2025, from 7:30 AM-7:30 PM. Our goal is for every family to attend conferences with the teachers you want to meet with about your student's progress. See the information below in the Upcoming Events and click the link --> https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Centennial_High_School_1 to sign up for conference time today.
Remember, "Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle" at CHS!

School Board Recognition Month - Thank You, CSD School Board!
It's School Board Recognition Month! Each January, Oregon’s 197 K-12 school districts come together to celebrate and honor our school board members for their service to students, families, and the community. These elected volunteers give their personal time and energy to the important task of overseeing school budgets, policies, and other critical management tasks.
We are so grateful for the efforts of our Centennial School District Board of Directors: Chair Rose Solowski, Vice Chair Pam Shields, David Linn, Ronald "Jess" Hardin, Claudia Andrews, Melissa Standley, and Will Mohring. Please join us this month in thanking these amazing individuals for their dedication to our Centennial schools!

Happy New Year! The attendance team hopes this new year brings you prosperity and progress in your studies and goals. We are looking forward to sharing our new rewards for attendance. We are ironing out some of the kinks and will be sharing these as soon as possible. In the meantime, keep improving your attendance since being present in school is an excellent start towards academic success.
Also, look for beneficial ways to get involved with the school and other community organizations. We are working on ways to showcase the uniquely entrepreneurial talents in our school community. More info is coming soon.
Sincerely,
Maurel Merette - CHS Dean of Students and The CHS Attendance Team
Winter Illness Reminders from CHS Attendance Team
This is the time of year when illnesses such as colds, flu, and fevers can take a toll on school attendance. Absences related to illness, even if they are excused, break the routine of daily attendance that contributes to students feeling connected and engaged in learning.
Please consider the following reminders to keep your children healthy and in school this winter:
Remind children to wash their hands before and after eating, after using the restroom, or after coughing or sneezing.
Encourage healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, drinking fluids and getting exercise.
Refer to the Symptom-Based Exclusion Chart for guidance on when to keep your child home from school due to illness, or call our school office for assistance.
If your child needs medical attention, no-cost health services are available at the Multnomah County Student Health Centers for all youth ages 5-18. To make an appointment at the Centennial High School Student Health Center, please call 503-988-5488. For more information about Student Health Center services or locations, click here.
Let us know how we can help you. If you’re having trouble or need additional resources, please call our school office.

It’s a Great Day to Be an Eagle!! Recap -11/10/24
GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
To start winter break, our girls headed to Reynolds, where they blew out both the Reynolds JV and Varsity teams. An article was written in the Gresham Outlook after that game that can be found here: https://www.theoutlookonline.com/newsletter/centennial-girls-basketball-we-belong-back-at-varsity/article_0e6a9872-bf5d-11ef-8533-23c71670e04e.html
Both girls played in the Portland Holiday Classic, with our JV team undefeated against Aloha, McDaniel, and Roosevelt. Nayenaye Garrett, as the starting point guard, was our high point scorer, earning a double-double in two games. Grace Chienku, Nylijah Robinson, and Marely Lopez all contributed to the wins in the tournament through points and leading in rebounds. The team, led by the senior leadership of Lashmey Kitthisane and Hailey Hardin, is proving to be more competitive than in years past, and everyone is excited about our future!
BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM
The Eagles ended Winter break with a win over 6A South Salem, where it was all Eagles from Start to finish as the Eagles led from Tip to the final Buzzer, walking away with the 78-73 Win. With the start of 2025, the Eagles started League play against two top 10 teams in Canby and the 2023 state runner-up Wilsonville. Although the Eagles dropped both games, they proved to be an opponent that was not to be overlooked.
In the Wilsonville game, the Eagles jumped all over the Wildcats early, jumping to an early lead. Still, Wilsonville, with five players over 6’6”, including a 6' 8” freshman, gave the Eagles trouble inside, pulling away for the win. Wilsonville's coach quickly shared that the game was much closer than the score and that teams should look out for the Eagles! The Eagles will travel next week to LaSalle for another Top Ten League matchup.
EAGLE SWIM TEAM
Our Centennial Swimming Eagles hosted the La Salle Falcons on Thursday night. Although the Falcons won both swim meets, our Eagles had some fantastic performances and best times:
Congratulations to the following swimmers for winning their events:
Ari Schrenk, 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke
Miles Moir, 200 Individual Medley and 100 Butterfly
Payton Brookfield, 100 Butterfly
Layla Torres, 100 Breaststroke
The boys finished the meet by winning the 400 Freestyle relay with Miles Moir, Jaedon Head, Ari Schrenk, and Kody Chen.
Great job, Eagles, and good luck against Hood River next week.
WRESTLING TEAM
The Eagles Wrestling teams traveled to Hood River for a four-team double dual. The Eagles wrestled against Milwaukie and Parkrose. Since we see the Eagles of Hood River later this season at home. The Surprise of the evening was the perfect night the Eagle boys had against Milwaukie, winning 84-0.

Message from CHS Counselors - Dougy Center - Grief Support
Dougy Center - Grief Support. Reminders:
Inclement Weather - Be Ready! Reminder
With the colder winter months just around the corner, we want to remind families and staff of the procedures used by our District when inclement weather occurs.
The Centennial School District maintains a preparedness plan for the monitoring of inclement weather and potential weather-related impacts on school operations, including our facilities and road safety for transportation. As these impacts are evaluated, there may be changes to the school schedule, such as a school closure, a delayed start to the school day, or an early dismissal. Snow routes for our school buses will also be used when road conditions are deemed unsafe by our Transportation Department staff.
When inclement weather causes changes such as these, we will notify our staff and families using multiple methods:
- ParentSquare messaging (text, email, app notifications, and/or voicemail). If you need assistance registering for the ParentSquare app, please contact your school office.
- Centennial School District website: www.csd28j.org
- Social Media (Facebook: CentennialSD28j / Instagram: centennial_schools)
- Flash Alert notifies local news stations. Individuals can subscribe to receive FlashAlert updates for Centennial School District here: http://www.flashalert.net/id/centennialsd
Parents/caregivers, if your email address or phone number has changed in the last year, please contact your school office to ensure we have your up-to-date contact information.
