Eatonville School District
A Message From Your Superintendent
Dear Eatonville Students, Staff, Families and Community Members,
As we reach the end of another successful school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on our collective achievements and express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone in our Eatonville School District community. This year has been a testament to what we can accomplish together, and I am proud to share several key highlights.
Completion of the Strategic Plan
Our strategic plan, which will guide our educational decisions over the next five years, has been completed thanks to the tireless efforts and invaluable input of our staff members, community members, students, and parents. This comprehensive plan truly reflects the values and priorities of our Eatonville School District family. Your dedication ensures that our strategic direction aligns with the needs and aspirations of our entire community, and I am deeply grateful for your contributions.
Successful Passage of School Funding Measures
I am thrilled to report that, with your overwhelming support, we have successfully passed crucial school funding measures. These measures will provide the imperative funding necessary to continue offering valuable educational programs and opportunities for all Eatonville students, both during the school day and in extracurricular activities. Your trust in our vision and commitment to our students' futures is profoundly appreciated.
Building Fruitful Partnerships
This year, we have strengthened our partnerships with local businesses, community leaders, community service organizations, and local and regional government. We have also received generous support from Washington State through grants. These collaborations have created a robust network that supports our schools and enhances the educational experience of our students. These partnerships have brought additional resources and opportunities, preparing our students for future success both academically and in the workforce. The dedication of our community leaders and the support from various organizations have been instrumental in building a stronger educational environment for our students.
Addressing Student Transportation Challenges
Transportation is a vital aspect of our students' daily lives, and we faced significant challenges in ensuring safe and reliable transportation for all. Through the collaborative efforts of our transportation department, staff, and community members, we have successfully addressed and resolved many of these issues. Your patience, feedback, and support have been instrumental in overcoming these challenges.
Engaging Community Forums
We have held several community forums this year to gather feedback and address key issues such as student transportation, school funding measures, civility, and the implementation of Capital Project facility priorities. The active participation and valuable insights provided by parents, staff, and community members during these forums have been crucial in shaping our policies and initiatives. Your engagement ensures that we continue to move forward in a manner that best serves our students and community.
Recent Demonstration of Heart Challenge
The Kids Heart Challenge event was a tremendous success across participating schools, showcasing the commitment of our students to support children with heart issues and challenges. With a total of 252 students registered online, numerous families engaged in learning Hands-Only CPR, and a combined fundraising effort resulting in $14,280 raised, this initiative made a significant impact in promoting heart health and saving lives. Eatonville School District notably set a new record, being the first district in all of Western Washington to have all elementary schools participate in the challenge.
WES: 55 students registered online, 8 families learned Hands-Only CPR, and $3,643 was raised to help save lives!
EES: 133 students registered online, 29 families learned Hands-Only CPR, and $7,114 was raised to help save lives, setting a new record at Eatonville Elementary!
CCA: 64 students registered online, 24 families learned Hands-Only CPR, and $3,523 was raised to help save lives!
Our students’ dedication to this cause is truly inspiring, and their efforts have made a tangible difference in the lives of many children and families.
Looking Ahead
As we look forward to the next school year, I am excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. We remain committed to fostering an environment where every student is known, valued, and supported. With the continued support of our dedicated staff, engaged parents, and supportive community, I am confident that we will achieve even greater success in the years to come.
Thank you once again for your unwavering support and commitment to the Eatonville School District. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students.
Wishing you a wonderful summer!
Warm regards,
Jay Brower

Finishing Strong
Our teachers make the end of the school year memorable for students by focusing on activities that reinforce the connections between them.
As we approach the end of the school year, we understand that this time can bring about a mix of emotions for both students and parents. Whether it's feelings of joy, relief, sadness, or even fear about the upcoming transition to summer, every emotion is valid and important. Together, we can support each other in navigating this time in a positive way.
Collaboration
Some students/classes will participate in field trips, complete final assignments, or field day activities. Students will finalize work; have opportunities to work with a partner or in teams during the last few weeks of learning. This collaborative effort not only engages students but also enhances their social and emotional skills as they work together towards a common goal.
Some classes will kick off collaborative activities and short projects during the second-to-last week of school and showcase student work and provide closure during the final week. Students will have the opportunity to participate in class games and in some cases share them with others in the school community.
Summer Time Learning
During the Summer months, parents can support their child by visiting the library to check out books and reading everyday. Another great activity to do with your child is to create a Which One Doesn’t Belong? activity that can be used for any topic. Traditionally associated with math, these puzzles with no wrong answer are invaluable for igniting thinking and creating great conversation and connections.
In our efforts to finish the school year strong, teachers focus on activities that strengthen the bonds between students and express gratitude for the support and partnership from families. Your involvement and support throughout the year have been invaluable.
Thank you for being an essential part of our school community.
District Adopts New Elementary English Language Arts Curriculum
More than 15 teachers, administrators, school board members, parents, have come together to follow board policy and to adopt a new English Language Arts Curriculum K-5. Our Core Leaders committee led the way to the selection of the next K-5 reading curriculum.
Core Instructional Leaders: Mandalyn Ames, Rachel Hight, Robyn Johnson, Jen Olsen, Shay Painter and Christian Tonkinson, began this work in November 2023.This team set out to improve literacy outcomes for students, by identifying high quality teaching materials to implement for the 2024-25 school year.
The team presented to the Instructional Materials Committee at the beginning of May. The team presented with enthusiasm and clarity regarding the Curriculum Associates materials named: Magnetic Foundations/Magnetic Reading. The Instructional Materials committee made a recommendation to the school board for approval at the May 23, 2024 school Board meeting. The school board approved the Core materials for core reading instruction.
This team spent countless hours evaluating 5 different Comprehensive ELA curriculum materials. Materials were narrowed to two top contenders. These materials were then taught in 17 classrooms reaching all grade levels. Our Pilot teacher team included: Kerri Gray, Jade Engleback, Heidi Holland, Angie Gendreau, Jenny Clemensen, Hayley Hancock, Susie Maida, Jen Root, Amy Sniezak, Cari Antonson, Caitlin Brinkman, Elizabeth Crayle, Michele Menegon and the Core Leaders.
In light of the new strategic plan work, we want the selection process to be transparent to our staff, families, and community. It was important that we heard as many voices as possible, the team was thoughtful in the approach.
The emphasis of the Core Leaders Team was to complete a rigorous evaluation of each program’s evidence-based track record and included a focus on attention to details, such as standards alignment, and foundational skills.
Our fall implementation will include August professional Learning for our teachers and administrators prior to the start of the 2024-25 school year.
The move to a new reading curriculum is gaining momentum at a highly relevant time for change. There’s no question that, overall, reading scores across the district are off the mark when it comes to ensuring that all of our students are learning at their highest level. The results reinforce the importance of instructional practices, especially as they impact all student groups and varied learner needs.
It is important to note the significance of third-grade reading skills to the future academic success of students throughout their K-12 education. Third grade is when comprehension becomes essential to understanding and mastering content in all subject areas. Reading proficiently by third grade is a crucial marker in a child’s educational development. This is why the selection process of a new reading curriculum for our elementary school students was founded on research and quality materials review.
We appreciate the community members, staff and parents who are seated on the Instructional Materials Committee to oversee the process of materials review. We have many talented and knowledgeable educators who care about our students.

Extraordinary Achievement for EHS's Dylan Norman
Let's give him a huge round of applause for being named this year's skill player winner at the 48th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony hosted by the Paul Wallrof Chapter Tacoma-Pierce County.
Outshining talented athletes from across Tacoma Pierce County, Dylan's dedication, hard work and exceptional skills on the football field have earned him this prestigious award. Joining the ranks of past winners from Eatonville, Dylan continues the legacy of excellence set by remarkable individuals before him. From Robert Hill to Mark Miller, Lucas Hatton to Herman Hardtke and Justin Erikson, Dylan now stands among them, representing Eatonville with pride.
But Dylan's accomplishment extends beyond the field – it's a testament to his commitment to excellence both academically and athletically. His victory at the National Football Foundation event further cements his status as a standout scholar-athlete. Out of fierce competition, Dylan emerged victorious, securing one of the two top scholarships!
A heartfelt thank you to Rex Norris for recognizing Dylan's exceptional talent and character. Congratulations, Dylan Norman – you've made us all incredibly proud!

The Power of Sleep: Vital for Health and Happiness
Sleep is not just a pause in our day; it's a crucial pillar of our well-being. Beyond feeling rested, quality sleep is essential for our physical and mental health.
Physiologically, sleep is our body's repair time, crucial for immune strength and metabolic balance. Mentally, it enhances cognition, memory, and emotional resilience. Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, leads to mood swings, decreased focus, and increased stress.
On a broader scale, insufficient sleep affects society's productivity and health, contributing to accidents, chronic diseases, and economic costs.
Prioritizing sleep means establishing healthy habits, like a consistent sleep schedule and a conducive environment. It's time to rethink the culture of sacrificing sleep for productivity and embrace its value for a happier, healthier life.

Teacher of the Year Nominations
Nominations are open now through June 14.
The Ohop Grange will be giving a "Teacher of the Year" award based on nominations from individual students. For children in preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade, we understand that they may need some parent assistance, but it needs to be the children’s ideas about what makes a teacher special in their view.
Nominations should be turned into the school office where the student attends. The Grange Committee always enjoys reading the many ideas that students express in the nominations.
