The LCPS Letter
Think Fast with Superintendent Spence
For his first Think Fast video of the 2024/25 school year, Superintendent Spence is joined by Renee Dawson, director of the Division of Family and Community Engagement, and Sarah Boies, supervisor, LCPS Outreach Programs. We look forward to working with this new division to make LCPS a model of family and community engagement. Remember to submit questions for the Superintendent for the next Think Fast video. Welcome back to school!
Back-to-School Webinar with Superintendent Spence
Join Dr. Aaron Spence, LCPS Superintendent, and other LCPS leaders for a one-hour virtual Back-to-School Question and Answer Session on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. This virtual session will be streamed on the LCPS website and broadcast on LCPS TV, Verizon FIOS Channel 43 and Comcast Cable Channel 18.
Going back to school can be a busy time. You and your family may have questions about resources available for students, how to access information, or how to learn more about classes, counseling, programs and activities. Plan to attend this webinar to have some of your Back-to-School questions answered!
Students, staff, parents/guardians, and community members should submit questions in advance. Please submit your questions by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.
At the end of July, a panel of students joined Superintendent Aaron Spence for the final session of Lead Loudoun, a two-day conference for school-based administrators and central office staff. The students spoke about how their school community fosters a sense of belonging.
We Look Forward to Welcoming Students Back to School!
School starts on Thursday, Aug. 22. We look forward to welcoming your student back to school. Below are some ways to help the first day of school go more smoothly.
Register Your New LCPS Student
Update Immunizations and Records
Ensure that your student -- especially kindergarten, 7th and 12th grade students -- has their required immunizations. These immunizations are required by Virginia Code and help keep all students healthy. Once your student is vaccinated, please provide their school with the appropriate documentation. Students need the required immunizations to attend school.
Complete Online Verification and See Your Student's Class and Bus Schedule
Complete and update the required information about your student in ParentVue. Once the information is confirmed, you will be able to view your student's class and bus schedules. Additional resources and FAQs about online verification and the start of the school year can be found on the First Day webpage.
Plan for Meals at School
Families may prepay for meals using our LINQ Connect meal payment tool. School breakfast for elementary and secondary students costs $2.30. Lunch at the elementary level costs $3.25, and at the secondary level (grades 6-12) $3.35. A la carte items are available for purchase during all meal service periods. See the LCPS School Nutrition website for more information about school meals.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families who are eligible can apply for free or reduced-price meals. See the LCPS Nutrition website to apply. If you have any questions about this program, please email freeandreduced@lcps.org.
Special Diets Requests
Special meals for students requiring gluten-free or halal diets are available for all grade levels upon request for the 2024/25 school year. LCPS offers meal substitutions and modifications for children with dietary restrictions or substitutions when presented with a signed statement by a recognized medical authority. Please contact Brittany Palaschak, RDN, with any questions regarding specific dietary requirements. See the Nutrition webpage for information about special diets or to request a special diet. If you received a special diet in the school year 2023-2024, please submit a new request.
Make a Plan for Your Student to Attend School Every Day!
We are excited to welcome your student to a new school year filled with opportunities to learn and engage. Getting into the habit of daily attendance is more important than ever. It helps to:
reduce stress,
make it easier to connect with friends and teachers, and
support learning.
Parents and guardians are urged not to take their students out of school unnecessarily and to schedule appointments and vacations during student holidays. Check the student calendars to determine when your student has school holidays. Both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 student calendars are posted online to help with your planning. We look forward to partnering with you to help ensure your student has a successful school year.
Apply Now for FREE Full-Day Preschool!
The LCPS Head Start and Starting Towards Excellence in Preschool (STEP) programs offer FREE full-day preschool opportunities for children who turn four years old by Sept. 30, 2024, and meet eligibility criteria. Both programs offer high-quality preschool instruction to prepare students for kindergarten. Classes are taught by a teacher and teacher assistant and are located throughout Loudoun County. Classes meet six hours a day, Monday through Friday, during the school year, and enrollment is open now!
Parents/guardians who are Loudoun County residents and interested in these programs can apply online by visiting the Preschool Application Page. At the time of application, parents may upload income verification, proof of residency, child’s birth certificate, and parent photo identification, which are required to help determine program eligibility. For more information about the Head Start and STEP classes, including eligibility criteria, locations, and how to apply, visit the Head Start and STEP webpage or call 571-252-2110.
LCPS.org Has a New Look!
LCPS launched a redesigned website on July 19! The new website better reflects community and program offerings, improves navigation and provides a revitalized "digital entrance" for the Division. Additional information shared in an earlier announcement explains the website transition and improved website features.
While the project team has done everything possible to make the transition seamless, in the first few weeks, users will likely have to adjust to the new site and may encounter unexpected issues. The community's flexibility and grace during this time are greatly appreciated. Should you find a spot for needed improvement, please let us know via the new website feedback form.
Back-to-School Support with Varsity Tutors
As the new school year kicks off, students may find themselves needing extra help with their studies. LCPS students have access to Varsity Tutors, a valuable and FREE resource available 24/7. Whether it's tutoring or enrichment support, Varsity Tutors is here to help with any academic need. With a variety of dynamic classes, learning becomes both engaging and enjoyable. To get started, look for the Varsity Tutors button in LCPSGo!
LCPS Launches Classroom Audio Amplification Pilot Program
To improve classroom communication, nine schools -- Ball's Bluff Elementary, Forest Grove Elementary, Leesburg Elementary, Sterling Elementary, Harmony Middle, River Bend Middle, Heritage High, Tuscarora High and William Obediah Robey High -- are participating in the Classroom Audio Amplification Pilot Program for the 2024-25 school year. The voice amplification systems were installed in all classrooms within the nine schools this summer.
The many benefits of this exciting new program include:
Enhanced Speech Intelligibility: Students will experience clearer communication, making it easier to understand lessons and instructions.
Increased Student Engagement: A more interactive and engaging classroom environment, fostering better participation and interest in learning.
Reduced Teacher Vocal Strain: Teachers will be able to communicate more effectively without straining their voices, leading to a more consistent and reliable teaching experience.
Equity in Learning: Students with hearing impairments will benefit from improved access to spoken instruction, ensuring a more inclusive learning environment.
Positive Impact on Academic Achievement: Enhanced audio systems are expected to contribute to better academic outcomes for all students.
During this pilot program, LCPS will review data and feedback on the benefits of this new technology to determine if and when the program can expand to more schools.
2025 Graduation Dates Announced
LCPS has already started to plan for Class of 2025 graduation ceremonies. Graduation ceremonies for LCPS schools and programs will take place between May 27 and June 18, 2025. Graduation ceremonies will be held at Eagle Bank Arena at George Mason University or at the school. See the complete list of graduation dates and locations.

Policy Review
LCPS policies are reviewed every five years per the Code of Virginia § 22.1-253.13:7. During this process, LCPS asks for input from several advisory committees, stakeholder groups and the community at large. To provide feedback on any policies that are currently under review, please see the Policy Review webpage to access the Policy Feedback Form. Providing input via the Feedback Form does not guarantee that the feedback will be included in the final policy. All feedback will be reviewed by the School Board Committee as they develop policies for submission to the entire School Board. The authority for final approval of any policy lies solely with the Loudoun County School Board.
