Hello Pershing Families!

I hope you are having a great summer break with your loved ones and enjoying some of this fabulous San Diego weather we have been having.

As we prepare for the start of the 2023-24 school year I want to welcome our rising 6th grade families to the Pershing Community - we are looking forward to meeting you at our 6th Grade Orientation event on Thursday, August 17 @8:30 AM. I also want to take a moment and welcome back our 7th & 8th grade families as well - I can't wait to hear about all the exciting things the students have been up to this summer and sharing all the great activities we have in-store for them this year.

The Panther Pulse Community Newsletter will be one of the main ways the school communicates information to families. The newsletter is sent out weekly on Sunday evenings and provides updates about upcoming events as well as highlights and celebrations from the previous week. The school website has also undergone significant revisions this past year and is now a great source of information for families as well: https://pershing.sandiegounified.org/home

Right now the Pershing campus is closed while the majority of our teachers and staff enjoy the last few weeks of their summer break. The first day of school for students is Monday, August 21. Our main office will reopen on Thursday, August 10.

As a public school, Pershing will provide any school supplies that are required for a student's academic program (i.e. paper, pencil, etc.). Teachers will also typically provide a suggested supply list for their specific course in the class syllabus they distribute during the first week of school.

That being said, many families prefer to purchase their own personalized supplies. Below is a list of SUGGESTED school supplies that will work for all grade levels and aligns with our AVID program:

• pens (blue & black ink preferred)
• highlighter

• colored pencils
• lined paper
• college-rule single subject spiral notebooks (one for each core subject)

Families We Need You!

Pershing Middle School is one of the few schools in the area with a school robotics program that sends teams to FIRST Lego League Robotics competitions.

Currently, we are seeking adult coaches to help facilitate the upcoming FIRST Lego League Fall Robotics season. Robotics does not run without parent participation. No robotics experience is required-- only a willingness to learn. Past coaches will be available as mentors. Sharing the responsibility among multiple parents is ideal, so the more the merrier.

As a general guideline, coaches need to be available 2x a week during afternoon hours-- meetings typically run 3-4:30pm. There are additional preparation and support hours that can be completed evenings or weekends. As mentioned earlier, no robotics experience is required-- only a willingness to learn.

We are fortunate to have a very active parent community and an engaged foundation that works tirelessly to ensure our school has the funds it needs to allow our students to have enriching academic experiences beyond the typical program.

Please consider joining and supporting the Pershing Foundation. Their first meeting is Wednesday, September 13 @6:30 PM in the library. For your convenience the meeting will also be accessible on zoom so families who cannot attend in person will be able to participate (zoom link will be shared in later newsletters).
