Final Week of School
8th Grade Clapout
We are starting a new tradition for our 8th graders and their families on the last day of school. Beginning this year, parents will be welcome to join us as we clap out our 8th graders! We will begin promptly at 11:45 AM on Friday May 24th (the last day of school). This is an early release day at 1 PM for all learners. Our 8th graders will leave the cafeteria and file through the halls past their peers and teachers as we clap them out and send them to 9th grade. The final part of their parade will be the celebration with parents. Parents wishing to participate will park at the back of the school and line up in the garden area. As we bring learners outside, they'll file through a line of parents for the final part of the celebration. That will end a little after noon. If parents wish to take learners home at this time, they're welcome to do so without signing them out.
If parents are not joining us, learners will go back inside for their normal dismissal at 1 PM.
Parents are not allowed to come inside the building at all. This would require sign in and that's not something we are setup to do for hundreds of people all at once.

Summer ipads
- Returning students will take their current devices home with them for the summer.
- Students who are not returning for the 2024-25 school year will turn in their iPad at their campus on the last day of school. If the student is withdrawn after May 27, an appointment will need to be made to drop off the device at the Service Center. Please use this form to schedule the appointment. This document, Preparing Your iPad for Turn In, outlines instructions for backing up your personal data and preparing your iPad for turn-in.
- Graduating Seniors will turn in their devices and accessories on May 22 or May 29 on their home campus.
Final Week of School

Thursday 5/23: 6th grade field day with Ninja Nation

Action Item- Learners not Returning to West next year
If your child will not be returning to Coppell ISD for the 2024-25 school year, please fill out one of the forms below based on their grade level to let us know your future plans.
This form link is only for 8th graders not returning:
https://forms.gle/yVAXsuzuNDjKRDKk8
This form link is only for 6th and 7th graders not returning:
https://forms.gle/NqYZV72exAES2Jap9
A form will need to be filled out separately for each child in your family not returning to the district. If you have other students at this campus who are not returning, please fill out the form for each learner not returning. If you have students at other campuses who will not be returning, you will receive an e-mail from those campuses with their form links.
We would ask that you complete the form by May 17, 2024 so that we can provide further guidance on returning district devices and other items.
We understand that you may have already let us know via e-mail that your child will not be returning, but we need to gather additional information about your future plans at this time.
In an effort to continually improve our schools, we appreciate feedback from families who choose to withdraw their child from Coppell ISD. We know that there are many different reasons families change schools. The decision to transfer a child/children to a new school is never an easy one. We respect the difficulty of your decision. Please remember that should you decide to bring your child back to us, we will be here ready to welcome them back!
Device Protection Plan
- This year as a district we had 53% of our students purchase the Device Protection plan.
- Most schools had well below 50% participation.
- The plan pays for the repairs for accidental damage to CISD devices and accessories. Lost devices and accessories are not covered.
- Some families saved over $400 in repair charges by having the Device Protection Plan.
- Some families had to pay more than $400 in repair costs without the plan.
- We are trying to achieve a 70% participation rate districtwide. We would love to have you advertise the plan to your families through email, PTO, a table at Open House, a representative at back-to-school activities, inclusion with supply packages, or any other opportunities there are to get the information out.
- If a school, department, PTO, or other school organization would like to pay for the Plan for a student or group of students, we would welcome those ideas as well.
- Specific information about the plan will be distributed within the next few weeks. The window for purchasing the 2024-2025 plan will open on or around July 1.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a month to celebrate and pay tribute to the contributions generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans have made to American history, society, and culture. In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established Asian/ Pacific American Heritage Week. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/ Pacific American history: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and the contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869. In 1992, Congress passed legislation that permanently designated May of each year as Asian/ Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was renamed AAPI Heritage Month in 2009. Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans have played a significant role in our city and state, leading our community in education, medicine, finance, government, and international trade.

North Texas Teen Book Festival
Good morning West families,
Immediately following our Book Fair last week, we are promoting the North Texas Teen Book Festival. This is the 10th year of the event and it promises to be the biggest one yet!
We had a learner information session Thursday, 4/4, during Wrangler Time. All learners who are interested in attending the event were asked to attend the info session if they were able. This helped us get an approximate count of interest, which impacts busing and chaperone needs.
I am seeking additional chaperones to help on this day. You would help take attendance when boarding the buses, as well as once during lunchtime check-in, and when boarding buses to return to West. Otherwise, it is not necessary to accompany your group of learners all day – they will select the panels they want to go to on their own and create their own schedules, so you are free to enjoy the festival on your own while you are there. Plus, you will get this year's NTTBF shirt:
For all interested chaperones and learners who missed the original information session, there is an additional information session after school on Tuesday, April 9th, at 4:00 PM via Zoom. This will give information about the event, the chaperone role as well as busing information and allow time for questions from families about the festival.
The Zoom link is here:
https://coppellisd.zoom.us/j/97677476744?pwd=YWo3NVVnYUdwaGptV3lROXRYLzd4QT09
After the session, if you are interested in being a chaperone, please see additional information at this link for the district process on how to become a volunteer:

Thank you for supporting our learners and in helping them celebrate reading!

Spinal Screening at West- Friday April 5th
The annual spinal screening program at Coppell Middle School West will be conducted for all 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys who are not in Athletics on April 5th.
The purpose of this program is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality, is a sideways curve of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back, and is often confused with poor posture. Most cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Early detection can prevent the development of a severe deformity affecting a person’s health and appearance.
The procedure for this screening is to have the school nurse look at the student’s shoulders and back as he/she stands in an upright position and bends forward. For optimum results, the student will be asked to remove his/her shirt. Boys and girls will be screened separately. Girls are requested to wear a halter top, bathing suit top or sports bra under their clothes for the examination.
Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This procedure does not replace your student’s need for a regular checkup. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse at # 214-496-8694 or lmorrow@coppellisd.com

Wednesday's Secure Lockout Situation & Whatsapp Groups
I wanted to share with you all that I am aware of some rumors circulating regarding the events that took place on Wednesday.
One of our coaches had a group of learners outside during PE when a man in a conflict nearby approached the area of the school. Our coach called me as she was getting learners inside the building and I decided to put the school in a lockout- which means that we don't allow anyone to leave or enter the building. I stayed on the scene until the man was removed by police for actions unrelated to our school or students.
Our learners were never in danger and there were no weapons. I know some learners have told their parents that they saw a man with a weapon. That is simply untrue.
I'd also like to remind everyone that communication that is conveyed through whatsapp groups is often inaccurate. I'd encourage you to always wait for communication from me through our official district communication methods.

New ipads for learners- March 22nd
I want to share that the iPad exchange for new iPads for West students will occur on March 22nd. Your child will need to bring in his or her current iPad, charger and any accessories, including their case/keyboard and Apple Pencil (if applicable) for this exchange.
Backup Instructions:
To ensure a smooth transition and preserve any data not saved on the cloud, we kindly ask all families to back up their current iPads. Click on the link below to back up the iPad.
New iPad Features:
The new iPads will come with chargers and an Apple Compatible Metapen or Epen with students in grade 6 and above taking this accessory home. Additionally, each student's iPad will be equipped with a keyboard case, enhancing functionality and versatility.
Parent Support Resources:
This link — www.bulbapp.com/u/family-resources~3 — includes information on the district’s iPad filtering system and how to set up a screen guide for parental controls of the iPad when at home.
As a reminder, all CISD iPads are filtered by the district’s filtering system, Lightspeed, whether they are used at a CISD school or facility, at home or at another location.
ScreenGuide is an app from Mosyle, CISD's device management provider, that allows parents and guardians to manage school-issued iPads. Through this app, you can do things like configure screen time limits, remotely lock the iPad, lock the iPad into an app and hide certain apps. To learn more, visit www.bulbapp.com/u/screenguide-parental-controls.
The Device Protection Plan, which families had the opportunity to purchase in the fall, will apply to these new iPads. For those who haven’t purchased the Device Protection Plan, you can still participate for a pro-rated cost of $15 per device, if purchased between Feb. 26 and March 29. Visit www.coppellisd.com/deviceplan for more information.
These new iPads are part of the voter-approved CISD Bond and come with enhanced performance and features, promising to elevate the learning and working experience for CISD students and staff. In today's digital age, iPads have become an essential teaching tool, integral to the CISD learning experience and crucial for state standardized testing, which is now conducted online and begins in third grade.

Registration Information from West Counselors- Current 8th grade Parents
Below is the slideshow we used in both of our talks with learners this week about choosing classes for high school. Please remember they need to have their 9th grade courses entered correctly (the total should be 8 credits) but you also need to have entered courses for 10th, 11th and 12th grades as well. The courses for 10-12 are NOT set in stone, this is just a draft, but you do need to have it done.
As a reminder, Tuesday, January 30th is Shadow Day. Learners do not need to bring anything with them that day, except a lunch which they will leave in the cafeteria before getting on the bus.
That night there will be a showcase at CHS 9 for learners and parents, it is optional but will be very informative!

STAAR Testing Dates
Below is an all-in-one place to show STAAR Testing Dates. Learners don't need to study for any of their STAAR tests, but should get plenty of rest and eat breakfast.
Upcoming STAAR Field Test for 7th and 8th graders
Coppell Middle School West has been designated by the Texas Education Agency to participate in the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR® ) Stand-Alone Field Test to be administered on February 8, 2024. As required by Texas Education Code, Section 39.035, administering the February 2024 STAAR Stand-Alone Field Test is mandatory for those campuses that are selected. CMS West, along with thousands of schools across Texas, are required to participate in the stand-alone field test. Coppell Middle School West was selected by TEA to administer the STAAR Stand-Alone Field Test in the following subject area and grade level:
7th and 8th grade ONLY
Reading Language Arts (RLA)
The Field Test will be administered online only. All students who are scheduled to take the corresponding STAAR assessment in spring 2024 will participate in the stand-alone field test. This includes emergent bilingual students and students who receive special education services, unless a student requires an accommodation that is not available for the online field test.
General STAAR Field Test Information
As required by House Bill 3906, 86th Texas Legislature, 2019, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) underwent a redesign to better align the assessments with classroom instruction. The redesign was implemented in the 2022–2023 school year and included the addition of writing to reading assessments and more non-multiple-choice questions such as open-ended or constructed-response questions.
Although the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has made a concerted effort to minimize the amount of instructional time used for state testing purposes generally and particularly for stand-alone field testing, a stand-alone field test is necessary to develop future state assessments with writing components.
According to TEA, field-test data from a sample of students who are representative of the state are critical to the state’s ability to build high-quality assessments. Coppell ISD will not receive any field-test data or any performance information from this administration for students, campuses, districts, or the state. However, as a routine part of the test development process for the Texas Assessment Program, field-test questions and data will be reviewed by TEA to determine whether the questions are appropriate for inclusion in the test bank for future STAAR administrations.
Students taking the stand-alone field test should be provided with opportunities to use the online practice tests. The test directions assume that students are familiar with the online testing environment. The practice tests, available on the Practice Test Site, give students experience using the online interface and tools and allow them to become familiar with various assessment question formats. For more information regarding the STAAR redesign, refer to the STAAR Resources page on the TEA website.
If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Anne Tucker (Testing Coordinator) at mtucker@coppellisd.com

Veterans Day
Saturday is Veterans Day. On Veterans Day, America highlights the service of all members of the United States Armed Forces, both past and present. The military who serves and protects the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and are an important part of their communities. Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude, and remembrance, as we express our deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who have served in our nation's armed forces.
Veterans Day is a remembrance of all U.S. military veterans – past and present. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became legally known as Veterans Day.

West Spelling Bee
Dear Parents,
This year, we will use the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s online testing platform to hold our grade-level spelling bee via an online spelling and word meaning test.
The first step to spelling bee participation for your child is registering for the online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com. I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ThKRsffiFc
If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household. Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child. The test will be taking place at school. Your child must be present on Thursday, November 16 to take their test. If your child advances to the school-level competition, you will be notified by email Friday, November 17.
This year, our school-level competition will be administered in person on December 6, 2023. Remember, the first step to spelling bee participation is to register at online-test.spellingbee.com.
Please register your child by Monday, November 13. Once registered, please expect a confirmation email with additional information from me (Ms.Tangassi). Students who are not registered by the deadline will not be able to participate. Please contact me with any questions about our school spelling bee program.
I look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Tangassi

New Styluses for all Learners Next Week
Next week we will be distributing new styluses to all 6th-8th graders during their Math class. These styluses will be replacing the Apple Pencils that have historically been used by Coppell ISD students. The district is making a transition to the styluses for several reasons. The cost to replace this stylus device is much more economical and yet the functionality is similar to the Apple Pencil.
We kindly request that all 7th and 8th graders bring their current Apple Pencils to school next week. We will be collecting these during Math classes and providing each student with their new styluses , which will become their personal property. It's important that each stylus is properly labeled with your child's name or a unique identifying mark to prevent any confusion on whose pen is whose.
In the event that a stylus is lost or misplaced, students have the option to purchase a replacement from Amazon using this link. We understand that accidents can happen, and this link will make it convenient for you to acquire a new stylus if needed.
Spaces for Prayer
If your child needs or wants to pray during the day, there is an inter-faith prayer space near the counselor's office. Learners are welcome to go by the counselors office anytime and they'll be shown to the space.
Youth and Government
Please join us on Wednesday August 30th from 5:30-6:30 PM in the West Large Group Instruction space (across the hall from the gym) if you'd like to learn more about Youth and Government.
Reminder about Late Work Policy beginning Sept. 5th
Beginning this school year (Sept. 5th, 2023), Coppell ISD will be implementing a late work policy for all middle school learners. We will allow the first part of the school year for them to get used to this change, but beginning on Tuesday Sept. 5th, 2023, learners will be penalized for late work. Please see below for details about our policy. Learners who receive accommodations that allow for extra time will still be allowed those.

Welcome Back to the 2023-2024 School Year
We are hopeful everyone has had a wonderful summer break! We are looking forward to welcoming learners on Tuesday August 15th. Please be sure to read everything in this newsletter so you will have all the information needed as your learners head back to school!
Back to School Tasks
I have sent this checklist a few times over the summer so if you've already completed these tasks, please disregard. All required tasks must be done before your learner can start school.
Viewing Learner Schedules beginning August 10th
Schedules will be available to view in Home Access Center, beginning on Thursday August 10th. Any changes that need to be made after that will also be updated in Home Access Center. We don't hand out paper schedules, so Home Access Center will be the method for retrieving all learner schedules. If you have questions about your schedule, counselors will be available at Wrangler Welcome on August 10th to support you and answer questions. Please be sure you can login to Home Access Center prior to August 10th.
Bell Schedule
Learner ipads- Device Protection
All of our learners will have an ipad as it is vital to the learning process in our district. We strongly recommend that all families enroll in the CISD Device Protection Plan. This plan costs $35 and protects against accidental damage, theft (with a police report), and product failure. It will not cover negligence, willful damage or a lost device. Any families who choose not to enroll in the protection plan would be responsible for any costs related to repair or replacement of the ipad or its accessories.
Preparing ipads to start school
ipad Maintenance
As we prepare to start a new school year, please help your learner prepare by making sure their ipad is in good working order. Please charge the device completely, delete anything taking up storage, and do any necessary updates.
If you notice any damage or issues with your learner's ipad, please submit a help desk ticket using the button below.
ipad Swaps
We have a group of incoming 6th graders with an older model of ipad that needs to be swapped out. If your learner is in this group, you will have received several emails about the swap time that was offered earlier this week. If you got the email and couldn't attend the opportunity to swap out on Monday, we will be available at the Wrangler Welcome event on August 10th (4-7 PM) to swap out their device.
Other older ipads will be replaced as the year goes on so stay tuned for that information.
Reminders and Expectations for Parents and Learners (2023-2024 School Year)
Dropoff and Pickup
AM Dropoff:
All learners may be dropped off beginning at 7:30 AM each day. If you bring your learner to school prior to 7:30 please keep them inside your vehicle. There will not be staff on hand to supervise them and they won't be protected from inclement weather until 7:30 AM each day. If your learner rides a bus, we will accommodate bus arrival times as needed.
PM Pickup:
All learners MUST be picked up no later than 4 PM. Exceptions will only be made for students participating in required extracurricular activities such as practices, rehearsals, private lessons, competitions, or club meetings that are supervised by staff. All students not participating in a staff-supervised activity must depart school grounds by 4:00pm each school day.
After 4:00pm, staff are not available to supervise students inside or outside of the school who are not participating in an organized school activity. This is a student safety concern.
Please remember that many students are eligible for free CISD bus transportation to and from school each day. For more information and to register for bus service, please visit the district’s transportation webpage; https://www.coppellisd.com/page/transportation.
Students who are not eligible for bus service can be picked up by a parent between 3:35pm and 4:00pm or may walk or ride a bike home.
Car Pickup/Dropoff Loop
When dropping learners off at school in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Learners may ONLY be dropped off and picked up at the front of our school near Ranch Trail. They may not under any circumstances be dropped off/picked up in the parking lots, at the side of the building, or at the back of the school. Our buses arrive at the back of the school and learners picked up/dropped there slow down our buses and are not able to cross traffic safely. All cars MUST go through the front car loop. No exceptions.
- Parents may not park and walk up to the school to pickup learners. Learners must watch for their cars as they come through the pickup line.
- Please pull all the way forward according to the directions of staff members on duty. Pulling up as far as possible in the line allows learners to be dropped off and picked up quickly and everyone to be on their way as soon as possible. We know every parents time is valuable and adhering to this expectation makes things run more smoothly for everyone.
- All adults should stay in their cars.If learners need assistance, we have staff on hand to help them.
Late Work Policy
Beginning this school year (Sept. 5th, 2023), Coppell ISD will be implementing a late work policy for all middle school learners. We will allow the first part of the school year for them to get used to this change, but beginning on Tuesday Sept. 5th, 2023, learners will be penalized for late work. Please see below for details about our policy. Learners who receive accommodations that allow for extra time will still be allowed those.
MIddle School:
Points off for each school day an assignment is late.
1 school day late- 10 points off
2 school days late- 20 points off
3 school days late- 30 points off
*If more than 3 days late learners can continue to turn it in up until the next progress report/3 week mark, at which time it becomes a zero.
