How to Excuse an Absence
As a parent or guardian, you have several options to excuse your student's attendance:
Call 503-916-5180 Option 2 (please leave a message if it goes to voicemail); The office checks voicemail until 4:00pm daily
Email JeffersonAttend@pps.net
Send a note with your student with signature and contact information.
An absence may be excused if the absence is caused by:
* Sickness/ ILL
*An emergency
* Pre Arranged Appointment
*If your student has a medical appointment, have reception print them out an attendance note

We are having a high volume of parents excusing absences, and want to make sure you know that these cannot continue to be excused, if they don't fit the above criteria

Attendance Coach
Attendance Blitz Time
Students have been attending classes better and keeping the halls vacant. We want to celebrate that! On Halloween (10/31/24 Thurs) we will be rewarding the first to arrive with a special something. Encourage your students to be in their classroom when the bell rings. Let’s keep those halls clean and reinforce being “seated at the bell.”
Below are the attendance percentages for our entire student body, based on data pulled on 10/25/24:
- Green: Students with 90% to 100% attendance
- Yellow: Students with 80% to 89.9% attendance
- Red: Students with attendance below 79.9%
The JHS Attendance Support Intervention Ladder, or "Attendance Ladder" for short, is our school's approach to addressing unexcused attendance codes such as LAT (Late after Tardy) and SKP (Skipping). When students have unexcused absences without a valid and documented excuse, they will meet with the Student Attendance Coach and be placed on the ladder. For any questions, please contact La’Mar Winston Jr., the Student Attendance Coach.
Culture/Climate
The Student of the Month committee received several wonderful recommendations from the staff and administration at Jefferson. During the homecoming assembly four students were awarded the October Student of the month certificate for their class. For the Senior class: Chance Coleman, for the Junior Class: Scout Bonnette, for the Sophomore class: Giovanna De Jesus Martinez and for the Freshmen class Geordyn Gordan. Congratulations to all the recipients that are examples of the following D.E.M.O.S. traits: Dedication, Engagement, Open-mindedness and Skill.
As Halloween approaches please encourage your student to follow the school rules . Students can not cover their faces, wear hoods, have any fake weapons, use profanity or offensive language. Please keep in mind the rules in the Student Handbook. 2024-2025 PPS Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Discipline Handbook English (1).pdf
Good Neighbors. Please encourage your student to be a good neighbor and help keep the grounds on and around Jefferson clean. We are stronger together and must all be a part of the solution. Let’s all pitch in to keep the neighborhood clean.

So You Wanna Be A College Athlete?
Everything You Need to Get Ready to be a NCAA or NAIA Athlete Post-High School
What is NCAA?
NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletics Association and they are the governing body for all Division 1, 2 and 3 athletics in the United States. Many colleges and universities in the U.S. are categorized within the NCAA. The main differences between the divisions is size of the student body, level of competitiveness, and budget. D1 schools typically have larger budgets, larger student bodies and more competitive programs whereas D2 and 3 schools tend to have smaller athletic programs and focus on academic excellence as well as competition. It’s all about finding the RIGHT FIT!!
What is NAIA?
NAIA stands for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and it functions similarly to the NCAA, but is a much smaller association. Schools in the NAIA are also 4 year colleges and universities that offer athletic programming, but typically at a much smaller level than NCAA schools. There are fewer schools and championships for instance in the NAIA than the NCAA, and they are also focused on academics as well as athletics.
How do I know what division my schools are in?
The NCAA and the NAIA both have a search function to find schools in their divisions and conferences. Most college and university websites will also list their division and conference on their athletics page!
What do I need to do in order to be eligible?
First, fill out the Interest Form! Then, for NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 schools, you will need to create a profile through the NCAA Clearing House and complete their eligibility requirements. You also need to create a profile for Division 3 or if you are undecided, but the qualifications are a bit different!
Click HERE for the full NCAA College Bound Student Athlete Guide
For NAIA you also have to register to meet eligibility requirements, but they’re a little different from the NCAA requirements. Use the NAIA Eligibility Center to create a profile!
Click HERE for the full NAIA College Bound Student Athlete Guide!
If I have more questions or need help, who can I go to?
We have so many staff members here to support you as you make the transition from high school to collegiate athletics. Make sure to talk to your coach about your interest in college athletics and reach out to any of the staff members below for more information!
Donnie Siel - Athletic Director
Student Services Office; dsiel@pps.net
Brittany Warren - College Coordinator
Maritza Mendez & Rebecca Norman - School Counselors
