GT PAC Featured Resource of the Month 📘📙📗
Fort Bend County Libraries, Harris County Public Library, and Houston Public Library are wealth of resources for more than just books! Stay connected to these libraries for movies, events, trivia challenges, and more. Houston Public Library also offers a "Library of Things," designed to loan out bakeware, game boxes, and discovery kits!
Icons of the Month - Patterns and Trends 📘📙📗
The "Patterns" icon prompts students to look for repeating elements within a topic (ideas, events, thoughts, actions, etc.). This icon also challenges students to look for a breaks in a pattern and consider the reason(s) for the break.
Sentence Starters for Patterns:
Using this pattern, what can you predict about _______?
Why do you think the main character in the story changed his routine? What effect did that have on the other characters?
The "Trends" icon prompts students to consider how a topic is currently changing and what factors may be contributing to that change.
Sentence Starters for Trends:
What social, political, technological, and popular ideas affected the knowledge about ______?
What ongoing factors have influenced ________?
Talking With Your Child About Uncomfortable Emotions 📘📙📗
An article on KQED, and shared by Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT), explains the benefits of talking with kids who experience "emodiversity" - a range and abundance of both negative and positive emotions. "When parents accept their children's feelings and view emotional displays as opportunities to empathize, connect, and strategize, kids tend to have fewer emotional and behavioral problems, including issues with anger, anxiety, and acting out"
TPSP in FBISD 📘📙📗
During October, GT students met with their teachers to discuss their research plans and student projects are now in progress for the coming months. It's important to emphasize that TPSP is a research project for students in grades 1-8 that is meant to be carried out at school. Therefore, the majority of the work is expected to be completed in a school setting rather than at home. For students in grades 9-12, TPSP is optional, and GT teachers will provide support for these projects outside of regular school hours.
We eagerly anticipate the presentation of student projects at campus showcases in the spring. To find specific showcase dates for each campus, please check the respective campus web pages in early spring.
Innovation Hour 📘📙
Campuses across the district are engaging in innovative thinking and improving their problem solving through Innovation Hour. Students have been introduced to the 6Ps of Innovation Hour and pitched their ideas for their project. During November, students will be working on their projects. For more information on Innovation Hour, visit the GT department website and/or contact your campus COGS.
Sullivan Elementary
Settlers Way Elementary
4th grade students at Settlers Way are learning about how to plan their Innovation Hour project.
GT Learning Plan 📘📙📗
This month, students will engage in the GT Learning Plan (GTLP) progress check by evaluating the steps needed to meet their academic and social/emotional (affective) goals. Progress checks will take place November 1 through November 14. Parents will be provided a collaboration opportunity through a method determined by the campus: parent/teacher conferences, phone, email, or hard document. The GT Learning Plan 1st Progress Check report will be posted in Skyward November 14-November 17.
